Fresh snow fell at our reported North American summer skiing resorts over the weekend. The southern hemisphere resorts that we report on are not yet open for the summer season.

Monday is the last day of the winter season at Molltal in Austria and the glacier will reopen on the 20th June for the summer season.

Tignes, France is now closed for the winter season. None of our reported French summer skiing destinations are currently open.

Zermatt is the only open Swiss summer skiing resort we report on. There is one red run and one blue run open on Monday.

The Presena glacier in Italy is open for snowsports. The spring riding conditions are really good and the snow depth is around 3 metres on the glacier.

In Canada snow fell over the weekend on the Blackcomb glacier at Whistler and more is expected later this week.

Fresh snow fell over the weekend at Timberline on the west coast of America.

Austria
Bright sunny weather will dominate the Austrian ski scene this week with only the odd light cloud blurring the sky.

Monday is the last day of skiing at the Mölltal glacier (120/400cm) until the 20th June when the glacier will reopen for the summer season

At Kaprun (183/292cm) there is skiing down to the mid-station at the Langwiedboden. The conditions are typical for the time of year, packed in the morning but becoming soft by lunchtime.

The Dachstein glacier is closed until the 20th May when it will reopen for summer skiing.

France
The last day of the winter season at Tignes, was Sunday 11th May. The glacier is now closed in preparation for the summer ski season which is scheduled to commence on 21st June.

Saas Fee is now closed for the winter season. They are hoping to open for the summer ski season in the middle of June.

Italy
Not much has changed in Italy this week at the summer skiing destinations we report on. The Presena glacier (300cm) is currently the only open summer ski area we feature in Italy. The spring riding is holding up really well thanks to the deep snow base and there are two red runs, Presena Paradiso and Destra, open for skiing along with the Sinistra black run. A mixture of sunny and cloudy spells is forecast this week with a chance of some rain on Wednesday.

Val Senales is now closed for the winter season but the lifts are scheduled to open again on 14th June for summer skiing.

Cervinia is scheduled to open for summer snowsports until 5th July.

North America
Snow fell at the Blackcomb glacier (234cm) on Saturday and more is expected to fall on Monday and Tuesday. This has refreshed the pistes and improved the skiing on offer. Upper and Lower Panorama are in great shape and 27 trails have been groomed.

In America a light dusting of fresh snow fell at Timberline (518cm) over the weekend, although the snow depth has reduced by almost 20cm since Thursday. The resort reports great riding conditions thanks to a snow depth in excess of 5 metres and cold temperatures at the start of the week. The mercury is forecast to rise on Tuesday and this could bring rain to the area. The Conway’s, Glade and Paintbrush freestyle parks are open from 9am until 2.30pm and the Half Pipe is now open too.

Spring riding conditions dominate across the open northern hemisphere resorts. Some light snowfalls could refresh the cover in America and Canada over the weekend. The southern hemisphere resorts that we report on are not yet open for the summer season.

Stubai and Hintertux offer some of the best riding in Austria thanks to the amount of open terrain they have.

This is the last week of riding this winter season in Tignes, France. The last day of the season will be Sunday 11th May then the lifts will close in preparation for the summer ski season.

Zermatt is the only open Swiss summer skiing resort we report on but there is a good amount of skiing available on the open blue and red runs.

The Presena glacier in Italy is open for snowsports and offers excellent spring conditions thanks to the deep snow base and bright, sunny skies.

In Canada the Blackcomb glacier at Whistler is in great shape and fresh snow is forecast on Thursday and Saturday.

Timberline in America has superb conditions and the snow base at the Lodge is over 5 metres deep. Light snowfalls are forecast on Sunday.

The Dachstein glacier is closed until the 20th May when it will reopen for summer skiing.

France
Nothing has really changed in France at our reported summer skiing destinations since Tuesday. Tignes is the only open French summer skiing destination we report on. The skiing is limited to the Grande Motte area but there is a lot of variety with blue, red and black runs available. The superb spring riding conditions continue for the last week of the season before their winter season officially ends on 11th May. The glacier will then open for summer skiing on 21st June.

Val d'Isere is now closed for the winter season but the summer ski season is scheduled to start on 28th June 2008.

Les Deux Alpes is not scheduled to open for summer snowsports until 14th June.

The fantastic spring riding conditions continue on the upper slopes at Zermatt (187cm). Skiing and boarding is possible on the Matterhorn glacier paradise, Plateau Rosa, Führerpiste, Testa and Furggsattel red runs as well as the Verbindungspiste and Gandegg blue runs. The weather on Thursday is a mixture of sunny and cloudy spells, with a chance of some rain falling. It is then forecast to be dry and sunny over the weekend.

Saas Fee is now closed for the winter season. They are hoping to open for the summer ski season in the middle of June.

Italy
Not much has changed in Italy this week at the summer skiing destinations we report on. The Presena glacier (300cm) is currently the only open summer ski area we report on. The spring riding is excellent thanks to the deep snow base and there are two red runs, Presena Paradiso and Destra, open for skiing along with the Sinistra black run. The weather will be predominantly sunny over the weekend but clouds are forecast at night. This could deliver some wet precipitation on Friday and Saturday night.

Val Senales is now closed for the winter season but the lifts are scheduled to open again on 14th June for summer skiing.

Cervinia is scheduled to open for summer snowsports until 5th July.

North America
In Canada snow is expected on Thursday and Saturday at the Blackcomb glacier (234cm) which will refresh the well groomed trails. Hugh’s Heaven is still one of the groomers’ tips of the day along with Blue Line. The trails are packed in the morning becoming soft by mid morning.

The Conway’s, Glade and Paintbrush freestyle parks are open from 9am until 2.30pm although the Half Pipe is closed. Clouds are expected to build over the weekend with a chance of some snow falling on Sunday.

The Espace Killy resorts, Tignes (100/310cm) and Val d’Isere (72/110cm), both received fresh snowfalls on Wednesday with up to 5cm falling at resort level. The weekend is forecast to be predominantly sunny, ideal for taking advantage of the excellent late season conditions. Both resorts close for the winter season on Sunday, so this will be a superb end to the season. Skiing will be possible on the Grande Motte glacier at Tignes on Monday.

