Bowles Outdoor Centre, East Sussex

Description
Bowles is an attractive slope situated in the countryside five miles south of Tunbridge Wells. It has a reputation for quality instruction - the instructors are well qualified, enthusiastic and patient! There are two slopes, each with a variable speed ski tow. The main slope has low friction matting and water lubrication for consistent sliding whatever the weather. All equipment is provided. Users need only bring old clothes, together with a pair of thick socks and a pair of gloves. We continue whatever the weather, so waterproofs may be necessary. Experienced users are welcome to use their own boots, skis or boards. Skiers and boarders with disabilities are welcome to use the slope during practice times; adapted equipment is available. If someone with a disability wishes to learn to ski or board and is prevented by the nature of their disability from joining group courses, we will be pleased to offer private tuition at the same price as a course.

Sorry to put a damper on it guys but this place is no comparison to a golf course when it's snowed...it's crap. I don't snowboard here anymore, only ski basically because it's too damn dangerous. I have done some stupid things on a board in my time and i don't fear falling but at bowles it's really bad for falling. The board gets caught in the dentex when you land a jump and you just flying downwards for about 15ft and evetually reach the bottom and relaise you've got shooting pains in your wrist, it turns out to be broken. But the jump was fine and the landing was fine too, so what happened you ask yourself? that place is possesed!! Be carefull when boarding here it's a cesspit of pain.
Strengths
erm...it's local and fairly cheap
Weaknesses
it hurts.

When we got there on their advanced board night they have no ramps/rails at all so we ended up jibbing a ladder round the back on their snowflex style nursery slope and got a b*llocking off the manager so started pulling some tricks off the rollers.
Strengths
All the locals on board nights are really friendly
Weaknesses
No ramps/rails

This is the slope that I learned to snowboard on in January 2001. I've taken a lot of big tumbles on here but luckily nothing ever broke, however, my mate that I learned to board with did break his finger on here during a lesson. Learning to turn was the main problem with Bowles. It's a very narrow slope and fairly steep for beginners too, so you had to try and get turns in quickly without building up too much speed, which when you are starting out seems like mission impossible! The hourly rate does include the use of their equipment if you don't have your own.
The requirements for being able to attend the practice sessons at Bowles are that you can successfully get from top to bottom of slope doing Falling Leaf.
Strengths
Good hourly rates, but then you'd expect that with a small, dendex outfit.
Weaknesses
Dendex surface (very painful if you take a big fall!).
Very narrow slope, not ideal for learning on.
Fairly short slope, seem to spend all your time on the button lift going back up.
Can get quite crowded when around 8 or more people on it, due to it being so small.
Long walk uphill to slope from Main Car Park!
