QUOTE (doob master - 14/10/2008 @ 16:09:24) I thought it was better to get a board slightly above your current standard or else you just end up buying another one once you can snowboard at an intermediate level (which doesnt take that long)? Really you just have to ride the board before you buy it; that never fails. If it's a wet noodle beginner board then you'll notice as soon as you push it; or if you don't then it's all good. Most boards are aimed at novices because most riders are learning. But you have to get the right size board too: a novice board for a fat person would not work well for someone fit, for example. |

I bought 2 boards too soon i think. 157 K2 Darkstar,158 K2 Zeppelin.
I recently got a swap from K2 for the Darkstar thats base was convex. They swapped it for their new Turbo Dream Rocker. I havnt had a chance to ride it yet.
Tell me guys?is it gonna give me a hard time |

Most beginner boards have some degree of bevel to the edge to reduce the edge catching. Burton Learn to Ride boards have a 3 degree bevel. Quite a few freestyle boards have similar bevels to stop hang-ups on rails.
The Bataleon boards have triple base technology which reduces edge catching, but most of their boards are aimed at intermediate to advanced riders. |

QUOTE (blackfly - 10/10/2008 @ 14:29:48) Hi Is it true that some boards are harder to catch an edge than others, if so can anyone name a few,im looking to buy my first board.any recomedations. an atomic hatchet
this board seems to have a lot of good points and no bad ones Make sure you get a beginner board as it will help you progress a lot faster.
Dont make the mistake i did I bought boards too advanced for my level and couldnt ride them, |

im no expert so dont rely on this but
i ride an atomic hatchet it has more of a bevelled edge , i believe for help riding rails and stuff dont really do much freestyle but definatly feels a bit mor forgiving than the board i rented for my first week on snow specialy when trying to keep yr speed up on those flatter sections also helps with flatland tricks not that im that great at them ether
downside is i supose it wont grip as much on hard pack but i dont have a problem with it seems like a really nice board to me and they go at a good price if bought at right time |

Yes it's true. Beginner boards are generally softer, so don't "dig in" as easily... often have 2 or 3 degrees of bevel (the steel edge is angled slightly up from the base)... and are de-tuned (the sharp steel edge is bluntened). There are also some brands of board (Bataleon, Lib-Tech, and "rocker" boards) which have a reverse camber (i.e. the board base is angled up from the snow rather than down, so edges are MUCH harder to catch). I'd recommend a beginner board if you're having trouble catching your edges, then move to an intermediate board when you're ready. I haven't tried reverse camber boards, but most who have rave about them. The only obvious downside is that if you learn on a rocker you might not develop the same control as you would on a regular board. But if you always ride rockers you might not care... I'm gonna get one this year and see for myself. |

What he said.
Aside from specialist rail boards, if you have that sort of problem then I'd just rent beginner gear. If you learn how to board you'll not want to ride that stuff; if you don't then you've saved a lot of cash. It does not take long to progress beyond that point. |

| As a beginner you will catch edges regardless of board, just get a helmet and don't worry |

think he;s askin about brands.
Bataleon boards have a different shape of base than other boards. check out their website which should explain it. the edges in the contact point area are raised which they say is difficult to catch. I havent ridden one before so maybe others can recommend it. |
