Having spent a season working the lifts in Thredbo i reckon i have a good all round knowledge of the place.
Given this reosrt is in australia it offers alot. Remember that snowdepth in Oz hits about 3m max in a good year so early season/late season you have to expect the cover to be thin. Having said this mid july through to august in all but the worst years should see the entire mountin open and after a fresh dump there ae some great runs. When its geting tracked out head off for the trees where thers stilll gonna be some fresh lines. Best places to be after a dump are up top out the back of karels T Bar or in the Golf Course bowl....not alot of holiday makers make it out to these but dont dis this place until u do. Some great drops in the golf course bowl, be careful not to head to far down the mountain before joining the main traisl again otherwise u'll be in the gravel and mud!
The board parks are varied and spread over the mountain so there's always somthing interesting to hit...the park crew work prety hard adjusting the parks and moving obstacles to suit conditions regularly, in fact the spring park was still going stong long after the rest of the mountain had gone green when i was there. If you enjoy boarder cross there is a track groomed mid mountain between antons and sponnars T's...I remember ski patrol manning it all day long the first few days it was open cause it was so knarly hehe!
To pick up on the previous reviews about signs....new signs were installed just before the 2005 seaon and only a complete idiot could get lost there now, eveything is sign posted from trails & lifts to ski patrol and mountain bars.
Speaking of bars the bst place for an on mountain feast is Black Sallee's on the supertrail just next to top of snowgums chair...after a feast here head down bushranger through the trees beneath snowgums lift line...theres a couple of opportunities to cap the cat tracks that cross the run. Avalanche cafe at the bottom of Kozziusko chair is also good for a bite and do a great brekkie burger (Hangover cure at its best!!). If you fancy something at more mediteranian try the Merritts resturant...bit pricey though.
True that the lift lines can grow a bit especially on the upper T Bars but max wait should be no more than 20mins on most though and its only at peak times when the inter schools races are on etc. Just make sure not to bitch at the lfitie!!! We run the T bar lines flat out and pull every T that goes by, the only hold up punters who cant get themselves ready to take the T on time!!
If your in the region its well worth checking this place out and i would have to say if your anthing other than beginner then head to Threbo over its huge rival Perisher, Thredbo is the closest to a european alpine resort youll find in Oz but with something totally uniquie...where else can you cut a wicked fresh track down throw snow gums with their un mistable colured paper bark. |
|

Unique tree runs Black Sallee's (Thanks for the lifities discount!!) Parks
And of course a great lift crew! |
|

Thredbo is a pretty little resort, there's quite a lot of runs and you could compare it to some of the smaller stateside single mountain resorts. The lift system is pretty good too. It has some cruizy tree-lined runs, some wider intermediate piste areas as well as a tree-less high elevation area which would be great on any kind of powder day.
On the previous reviews points: I found the signposting okay, there was plenty so maybe they've been updated since. The queues were never too bad (aside from the Basin base T-bar), though I visited on the 8th July - early season.
I enjoyed my day at Thredbo, though it would have been much better without the Tam style ice patches that catch you out way too often. From speaking to some regulars, these hazards seem to be commonplace and regular. I doubt I would return to Thredbo any time soon though I'm still glad I went once.
I've given it 2 out of 5 not because it was "poor" but because it simply doesn't come close to resorts I've rated at 4 or above...
You can see some more on Thredbo at my blog: http://starsofcctv.blogspot.com/2006/07/hit-me-baby-one-more-time.html |

| Strengths |
Great Scenery - stark contrast to other resorts in the world, Board Parks with plenty of variation for different abilitys Pretty good verticle, so some decent length runs
|
|
| Hot Spots |
Bistro on the other side of the river, Some cool runs through the trees off of the Gunbarrel lift If there's a dump, head to the Basin - just watch the T-bar queues High Noon is pretty good - with some decent angles to get some speed up |
|
| Weaknesses |
Stay away from the village areas if you're not doing lessons - very crowded Too many icy, muddy, gravelly patches for my liking - make sure to use a hire board! |

This resort is tiny compared to many of the European resorts l have been to. although they boost a lack of T bars compared to many other Aussie resorts l would say there is a rough 50/50 split T's to chairs.
The weather is like a freak of nature though and can suddenly bucket down with snow to rival Europe.
There were really good parks there though with 3 avalible whilst l was there for both beginners, experts and intermediates.
The lift queues were the biggest l have ever seen anywhere! There is also a lack of curtosy for other peoples equiptment as everyone there hires, so if you have your own gear watch out for people stepping on it in the lift lines.
The runs are very simple and the ratings of Green, Blue and black in no way reflect the difficultly of the run and more so reflect what the resort thinks the public would like to see! There would blacks l would rate as greens and greens that were easily reds for a european rating. The only other problem l found with the runs was that they are not marked in anyway as there are in Europe with coloured posts along the sides with the run number and name every now and then. Here you just have to hope for the best that you are in the right place and up high that can sometimes be easier said than do. |
