In my experience, the pistes are 2 colours: white and brown.

If it's white then it's fine, if it's brown then it's probably still fine but your board might not like it so much.

My understanding of the classifications was that the pistes were graded on the steepest gradient point on that piste alone, so for example in North America a green circle which is the easiest cannot exceed 25%, if at any point the piste exceeded this gradient level, say by 1% for even a small distance , it would have to be classed as a blue square.

yep, so dependent on resort, as an example, the blacks runs in slovakia weren't much steeper than some sections of the blue runs on the Grand Montet in Chamonix (I was actually quite shocked at how steep some of those were to be classified blue!)

I think there is a general overuse of the term intermediate. People who have just learnt how to link turns call themselves intermediate because they can get down a mountain whereas i'm not sure i'd confidently count myself as an intermediate as i can only carve in good conditions on not too steep runs. Ah well, it's all just labels and as my boyfriend keeps telling me, piste colours are for skiiers

Yeah, but I don't think the colour classifications in europe or north america are alway relevent to snowboarders.

A classic example are the "blacks" that used to be at vallandy (might still be there)... lovely unpisted marked runs. on a powder day they are the easiest thing to ride on a snowboard.

I think what constitutes as a black or double diamond in North America sometimes falls into the euro red category.

I think flat sections should be black

My favourite black is the sache run in tignes steep and varied

rode a few blacks on my most recent trip to Alpe D'huez. I found them a real challenge, particularly where there were moguls, but felt like a good achievement. Certainly didn't have much style on them but got down ok.

Would say I am a LOW intermediate if you want to be classifying ability.

I ride blacks so long as they aren't big icy mogul fields. I try and keep my technique on all runs if possible and keep a nice carved line but start to revert to the old ways when I'm tired.
I've done backcountry and recently done a heli. I have no problems with a two hour hike and maybe more depending on the conditions.

I call myself intermediate.

I'd say there needs to be a progressing classification before people reach intermediate - to my mind intermediate is being able to ride anywhere on the mountain that's pisted without having to sideslip even the steepest groomed blacks.

I can ride pretty much anything that's put infront of me. Our whole group were riding down Double Black Diamonds in Fernie, but they're not what I would call "fun".

Most of use were going down with tight turns to scrub off speed but cruising pretty much everything else.

I would only ride blacks only to get to a blue or green.

I get confused as I tend to go with skiers on trips so never get to level myself against boarders, I think I am relatively poor unfit and lacking in style, but will happily ride blacks but shy away from off piste as its "hike it or heli it". I would have said I was intermediate, on other threads people refer to themselves as intermediate on blues who is right?