Les Deux Alpes is now closed for the winter season and is not scheduled to open for summer snowsports until 14th June.

Switzerland
The only open resorts we now report on in Switzerland are Saas Fee (17/260cm) and Zermatt (220cm). Saas Fee received 10cm of fresh snow on Wednesday, providing excellent riding as we head into the weekend.

Zermatt may not have reported fresh snow this week but the skiing on the glacier is superb. All thirteen summer lifts are open and the snow base is over 2 metres deep. Changeable weather is forecast before the weekend, so some fresh snowfalls are not out of the question. A mixture of sunny and cloudy spells is then expected over the weekend.

Italy
Fresh snow was reported on the glaciers at Presena (300cm) and Val Senales (50/150cm) on Tuesday. Val Senales reported the greatest snowfalls of the two, with 15cm falling, while. The riding is superb art both resorts, although more slopes are available at Val Senales where top to bottom riding is still possible.

Predominantly sunny weather is forecast at both resorts on Saturday, while Sunday will see cloudier skies at Presena and a combination of sunny and cloudy skies at Val Senales.

Cervinia is now closed for the winter season and is not scheduled to open for summer snowsports until 5th July.

North America
Snowsports are only available on the Blackcomb glacier at Whistler (0/250cm), Canada. There are thirty three groomed trails available with Upper and Lower Cloud Nine being two of the top tips at the moment. The trails are firm in the morning becoming soft towards the end of the day.

#191 Re: Twice weekly reports from SCGB.  28/04/2008 @ 16:01:53
Monday 28 April 2008

This is the last snow overview for the 07/08 winter season and what a season it has been across the northern hemisphere! However all good things must come to and end and snowsports this week is mostly possible at high altitude or glacier resorts.

There is great skiing on the upper ski areas at the open resorts in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland this week. Many received snowfalls late last week and all report deep snow depths offering good cover over their higher mountain areas.

Skiing in Scotland is only possible at Cairngorm on Monday because all but one of the other resorts have now closed for the season. The Nevis Range will be closed during the week but on Friday they will reassess the snow conditions and may be open over the weekend.

The open resorts in Colorado in America boast excellent riding conditions after some weekend snowfalls. Low temperatures coupled with sunny skies early this week make the conditions hard to beat.

Sunshine Village in the only resort now open at Banff in Canada with all runs still open offering groomed spring snow. Whistler is now the only open resort we report on in British Columbia and Blackcomb Mountain will be open for winter operations until their summer ski season starts on 9th June.

Austria
As we move further into spring the snowsports scene in Austria focuses mostly on the higher altitude glacial resorts.

Hintertux (0/335cm) saw 10cm of fresh snow fall on Friday night which refreshed the glacier for weekend snowsports. The forecast low temperatures on the upper slopes this week should preserve the fresh cover for some excellent springtime skiing.

All the slopes are still open at Kaprun (226/331cm) on Monday thanks to a fresh covering of snow that fell down to the lower elevations on Friday. Temperatures are milder on Monday but powder can be still found off the top lifts.

It is the last week to enjoy the snow at Ischgl (10/170cm) and there are spring snow conditions on Monday. However, a sharp drop in temperature is expected on Monday night and the weather is forecast to deliver some heavy snowfalls.

It is the last week of the season at Obertauern (110/210cm) and Solden (0/245cm). Both resorts are running a reduced lift service until they close on Sunday. This week you can expect softer spring snow on the lower slopes but firmer snow higher up.

The 07/08 season has now ended at Obergurgl and St Anton.

The forecast over the Austrian resorts is changeable throughout the week with sun, cloud, rain and snow expected until Friday. The weekend is then forecast to be brighter and calmer with predominantly sunny weather.

France
Although most French resorts have now closed for their winter operations there is still skiing at the high altitude and glacial resorts this week.

The upper slopes at Chamonix and Argentiere (0/615cm) are still blessed with a wintry climate with temperatures reaching below -10°C on Monday. The resort runs are now closed for the season but the Grands Montets ski area will be open until 11th May.

Spring snow conditions can be found throughout areas of the Espace Killy at Tignes (102/310cm) and Val d’Isere (104/140cm) in the last week of their winter operations. A typical spring climate this week means that the slopes will be firmer in the morning and softer after midday as the mercury rises.

It is also the last week in which you can enjoy the high altitude slopes at Val Thorens (160/200cm). The snow pack is expected to stay firmer for snowsports on the highest slopes as temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing at the peaks. Softer spring snow can be found on the runs back into the resort.

Les Deux Alpes has now closed for the winter season and will reopen for summer skiing on the glacier on 14th June.

The forecast for the French resorts shows mild temperatures and changeable weather this week but the skies are due to become calmer and clearer over the weekend.

Switzerland
Excellent conditions for snowsports exist at the high altitude open Swiss resorts this week as a typical spring climate comes into effect.

The deep cover on the glaciers at Engelberg (0/510cm) and Gstaad (10/318cm) is forecast to see more snow on Monday night, which will refresh the already excellent base for snowsports this week.

The upper slopes at Pontresina and St Moritz (25/120cm) are also expecting snow on Monday. They still offer skiing down to resort level although the cover is patchy in areas due to the thin snow pack.

Fantastic riding opportunities exist at Saas Fee (29/275cm). A freezing climate on the slopes and the promise of fresh snow on Monday make for an excellent final week’s worth of snowsports.

Skiing on the Matterhorn can still be enjoyed this week as Zermatt (0/220cm) is planning to remain open until 1st May for their winter season.

Verbier is now closed for the 07/08 ski season.

In Switzerland snow is forecast at high altitudes this week but the mild conditions lower down means this could fall as rain on the lower slopes. The weekend is forecast to be dry and bright.

Italy
Skiing in Italy is now only possible at a handful of resorts, with the best snow at high altitude.

The Foscagno, Gallo and Passo del Forno ski areas are still open for snowsports on Monday at Livigno (0/226cm) but the resorts runs are now closed. The thick snow pack on the upper area offers visitors typical spring snow conditions. The slopes are firmer in the mornings then they soften as the day progresses.

