At least at this resort the road up to the "ski field" is tarred! Not the biggest area you'll ever board, but also not very crowded, at least during the week. I imagine after a dump at the weekend it must be like a zoo! We arrived on a Monday left on the Thursday, which was long enough. The only starts at the bottom of the ski field so the whole way up you drive through green & brown not the white you'd expect! The mountain does get hit by wind and so be aware and the conditions were "spring like" for us. Ice in the monring slush in the arvo. Still a nice little field, lifties very friendly. No lift queues. If you're in Auckland in winter defo worth the trip. Just make sure your edges are sharp..
Strengths
Close to Auckland (that might be bad..) We didn't get around to the other side of the mountain, so you have two resorts quite close. Awesome views, and the volcano looks cool from far on a clear day.
Weaknesses
Ice and slush

Besides the wierd way they pronouce this mountain its pretty kool place......Not one tree in sight so the mountain is all yours to play with.....there are plenty of beginner runs to Pro off-piste runs....just keep an eye out on the horrizon and check you routes before you shred the gnarr because big drop there are.....and they come up fast! Don't expect to land on any pow-pow either as most of the time its very cruddy (a layer of hard icy snow on top of powder). The Park is kool, they have kickers from 20ft to 60ft and a good selection of rails and things to jib.....they wait till the end of the season to build the half-pipe since ther is a natural one there...but the kiwi boyz like to make it just that little bit bigger...and faster!!... You do have to be on the ball if you go off piste and never travel alone as Whakapapa is know for avalanches... the biggest one caught on cam was filmed there!! There is alot of ice about and the weather can keep you off the Mountain for dayz on end but when you get up there its a great feeling shredding and being able to see the whole of NZ! The people are great and night life even better.....Its worth a crack but be sure to pad up as there's alot of ice....
Strengths

Always finding new things to shredd, hit or jib

The park changes almost every day

the Locals and friendly People

Postcard backgrounds

Total freedom
Hot Spots
Yahoo's Cave!?!?!

Weaknesses
Ice, Crud, slush

Rainy and stormy

Can get confussed on what time of the yr it is
