Review Detail
Cerro Bayo set in the chic valley around Villa La Angostura in Argentina. It's a few miles from the Chilean border and about 90 minutes drive from Bariloche. A good place to visit if you're driving/bussing over from Osorno in Chile to Bariloche in Argentina, or vice versa.

Cerro Bayo looks like a great little resort. The runs are plentiful and the scenery is outstanding. But, and it's a big but, the resort never seems to be fully open. When I pitched up to buy my lift ticket I was told that not all the resort was open, that in fact turned out to be most of the resort, there were only 2 lifts operating! I'd heard this before from some folks that had come down last year so I thought I'd try and find out why. I asked several different people associated with the resort and they all answered with the same vague "err..it's for political reasons.." response. Digging a little deeper someone told me that one of the lifts collapsed the year before and they weren't allowed to open more than two. Anyway, who knows?

So is it still worth the hassle for two lifts? The answer is probably yes. The two lifts do give you access to a large area of piste and they also open up an expanse of unskied territory behind the resort, which is normally served by a lift, but wasn't when i was there.

The main runs are a mixture of blues and reds, with some more challenging terrain available if you're prepared to do a bit of hiking. the resort is quite low providing lots of pretty decent tree runs, however the bottom of the runs were a little slushy. In terms of the scenery it's probably one of the prettiest resorts I've visited with great views across the 7 lakes region of Argentina.

I wouldn't spend more than a day or two here as there really isn't enough to keep you entertained, however it is a good stopover and because of the "political" problems you'll find you'll have most of the pistes to yourself.