The Presena glacier at Passo Tonale (80/250cm) can be accessed from five lifts on Monday with the best skiing and riding opportunities on the groomed pistes.

All the lifts are still running at Val Senales (50/150cm) on Monday and the snow pack is preserved by freezing temperatures down to mid mountain. The snow on the glacier will remain crisp and reactive on the groomed pistes due the low temperatures forecast at altitude this week.

The winter season ended at Cervinia over the weekend but the resort will reopen for summer skiing on the glacier from 5th July until 31st August.

Snowfall at altitude but rain lower down is the weather forecast across the Italian resorts this week but the skies are due to clear by the weekend.

Andorra
The resorts we report on in Andorra have now closed for the 2007/8 season.

Norway/Sweden
Hemsedal (115/174cm) and Trysil (0/140cm) in Norway are the only resorts which are still open out of the ones we report on. There is a chance of snow at both resorts later on Monday but this will not remain for the rest of the week as mild temperatures are set to bring rain.
Geilo and Oppdal have now closed for the season 07/08.

The weather may be mild now in Sweden, but the skiing at Åre (45/57cm) and Sälen (45/99cm) is still great. Spring conditions dominate, meaning that the first runs of the day are the firmest then the snow softens as the day warms up. The weather this week will be predominantly sunny, but clouds are forecast to build on Thursday. This could unfortunately deliver wet precipitation to both resorts on Friday.

Germany
The skiing on the upper pistes at Garmisch (0/405cm) and Oberstdorf (0/300cm) is still really good thanks to the excellent base depth and low temperatures.

The temperature on the upper Zugspitze slopes at Garmisch is around freezing on Monday and it will drop a few degrees this week, which will help to preserve the great conditions. Clouds are forecast to build on Tuesday and this could bring some fresh snowfalls every day until Thursday.

The climate is a little milder at Oberstdorf but the skiing is still great in the open Nebelhorn area. The clouds expected on Monday afternoon could deliver some rain, but Tuesday is forecast to be bright and dry. Clouds are expected to move in on Wednesday night which will hopefully bring snow showers on Thursday when the temperature drops below freezing.

Bulgaria
The resorts we report on in Bulgaria have now closed for the 2007/8 season.

Scotland
On Monday the only skiing in Scotland is at Cairngorm (20/85cm). Snow is falling on Monday morning but the temperatures are forecast to rise on Tuesday bringing rain. The best conditions are on the upper pistes as lower down the cover is patchy.

The Nevis Range (15/80cm) will be closed for snowsports from Monday to Friday this week but they will review conditions on Friday and hope to reopen for the weekend.

Glencoe, The Lecht and Glenshee are now closed for the 2007/8 season.

USA
Skiing in the States is represented by a small number of open resorts this week but the conditions have improved with light snowfalls over the weekend in Colorado.

The skiing and boarding in Loveland (193cm) and Arapahoe Basin (157cm) was improved by snowfalls over the weekend, laying a good base for some late season riding. Freezing mountain temperatures and mostly sunny skies are forecast for the early part of the week and will make conditions hard to beat for this time of year!

A warmer climate over the weekend and early this week has softened the snow cover at Snowbird (358cm) in Utah but the deep snow depths offer an excellent base for spring riding this week under blue skies. Make sure to use sun lotion in the strong spring sun.

The groomed trails at Squaw Valley (91/254cm) will also offer another week of spring riding as the forecast remains unchanged with consistent sunshine expected all week.

Powder snow is still readily available at Timberline (605cm) in Oregon after snowfalls over the weekend. The temperature has risen on Monday and the expected precipitation could fall as rain on the lower elevations.

The winter season has now finished at the resorts that we report on in Vermont.

The resorts in Colorado expect sunny weather until Thursday when temperatures are forecast to fall and light snowfalls are forecast to last into the weekend. There is no change in the forecast for the Californian resorts with mostly blue skies throughout the week but some thicker cloud is expected over the weekend. Timberline in Oregon expect near half a metre of snow this week with dropping temperatures towards mid week.

Canada
There are now only two of the resorts we reports on in Canada open but there is excellent spring riding on offer at both this week.

Lake Louise at Banff (60/204cm) has now closed for snowsports but the winter season continues with full operations and excellent snow at Sunshine Village. A spring climate envelopes the lower areas but temperatures are forecast to remain below -5°C on the tops.

Heavy snow is forecast to fall over Blackcomb Mountain at Whistler (238cm) on Monday night but this could be wetter precipitation at the bottom of the lifts. The highest slopes offer the best riding conditions as changeable weather lower down could affect the snow pack.

Banff in Alberta is forecast a mostly snowy week with 15cm of snow expected fall by Friday. However Whistler expects 38cm but this will fall as rain at low levels as temperatures are forecast to be milder lower down.

European Weather Outlook
Changeable weather is forecast over the Austrian and French resorts throughout the week. The weekend is expected to be calmer and brighter. The Italian and Swiss resorts expect snowfalls at high altitude areas but rain could fall at lower elevations until Friday. Predominantly sunny weather is forecast to dominate over the weekend.

In Germany the temperature is forecast to drop below freezing at Garmisch and Oberstdorf this week, and this will be accompanied by some heavy cloud cover at points so fresh snow is not out of the question.

There is a chance of snow at the open resorts of Norway on Monday and then the milder temperatures will bring rain for the rest of the week. In Sweden the weather this week will be predominantly sunny, but clouds are forecast to build on Thursday. This could unfortunately deliver wet precipitation to both resorts on Friday.

It is going to snow in Scotland on Monday and the outlook for the rest of the week is cloudy and rainy.

North American Weather Outlook
After a sunny start to the week at the resorts in Colorado, Thursday is forecast to see a drop in temperatures and snowfalls lasting through to the weekend. The weather over the Californian resorts remains unchanged, although thicker clouds to expected to develop over the weekend. Timberline in Oregon expects more snow to fall with temperatures dropping towards midweek.

More snowfalls are expected at the two open resorts that we report on Canada. Cloudy skies and light to moderate accumulations of snow are expected this week.

