| Review Detail |
Purchased in its 159 flavour, I bought this to complement my Palmer Honeycomb 06/07.
The Palmer is great (see my review) but best suited (under my feet at least) to fast piste or powder. I bought the Ride specifcally because it's twin-tip - or twin-ish as Ride describe it. Shorter and more flexible. I was looking for these features so I could:-
a) Have an easier time learning to ride switch b) Be more confident about riding the park
One day on a rental model convinced me I'd found what I was looking for and I bought one the next day. Where I'd struggled on the Palmer to get through "chop" on the pistes, the Ride flexed and forgave.
Ride's "slimewalls" and the vibration reducing core also made a noticable difference and it was generally very smooth. Like the suspension on a good French car, rides the bumps nicely but doesn't wallow around like an American car would.
There are long tram-lines of mounting holes, in a slightly set-back configuration (hence twin-ish) on the Ride so you can set bindings wherever you want. When set-up as a twin, it fulfilled what I'd hoped for in encouraging switch learning. I've still got a long way to go but combined with the good edges (metal all the way round tip and tail) and the flex, I'll be happy to learn.
In the park, the flex and smoothness gave me the confidence to progress without the fear of "stiff-stick" landings off jumps. The slightly shorter length making getting round the park and setting up for jumps that bit easier.
As an all-areas board it doesn't match freeride specials like the Palmer for ultimate speed but if you're feeling a bit fatigued, it also doesn't require Formula 1-driver levels of concentration to get down the mountain - and still does a good job of it.
Great value for money too - even dis-regarding the dollar exchange benefit and end-of-season discount. I guess the Custom X is the reference for other all-mountain boards. Unfortunately I can't offer a comparison but it will have to go some to justify the extra coin.
Overall, I can't fault it. For my money, it matches Ride's description exactly and in most conditions it will flatter your riding and you'll have a good day. |
