I only ride double-black diamonds and I hike to get to them.. when I've finished riding 'em at the end of the day I snow-shoe off the mountain to base.. then I hit the sauna and get a good thrashing from a fat masseuse with a birch branch..

It's all about the piste condition - not the colour.

Pistes are all graded relative only to other runs on that particular mountain.

Give 'em a go or you'll never know...
---- Hey I run a chalet in the gorgeous, undiscovered Tatra mountains of Slovakia. It's bloomin' cheap too. For all year budget mountain getaways minus the hefty price tag, have a closer look at www.chaletslovakia.com ----

I ride whatever is put in front of me, although I'd rather have a nice blue run that I can carve hard and fast rather than a mogulled black run where you have to put in quick turns.

It's not what you ride though, it's HOW you ride it.

at the Maeskogel kaprun (Top and to the right)seems to be developing a proper black, in progress thought it was a new gondola but local said its a new run, if so it would earn the right to be called a black

Most of the gnarly double blacks you see marked on North American maps wouldn't be marked in Europe. They like to name every tiny little variation on a run so they can say how many runs they've got, European resorts couldn't care less.

I agree.. but a beginner wouldn't and the main reason for grading must be to stop beginners from dropping onto blacks and freaking out/killing themselves/etc..

Moguls are great, especially with a bit of fresh on.. and a field is like a mini-park.. riding a moguled run fast and throwing in 1's, 3's (not that good yet though!), switch, etc is great fun especially if you're 'racing' a buddy down...

well worth learning to ride well IMHO

To my mind the only thing that determins the difficulty of a run is the condition of the snow on it.

A black with a foot of fresh on it, rides like heaven. An icy moguled blue which hasn't been bashed for a few days can be a pain. Having said that, recently I've developed a slightly perverse liking for the odd mogul field.

Yeah, I think you can generally call a NA black diamond a euro red and a double black diamond a euro black.. though each mountain will adjust accordingly - as mentioned GM in Cham has marked blues that should be summat else, while Kicking Horse calls 2 board-length wide 40-plus degree chutes off 20 minute hikes accessed ridges double blacks..

I ignore colours, except for brown and green which are usually trees.

I take a run that a) isn't busy, b) is interesting c) gets me to where I want to go, if what I am riding is not interesting. e.g Serraussaix is a blue, but it's no more than a cat track but gets me to and from some of the best tree runs in Morzine.
I don't need to shout about what qualifications I have got and haven't got, I know I'm good!

To be honest I don't really pay much attention to what grade the runs are. I just tend to ride what's in front of me and whatever looks fun.

I think you're playing with two variables both of which are fairly subjective.

As someone pointed out, piste grading's a mixed bag. Pretty much any resort will have at least one black, and in many cases that's just there so they can claim there's terrain for everyone. Some places have a very different approach to piste bashing, for example, which means you may find decent moguls on easy runs at some resorts, where as elsewhere you'd not find that.

Then the word "intermediate", as also pointed out, is a big bag into which most people put themselves. Probably you're no longer in that category once you stop worrying about the labels and stuff...

i pay no heed to piste colour ratings. If it looks mad icy or is mogulled to f*ck,, i'll generally try to avoid. Other than that, its point downhill time.

[edit>. to clarify as that sounded a bit stupid and conceited. im not calling myself a good boarder who rides anything np matter how steep. It's just that skiers are the ones who get wrapped up in what colour of run they do. Boarders, in my experience, generally use their eyes to decide whether its worth riding irrespective of colour gradient. Big moguls and icey death runs are generally the fun killers for me. phew, thats a bit better.