Thursday 24 April 2008

This weekend heralds the end of the winter season for many more resorts but fresh snow has blessed the upper ski slopes across Europe this week. The climate is now more typical of spring though so the new powder is freshest at higher altitudes.

This week’s fresh snow has laid great foundations for glacier skiing at resorts in Austria and Italy as they prepare for spring glacier skiing operations.

The French and Swiss resorts have also been blessed by new snowfalls this week on the higher slopes. Temperatures are above freezing at mid-mountain giving rise to typical spring snow conditions under mostly sunny skies this weekend.

The open Scottish resorts also offer spring snow conditions on the well covered upper ski areas.

In America, the open resorts in Colorado have excellent skiing. They climate is suprisingly wintry for this time of year and the terrain is covered with a thick snow base. Timberline in Oregon topped a six metre average snow depth again this week following more heavy snowfalls.

In Canada the skiing at the Alberta resort has been enhanced by fresh snowfalls all week. They continue to offer powdery conditions as more snow is forecast to grace the slopes before the weekend arrives.

Austria
Fresh snow has fallen this week on the higher slopes at the Austrian resorts, making for a fantastic end to the season for some.

Hintertux (25/325cm) and Kaunertal (0/306cm) saw at least 10cm of snow fall on Tuesday on their glaciers leaving soft and powdery conditions.

The Stubai glacier, accessed from Neustift (50/280cm), received snow on Wednesday. 15cm of new snow settled on the upper slopes leaving a fresh surface for snowsports this week.

The greatest snowfalls of our reported Austrian resorts have been reported by Obergurgl (15/186cm), with 30cm falling on Tuesday. Although the cover is getting thin around resort level, you can head to the upper slopes for some excellent powdery conditions in the last few days of their winter season.

The higher slopes at Ischgl (10/170cm) had a 15cm dump of snow on Tuesday but the resort runs have been dampened by wetter precipitation due to the elevated freezing levels this week.

Rain showers are due on Friday as mountain temperatures continue to rise across Austria. The weather this weekend is expected to be brighter and drier but more rain is predicted to fall on Monday.

France
Snowfalls this week have left yet more fresh snow on the highest slopes across the resorts in France. Spring snow conditions also exist as mid-mountain temperatures have risen above freezing.

Temperatures have risen sharply but there is fresh snow on the upper pistes at Chamonix and Argentiere (50/640cm) after a 20cm increase in the upper base depth following Tuesday’s snowfalls.

Cauterets (0/306cm) in the Pyrenees will see their season finish with great spring snow conditions under predominantly sunny skies this week. A 10cm snowfall on Monday refreshed the upper ski areas.

Courchevel (119/220cm), Flaine (20/380cm), La Plagne (155/290cm) and La Rosiere (108/315cm) all have fresh snow conditions on offer after 10cm of snow fell earlier this week.

The slopes of the Espace Killy at Tignes (126/310cm) and Val d’Isere (104/140cm) were graced with 20cm of new snow on Tuesday. Pockets of powder can still be found on the upper off-piste areas. The snow is being well maintained with upper mountain temperatures still below freezing on Thursday.

The forecast across France is for mostly sunny skies over the weekend with the highest temperatures expected on Sunday. Rain showers are forecast from Monday accompanied by a slight drop in the temperatures.

Switzerland
Fresh snow has fallen at many of the open Swiss resorts this week, although spring snow can be skied especially on the lower areas.

The temperatures may be mild lower down at Andermatt (10/390cm) but the thick upper base was added to by 20cm of new snow on Wednesday. The lower slopes are now closed for snowsports but there is no shortage of snow on the upper terrain.

New snow fell on the glacier at Engelberg (0/530cm) on Wednesday, where excellent riding is available on the well groomed pistes.

35cm of snow fell on the glacier at Gstaad (20/347cm) on Tuesday, transforming the upper slopes to a powder paradise. With fewer people on the slopes this cover will stay fresh for snowsports over the weekend.

Changeable weather is forecast as we move into the weekend with the brightest skies on Saturday. Even though the temperature is forecast to drop on Monday some rain could fall.

Italy
The open Italian resorts have reported excellent powder skiing opportunities at altitude this week due the temperatures remaining low.

The glacier at Cervinia (50/230cm) is the place to be for powder skiing this week. The temperature at altitude remains around -10°C maintaining the 25cm of fresh snow that fell on Monday in a soft and heavenly state.

The Faloria area at Cortina (0/80cm) received 10cm of new snow on Tuesday.

It is the last few days of the season for Courmayeur (50/150cm) as Sunday 27th April is scheduled to be the last day of the winter season. Sunny weather is forecast over the weekend and typical spring conditions exist with the snow pack firm in the morning but softer after midday as the sun warms the snow.

Val Senales (50/150cm) boasts the lowest mountain climate of the open Italian resorts we report on this week. Excellent glacier skiing is on offer after the slopes were refreshed with 15cm of new snow on Monday.

The skies are due to become clear over the weekend after some cloudier weather on Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately rain may fall on Monday.

Andorra
The resorts we report on in Andorra have now closed for the 2007/8 season.

Norway/Sweden
Typical spring conditions are dominating the open resorts that we report on in Norway. The pistes firm up over night and then soften throughout the day.

Good conditions can be found from top to bottom at Hemsedal (122/180cm) and Geilo (90/90cm). Both resorts have packed pistes in the morning but the bottom slopes becomes slushy towards the end of the day.

At Oppdal (40/150cm) and Trysil (0/160cm) the best skiing is on the upper slopes. At Oppdal the lower pistes are predominantly soft even early in the morning and at Trysil the lower pistes have now closed.

In Sweden Sälen (50/109cm) has the deepest snow base on their upper slopes, but this does not detract from the excellent late season cover at Åre (55/74cm) too.

The late season conditions at our reported Swedish resorts are excellent this season. The mild sunny weather means that spring snow dominates, with the firmest snow available early in the morning before the sun warms the slopes. Heavy clouds are forecast to move in at the start of next week, which could bring some wet weather.

