Booked last minute and stayed at the Hotel Tyrol just near the centre of Kitzbuhel it's a fairly budget hotel run entirely by Neilson, so is very Brit-centric. We got HB accom for that price, but this was very late season (Neilson actually added the week due to good snow). Food was good, but not outstanding, apart from the eggs in the morning, which tasted like Cameron Diaz had laid them herself! Friendly staff and a tab bar which was both useful and dangerous!
The nightlife outside was also restricted due to the lateness of the season. Most of the 'famed' bars were closed, so most drinking was restricted to the hotel. Although when decent bottles of wine are available for 3 euros in the supermarket, who cares right? The one time we did venture out to Highways, I almost got set upon by the locals for no apparent reason, which was nice.
The town itself is the most beautiful I have been to too, although it definitely has an air of "Oi am considerably richer than yaou!" about it!
The runs were also limited with on one day available on the valley spanning cable car which takes you across to Pass Thurn. Considering the low level and late season, the snow was amazing with powder most days. The runs we had felt like enough as well, although it would have been nice to try the others, especially the Horn which is designated a snowboard area.
The main problem is the amount of flats on the runs. 80% of the time you will have to skitch/walk after getting off the lift and it gets tiresome. Definitely a skier friendly resort. Even the seasonnaires said that the runs and the town itself was limited.
All in all, a great holiday, but Kitzbuhel certainly wouldn't be on my list in a hurry again. |

We actually stayed in Kirchberg just round the corner from Kitzbuhel, but accessing the same ski area. Normally seen as the cheap alternative to Kitzbuhel, staying in Kirchberg just means you avoid most of the stuck up skiers who have more money than sense.
We stayed in the hostel style Club Habitat which I would highly recommend. You may end up sharing a room if you book late or are a small group (rooms sleep up to six I think) but the atmosphere is so friendly you really wouldn't have anything to worry about. There's always something going on, either in there or in the town (there's a popular bar downstairs)
The powder while we were there was absolutely fantastic, although there are one or two too many flats for my liking. You also need to catch a bus every morning which became rather tiresome. We did however get free guiding for the week! Bonus! |