Germany
Garmisch (0/405cm) has cold temperatures on the upper areas and the heavy clouds on Thursday could deliver fresh snow before the weekend. Cloudy weather will dominate the skies over Garmisch until Saturday, and light snowfalls are expected each day. The sun will then break through a little on Sunday.

The climate is warmer at Oberstdorf (0/310cm) so spring conditions dominate on the open Nebelhorn area. The partly sunny weather on Thursday will change to heavier clouds on Friday, which could bring rain. Oberstdorf will have a mixture of sunny and cloudy spells over the weekend.

Bulgaria
The resorts we report on in Bulgaria have now closed for the 2007/8 season.

Scotland
Good skiing can still be enjoyed on the upper pistes at the open resorts in Scotland.

At Cairngorm (25/95cm) the pistes firm up overnight but soon become soft the daytime. The best cover is on the upper pistes but more rocks are beginning to show through on M1, M2 and Lady. It is still possible to get back to the car park via the Fiacaill Ridge but the cover is thin and patchy especially towards the bottom.

Similar conditions can be found at the Nevis Range (15/80cm) where the upper pistes have a good cover of soft spring snow. Lower down the cover has become patchy in places especially right at the bottom.

Glencoe (35/85cm) and The Lecht (15/25cm) are temporarily closed on Thursday. Glencoe is planning to reopen on Friday once the bad weather has passed. The Lecht well reopen once there is enough snow for skiing and boarding.

Glenshee is closed for the winter season 2007/8.

USA
The climate is still cold at Arapahoe Basin (160cm) in Colorado on Thursday and temperatures are forecast to hit -20°C with added wind chill. This is preserving conditions well making for great riding this weekend.

Snowbasin (320cm) in Utah is running two lifts on Thursday taking visitors to an array of groomed runs on the upper mountain. Snowbird (351cm) has seven lifts operating and colder temperatures provide a wintry feel to the slopes.

In California, temperatures dropped enough on Tuesday night to yield fresh snow on the peaks at Squaw Valley (91/254cm).

Sugarbush (38/152cm) and Sunday River (30/91cm) in Vermont are offering spring skiing conditions under sunny skies this week. Shedding layers is advised as temperatures are forecast to reach close to 20°C in the sunshine on Thursday.

The bumper snowfalls that were forecast came to Timberline (602cm) in Oregon this week and the average snow depth has again topped six metres. Deep powder covers the entire ski area on Thursday.

Mount Snow (30/122cm) in Vermont and Aspen (0/330cm) in Colorado are due to reopen for snowsports over the weekend for the last time this season.

Resorts in Colorado can expect snow light snowfalls on Saturday with sunny and cloudy weather on the days either side. Sunshine and mostly blue skies are forecast at the resorts in Vermont and California. The wintry weather at Timberline in Oregon is forecast to leave 24cm of snow over the weekend.

Canada
The Canadian resorts in Alberta are fairing well due to fresh snowfalls this week.

Sunshine Village in Banff, Alberta (60/208cm) has seen dustings of snow this week and has accumulated 69cm of new snow since last Friday and all of the trails are still open. It is the last chance to experience the snow at Lake Louise this season as the resort is due to close on Sunday.

It is also the final days of the season at Jasper (121cm) in Alberta. The slopes have also benefited from regular dustings this week and 40cm of new snow has settled since last Friday. More snow is expected on Thursday laying down great conditions until the lifts stop turning on Sunday.

Snow is forecast over Blackcomb Mountain at Whistler (238cm) in British Columbia. The excellent snow base has been maintained by low temperatures and the trails remain crisp and reactive.

Mont Saint-Anne (58/200cm) in Quebec will reopen for the final time this weekend.

The wintry weather is forecast to break on Saturday and sunshine and blue skies will be seen across the country. A return to a mixture of sun, clouds and snow showers is then expected to resume from Sunday.

European Weather Outlook
As mountain temperatures continue to rise across Austria, France and Italy rain showers could fall on Friday. The weekend is set to see brighter and drier skies but more rain is forecast on Monday.

In Switzerland changeable weather is forecast as we move into the weekend with the brightest skies expected on Saturday. Even though the temperature is forecast to drop on Monday some rain could fall.

In Germany cloudy weather will dominate the skies over Garmisch until Saturday, and light snowfalls are expected each day. The sun will then break through a little on Sunday. Oberstdorf will have a mixture of sunny and cloudy spells over the weekend.

It is going to be sunny in Norway on Thursday and Friday. The skies will start to cloud over on Friday night and it will remain overcast for the rest of the weekend. Sunny skies and mild temperatures will dominate in Sweden as we move into the weekend. Heavy clouds are forecast for the start of next week, which could bring some wet weather.

Scotland will have a wet and windy weekend with only the odd sunny spell. The temperatures are set to fall early next week and snow is forecast.

North American Weather Outlook
The warm and sunny weather is expected to continue at resorts in Vermont and California. Apart from some snowfalls on Saturday the resorts in Colorado are forecast sunshine and clouds over the weekend and into next week. Timberline in Oregon expects yet more cloudy and snowy weather.

The wintry weather is forecast to break on Saturday across the mountains in Canada with sunshine and blue skies. A return to a mixture of sun, clouds and snow showers is then expected to resume from Sunday.

#189 Re: Twice weekly reports from SCGB.  21/04/2008 @ 17:21:54
Monday 21 April 2008

The 07/08 ski season is still offering excellent snow conditions with fresh snow falling on Monday across resorts in Europe.

Some resorts in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland report fresh snow on Monday, adding to the upper snow cover and improving the quality of skiing on the higher ski areas. The milder climate apparent at lower elevations has caused rain to fall and some resorts runs are closed for this season.

Spring skiing is now the standard at resorts in Sweden and Norway with sunny weather forecast this week. Spring skiing can also be enjoyed on the upper terrain at the Scottish resorts as milder temperatures affect the snow pack lower down.

The American resorts offer excellent skiing in Utah and Colorado with sunny skies but cold mountain temperatures on Monday. Spring skiing conditions are on offer in Vermont for the last week of the season there.

The wintry weather in British Columbia and Alberta in Canada produced fresh snow over the weekend, laying down fresh powder conditions for visitors this week. More snow is forecast this week.

Austria
Conditions remain excellent for this time of year on the open upper ski areas across Austria.

The snow remains crisp and fresh on the glaciers at Hintertux (25/325cm) and Neustift (60/280cm). Heavy snowfalls last week boosted snow levels on the lower slopes but they are once again closed on Monday with skiing only possible down to the middle terminal.

The upper mountain climate at Ischgl (15/170cm) has maintained the best snow conditions and heavy snowfalls forecast for Monday will further improve the cover, although higher temperatures lower down will yield rain.

Obergurgl (15/162cm) is running a reduced lift service on Monday but the snow is still in great shape, preserved by consistent low temperatures.

Conditions are excellent on the glacier at Pitztal (20/290cm) following a 15cm covering of snow on Friday.

The Giggijoch and Gaislachkogl ski areas are now closed for snowsports at Solden (0/306cm) although the glacier remains open for the winter season until 4th May.

Snow and rain are forecast to dominate the skies during the first half of the week. Breaks in the weather are expected on Wednesday over some resorts with the skies gradually clearing towards the weekend, along with rising temperatures.

France
There are great late season conditions on offer across the French slopes though many resorts have now closed for the winter ski season.

The slopes at Argentiere and Chamonix (50/605cm) were refreshed by a 5cm dusting on Sunday and there are still over 75% of the lifts operating on Monday.

The Balme Mountain ski area will be open until 27th April at La Clusaz (0/240cm) with five lifts operating until then.

La Rosiere (100/300cm) has great conditions for this time of the season with deep upper snow levels and freezing temperatures down to mid mountain.

Due to excellent snow conditions this season Cauterets (0/350cm) has extended their winter season until 27th April.

Half of the lifts are still running on Monday at Meribel and Mottaret (3/210cm) taking visitors to the excellent snow covered upper slopes. Conditions are set to improve higher up as heavy snowfalls are forecast on Monday.

The 07/08 ski season has now ended at Chamrousse, Foux d’Allos, Isola 2000, La Tania, Les Carroz, Les Contamines, Les Gets, Les Orres, Pra Loup, Morzine, Puy St Vincent, Risoul, Sainte Foy, Samoens, St Gervais, Valfrejus, Valmorel and Vars.

The wintry weather is forecast to continue until Tuesday after which sunny breaks are expected. The weather is then forecast to become progressively brighter towards the weekend and temperatures are expected to rise.

Switzerland
Though more resorts closed over the weekend the snow cover at the open Swiss resorts is being improved from further snowfalls on Monday.

The resort runs are now closed at Adelboden (0/150cm) but there are five lifts operating on Monday giving access to the well covered upper mountain terrain.

The upper slopes at Engelberg (0/440cm) boast deep snow levels and further snowfalls forecast on Monday will add to this.

Snowfalls on Monday are refreshing the slopes on the glacier accessed from Gstaad (30/315cm) and Les Diablerets (0/315cm).

30cm of fresh snow on Monday at Saas-Fee (48/301cm) has pushed the upper snow depth over three metres, leaving deep powder snow for visitors to enjoy in this late season period.

The upper slopes at Verbier (5/200cm) are also benefiting from fresh snow on Monday. The heavy clouds are expected to leave a 20cm powder blanket for skiing this week.

The 07/08 ski season has now ended at Champery, Davos, Haute Nendaz, Grindelwald, Murren and Wengen.

The Swiss resorts expect the wintry weather to last until Tuesday. Wednesday will see brighter skies then but rain could fall at some resorts on Thursday. The weather is then expected to brighten towards the weekend as temperatures rise.

Italy
Only a handful of resorts that we report on are now open in Italy. However, the winter season continues as cold temperatures and snowfall on Monday at Cervinia (50/230cm) provide light powder conditions on the upper slopes.

It is snowing up high but raining at lower elevations on Monday at Cortina (0/80cm), Courmayeur (30/150cm) and Livigno (25/237cm). The highest slopes offer the best opportunities for snowsports with fresh snow on the pistes.

The Presena glacier at Passo Tonale (80/250cm) offers the only skiing in the area this week. Heavy snowfalls on the Presena Glacier on Monday are laying great snow conditions for visitors this week.

The 07/08 winter season has now ended at La Thuile, Madesimo and Madonna di Campiglio.

Wintry weather is forecast for the start of the week. The skies will change to a mixture of sunny and cloudy spells by the weekend with temperatures projected to rise.

Andorra
The resorts we report on in Andorra have now closed for the 2007/8 season.

Norway/Sweden
Spring skiing has arrived at the open Norwegian resorts that we report on following a week of sunny weather. At Trysil (0/170cm) the only skiing is on the upper pistes as they have now closed the lower area. Good skiing can still be enjoyed on the nineteen open pistes which have typical conditions for the time of year, packed in the morning and softening as the day progresses.

Spring conditions can also be found at Geilo (90/100cm), Hemsedal (127/180cm) and Oppdal (50/170cm). It is best to remain high for as long as possible as the snow on the upper area remains firmer for longer.

Lillehammer has now closed for the 2007/8 season.

Spring has also arrived in Sweden and good piste skiing can be enjoyed at both Sälen (50/119cm) and Åre (59/81cm). There is a chance of a dusting of snow on Monday at Åre but otherwise it is going to be a bright sunny week at both resorts. The pistes are packed in the morning becoming soft towards the end of the day.

Germany
It is forecast to be another snowy week in Germany. The freezing levels are expected to fall at both of the open resorts of Garmisch (0/390cm) and Oberstdorf (0/310cm).

On Monday cloudy skies are to be found at both resorts and a mixture of rain and snow is expected due to the high freezing level. It is forecast to snow on the upper pistes while in the valley the milder temperatures will bring rain. The good news is that by Tuesday the freezing level will fall and snow will be seen down to around 1800m at Garmisch and Oberstdorf until Thursday when brighter weather is expected.

There are 4km of pistes open at Oberstdorf and 9km open at Garmisch on Monday.

Bulgaria
The resorts we report on in Bulgaria have now closed for the 2007/8 season.

Scotland.
After a few weeks of wintry weather spring has arrived in Scotland and a mixture of sun and clouds are going to be found above the resorts this week.

Conditions at all four of the open resorts are very similar on Monday with packed pistes in the morning which soon soften as the day progresses and the temperatures warm up.

At Cairngorm (30/100cm) and Glencoe (35/85cm) the pistes froze on Sunday night but they will soon soften. Below the mid stations the cover has become patchy and thin in places. The Flypaper at Glencoe was in excellent shape over the weekend and is expected to remain in good condition for the week ahead.

Good skiing can also be found on the upper area at the Nevis Range (24/80cm). The upper areas are complete but lower down it is thin in places. It is also best to stick to the pisted areas for the best snow and Goose, Summit and Warrens are the top tips.

The cover at the Lecht (20/35cm) is not as good as at the other resorts. Some pistes have a full cover of spring snow and Eagle 1, Buzzard and Chairlift offer the best skiing.

Glenshee is now closed for the 2007/8 season.

USA
A variety of snow conditions are on offer this week across America with spring conditions at resorts in Vermont and sunny but cold weather at some resorts in Colorado.

There are great opportunities for snowsports at Arapahoe Basin (168cm) and Loveland (193cm) in Colorado with sunny weather overhead but low mountain temperatures maintaining a solid snow base.

The Highlands ski area at Aspen (0/330cm) in Colorado will re-open for snowsports this coming weekend for the last time this season.

Mount Snow (30/122cm) in Vermont will be open on Monday, but closed from Tuesday to Thursday. Skiing will be possible again next weekend from Friday before the last day of the season on Sunday.

Sugar Bush (38/152cm) in Vermont will remain open during the week providing spring skiing conditions until this coming Sunday. Sunshine and high temperatures are forecast until then.

Continued wintry weather has delivered 40cm of fresh snow over the weekend at Timberline (574cm) in Oregon. Powder skiing is what you can expect this week as further snowfalls are expected.

The 07/08 season has now ended at Alta, Breckenridge, Heavenly, Killington, Mammoth and Stowe.

Except for some mid week snowfalls in Utah and continued wintry weather at Timberline in Oregon, the weather across the American resorts is predominately sunny with only some light clouds this week.

Canada
The few resorts that are still operating this week in Canada offer fantastic late season conditions.

At Banff, Alberta (60/222cm) Lake Louise benefited from 26cm of fresh snow over the weekend and Sunshine Village received 50cm on Friday, leaving powder conditions for visitors this week before Lake Louise closes on 27th April.

Jasper (121cm) in Alberta will see a strong finish to their season this week as 21cm of fresh snow has graced the slopes with a layer of powder. The resort is due to close for snowsports this coming Sunday.

Mont Saint-Anne (58/200cm) will reopen for their final days of the season from Friday until Sunday, with spring snow conditions across the resort.

Whistler Mountain at Whistler (244cm) in British Columbia has now closed for the season but skiing is still possible on Blackcomb Mountain.

The 07/08 season has now ended at Blue Mountain and Tremblant.

Snow is forecast at most of the open ski resorts across Canada this week as the weather forecast for British Columbia and Alberta shows no change since last week.

European Weather Outlook
After rain and snow early in the week across the Austrian, French and Italian resorts, some breaks in the weather are expected from Wednesday. The skies are then forecast to become clearer towards the weekend but with rising temperatures.

The Swiss resorts are forecast to see the wintry weather last until Tuesday with brighter weather on Wednesday. Some resorts could see some rain lower down on Thursday after which the skies are forecast to become clearer towards the weekend, and temperatures are expected to rise.

A mixture of rain and snow is expected on Monday at the open German resorts. The freezing levels will fall on Tuesday and snow is expected until Thursday.

It is going to be another sunny week across Norway with only the odd cloudy spell. Similar weather will be seen in Sweden but there is a chance of a dusting of snow on Monday at Åre.

It is going to get steadily cloudier as the week progresses in Scotland. Temperatures will remain mild meaning that rain is expected towards the end of the week.

North American Weather Outlook
Predominately sunny weather is forecast over most American resorts this week. The exceptions are light mid-week snowfalls in Utah and continued wintry weather at Timberline in Oregon.

In Canada more snow is forecast to fall over resorts in British Columbia and Alberta this week with little change in the wintry weather conditions.

#188 Re: Twice weekly reports from SCGB.  17/04/2008 @ 14:10:18
Thursday 17 April 2008

This week has seen fresh snow fall on both sides of the Atlantic, providing fantastic late season conditions.

Fresh snow in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland means that if you are lucky enough to be heading out to the mountains at the moment you are in for a real treat. Milder weather is forecast over the weekend so the best riding will be on the higher areas.

The resorts further north still have excellent late season skiing and boarding on offer. Most of the Norwegian, Swedish and Scottish resorts are still open and have some of the best late season conditions we have seen for years.

The resorts that we report on in Andorra and Bulgaria are now closed for the 07/08 ski season.

Fresh snow fell in America this week at resorts in Colorado and Utah, further enhancing the excellent end of season conditions. Canada has not missed out on wintry weather either, with snow landing in Alberta and British Columbia.

Austria
Temperatures have risen at some areas in Austria but there has been fresh snow at all of the open resorts that we report on this week. It is the last week of the season for many resorts in Austria and powder skiing can still be enjoyed on the upper areas at a few.

Although the runs to resorts are closed at Hintertux (25/325cm) snowfall on Wednesday means that powder skiing is available on the glacier and upper ski areas.

The temperature has risen this week at Ischgl (15/270cm) but it is still below freezing at mid mountain level on Thursday. This has kept this week’s new snow on the upper mountain fresh, providing excellent late season conditions.

The slopes on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier at Kaprun (207/310cm) are also powdery on Thursday following a 15cm dump of snow on Wednesday.

There are powder conditions on the upper slopes for the last week of the ski season at the Arlberg resorts of Lech (155/440cm) and Zurs (155/440cm). St Anton (5/395cm) does not close for another 10 days and is well worth a late season visit.

The rise in temperature is expected to continue over the weekend with some rain forecast from Saturday. Sunday is expected to be drier and brighter but the rain is due to return on Monday.

France
Conditions are excellent at the French resorts following bumper snowfalls this week blanketing the upper areas with powder. The weather is set to change on Saturday over the French Alps and Pyrenees with temperatures continuing to rise this week yielding spring skiing conditions at some areas.

Argentiere and Chamonix (45/610cm) are reporting the deepest upper snow base of the season amongst the French resorts that we report on. 35cm of snow on Tuesday added to this and means that powder skiing is still available on Thursday.

There are still pockets of untracked powder to be found off-piste at La Plagne (115/305cm) following almost daily snowfalls this week.

The resort runs at Morzine (0/250cm) are now closed however a 30cm dump of fresh snow on Tuesday means the upper slopes still have amazing snow cover. Lovely powder snow is also accessible just off the sides of the pistes on Thursday.

The Espace Killy resorts of Val d’Isere (107/130cm) and Tignes (124/290cm) have enjoyed a good week for snowsports. There has been little change in the mountain climate and fresh snowfalls have freshened up the on and off-piste cover.

The high altitude skiing remains fantastic at Val Thorens (195/235cm) due to low mountain temperatures and 20cm of snow falling on Tuesday.

Valmorel (28/240cm) will finish their season this weekend in great style. The resort has been rewarded with powder conditions following a 40cm dump on Tuesday.

After the recent wintry weather, the weekend is expected to be clearer. A combination of sunny and cloudy spells is forecast accompanied by higher mountain temperatures. The skies are due to cloud over by next week and this could deliver further snowfalls.

Switzerland
Fresh snow this week can still be found on the upper pistes across Switzerland. Milder temperatures have led to thinning of the cover on the lower pistes.

Skiing is possible down to the middle station at Champery (0/120cm) however the upper terrain has the best conditions. 20cm of fresh snow fell on Monday leaving an excellent base for high altitude riding.

The Jakobshorn area at Davos (80/277cm) received a 5cm sprinkling of snow on Wednesday adding to the 25cm that fell on Tuesday.

An 18cm dump of snow on Wednesday left fresh track opportunities on the upper slopes at Murren (65/345cm). The slopes at Wengen (0/145cm) have also been graced with fresh snow this week although the lower runs are now closed for snowsports.

The riding conditions were improved with a sprinkling of snow on Monday at Pontresina/St Moritz (25/120cm). A reduced lift service will run until the end of their season in May.

The forecast for the Swiss resorts shows more wintry weather although the higher temperatures are expected to remain. Sunnier weather is expected over the weekend at some areas. The skies are forecast to yield rain by early next week as mountains temperatures increase further.

Italy
The temperatures at the open Italian resorts have remained low this week and conditions are still typical of winter following snowfalls this week.

Full operations continue at Cervinia (40/210cm) this week with great piste skiing on offer owing to freezing temperatures and sustained grooming efforts.

A dusting of snow on Monday refreshed the snow cover on the higher slopes at Courmayeur (40/160cm).

Snowfalls earlier this week improved the conditions at Livigno (35/233cm) and Madonna di Campiglio (70/110cm). The new snow has been kept fresh by the freezing mountain climate.

Val Senales (50/150cm) reported 15cm of settled snow on Tuesday adding to the already excellent snow conditions.

The wintry weather at the Italian resorts is forecast to continue although a break in the clouds is expected, providing brighter skies on Sunday. More fresh snow is projected to hit the slopes by early next week.

Andorra
The resorts we report on in Andorra have now closed for the 2007/8 season.

Norway/Sweden
It is sunny on Thursday across the open Norwegian resorts that we report on and it is set to remain so all weekend.

There hasn’t been any fresh snow since Monday but conditions are still very good across the resorts. The best conditions are on the upper slopes, especially at Oppdal (60/170cm) which hasn’t had any snow for a week now. Lower down the pistes are packed and only become soft towards the end of the day due to the low temperatures.

Sälen (50/127cm) has the greatest snow cover of our reported Swedish resorts although the Stöten i Sälen area is closed for the winter ski season. Despite the snow base being not as substantial at Åre (60/89cm) there is still more than enough snow on the ground for great riding.

Sunny weather is forecast at Sälen over the weekend although some clouds will move in on Saturday. Åre is predicted cloudy skies before the weekend that could deliver some light snowfalls, then sunny skies will dominate from Saturday.

Germany
Most resorts in Germany are now closed for the season and it is only possible to ski on the upper areas at Garmisch (0/420cm) and Oberstdorf (0/320cm).

Snow this week improved the on and off-piste cover at both resorts. Oberstdorf received 30cm of snow on Wednesday while Garmisch reported 25cm falling on Tuesday, providing both resorts with beautiful late season powder conditions.

Cloudy weather is expected at both resorts over the weekend although only Garmisch is forecast any significant snowfalls, which are predicted to fall on Monday and Tuesday next week.

Bulgaria
The resorts we report on in Bulgaria have now closed for the 2007/8 season.

Scotland
Great conditions can still be found across Scotland and fresh snow is still been reported at Cairngorm (35/110cm). At Cairngorm the slopes were groomed on Wednesday night and on Thursday morning they are now covered in fresh snow.

At The Lecht (25/45cm) the cover is spring like, firm in the morning becoming softer as the day develops. Good skiing can be found on Eagle 1, Osprey, Buzzard, Snowy Owl Chairlift and Magic Carpet.

At Glencoe (35/85cm) it is best to stick to the upper slopes as lower down the cover has become patchy in places and intermediates should stick to Cliffy.

The Nevis Range (24/80cm) has high winds on Thursday which has upset the lift operations. The wind has packed down the pistes so it is essential to ride with care.

Glenshee is now closed for the 2007/8 season.

USA
Whilst spring snow conditions are in full force across resorts in California and Vermont, resorts in Utah and Colorado have seen yet more snow this week.

Alta (406cm) has the thickest base of the resorts that we report on in Utah. Visitors will be welcomed by powder conditions when they reopen for snowsports on Friday following a 23cm dump on Tuesday.
