Monday 10 July 2006 Introduction There are bright sunny skies across Austria which makes up for the wet snow underfoot. The wet weather has moved aside for brilliant sunny skies over the French glacier resorts. The Italian resorts are very similar with brilliant sunshine for great summer skiing. Switzerland has good skiing on offer under bright sunny skies too. It is going to be a wet week at the Blackcomb Glacier in Canada whilst at Timberline they have a glorious week ahead with good snow underfoot. Great snow conditions across New Zealand with some new snow over the weekend and great packed powder conditions on-piste. Turoa and Whakapapa have received the most new snow. Conditions are slowly but surely improving in Australia apart from at Mount Baw Baw which has had to close due to lack of snow. It is forecast to snow across Argentina this week but high winds will effect lift operations. Chile is having a much better time than Argentina with all open resorts receiving fresh snow over the weekend. Portillo received 65cm of fresh snow this weekend for excellent conditions today.
Austria The sun is shining brightly over the Austrian resorts but conditions underfoot are very wet and slushy at all resorts. It is still best to ski early in the morning at Hintertux (140cm) before the full strength of the sun takes its toll on the snow. The same is true at Kaprun (113cm) so a trip to the lake at Zell am See in the afternoons would be a good alternative. Sunny skies at Kaunertal (60cm) and Molltal (220cm) make up for the heavy conditions on the pistes and at least there is a chance to top up the tan later in the day. Similar conditions exist at Stubai (100cm) where the snow pack is softening and at Solden (100cm) on the 3km of open pistes. The Dachstein Glacier continues to be closed for skiing.
France Les Deux Alpes (300cm), Tignes (260cm) and Val d’Isere (60cm) all have sunny skies today for excellent summer skiing. Expect the hard packed early morning snow to soften quickly under the strong sun.
Switzerland There is good news at Engleberg (300cm) as the electrical problem has now been fixed enabling skiing to recommence on the glacier. Saas Fee (199cm) continues to have 4 pistes open with typical spring conditions and the park is open for general use. Zermatt (140cm) has a variety of skiing on blue and red runs, perfect to practice carving turns before the next winter season.
Italy Sunshine is the order of the day for the Italian summer resorts today. Cervinia (150cm), Presena (70cm) and Val Senales (80cm) all have skiing on packed snow that will soften quickly due the sunny skies.
North America The beautiful sunny skies today at Whistler (155cm) are going to disappear as of tomorrow and it is forecast to rain. This wet weather look set to continue right through the week. Timberline (185cm) continues to have good skiing on offer, the slopes do soften later in the day but in general the conditions are holding well.
Australia Further dustings of snow have fallen in Australia over the weekend and the lower temperatures have enabled the snow guns to start firing again. Falls Creek (15/61cm) has a fair cover of packed snow and there is a chance of further snowfall later today. Intermediate skiers should head for Towers, Drovers and Ruined Castle while freestylers will have a great time in the Castle Terrain Park. Conditions are on the up at Mount Buller (5/30cm) as the dusting of fresh snow has now firmed up and will soften throughout the day. Bourke St, Kofflers, Summit and Lt Buller Spur are all open for general use. At Mount Hotham (21/55cm) it is best to head for Big D, Basin, Sun Run and Slalom Gully where they have a good covering of packed snow. Conditions on Summit are being reported as fair. The best snow at Perisher Blue (8/28cm) can be found on the sheltered slopes which have been groomed as rest of the resort has become windblown. There is a similar situation at Thredbo (10/45cm) where skiers are recommended to head to the tree lined slopes. The recent snow flurries accompanied by snowmaking have given Selwyn Snowfields (5/15cm) a real boost. It is now possible to ski Township from the very top, it will be a day for riding on fresh manmade snow. Mount Baw Baw has had to close temporarily due to a lack of snow; they are waiting for the temperatures to fall again so that they can resume snowmaking or even better for some snow to fall. Ben Lomond is yet to open for skiing.
New Zealand The riding is really good across New Zealand with packed powder snow being the main on-piste conditions. Cardrona (35/100cm) has great on-piste conditions and variable off-piste. Coronet Peak (60/80cm) received 2cm of new snow on Saturday but this has not really changed the snow cover. Mount Dobson (100/115cm) has some moderate wind today but this is not strong enough to enforce lift closures. Mount Hutt (160/160cm) is also experiencing wind today but it is affecting the lifts there. The Up and Go Terrain Park lift may open later if the winds drop. Mount Olympus (135/135cm) has had a fantastic opening weekend with a base of windblown powder throughout the area for excellent riding. Mount Lyford (175/175cm) has a mixture of wind blown powder snow and packed powder snow. There are still some unmarked hazards off-piste so be cautious. The lifts at Porter Heights (100/150cm) are closed due to high winds, but the wind should die down over the next couple of days. The snowmaking at Rainbow (20/32cm) is helping to maintain and improve the snow cover. More natural snow is needed to really improve the conditions and provide complete cover. At The Remarkables (70/80cm) there is packed and groomed powder snow on-piste with variable conditions off-piste, so ride with care if you do leave the marked trails. Treble Cone (42/95cm) received 7cm of new snow on Saturday to add to the base of packed powder snow. Turoa (160/160cm) and Whakapapa (105/150cm) both have excellent on-piste conditions with 30cm of new snow. The off-piste is best avoided due to an icy crust.
Chile The Chilean resorts have received new snow over the weekend for some great skiing this week. Antillanca has been able to open on Sunday for the first turns of the season. Chillan (50/300cm) has much improved conditions with 50cm of new snow falling this weekend. El Colorado (60/70cm) has received almost as much snow as Chillan for powder skiing across the resort. La Parva (30/80cm) also received new snow this weekend and more is possible this week. Portillo (70/120cm) also has excellent powder conditions with 65cm of new snow falling over the last couple of days. They too are expecting more snow throughout the week. Valle Nevado (55/80cm) has very good conditions that will further improve with snow falling today. The link to La Parva and El Colorado is closed at present. Chapa Verde is still yet to open.
Argentina The snow forecast for the weekend did not appear so there hasn’t been much change in conditions. Unfortunately it is raining today and there are also strong winds giving a very wet sloppy snow pack. The best conditions are at Las Lenas (50/160cm) where there is a packed base and a chance of snow later today which will hopefully carry on falling until Thursday. At both Cerro Catedral (0/155cm) and Chapelco (58/203cm) there are wet conditions across the resorts. Snow may fall on the upper slopes at Chapelco but the high winds look set to stay in the area preventing them from opening more lifts. Monday 3 July 2006 Introduction There is wonderful sunny weather in Austria today with conditions under foot becoming wet very quickly. The weather for the Italian resorts is mostly sunny although the temperature is creeping up, especially at Presena. Saas Fee in Switzerland has now opened for summer skiing with beautiful sunny skies overhead. The French summer skiing scene is in full flow with Val d’Isere open for skiing along with Tignes and Les Deux Alpes. It will be a lovely sunny day at Blackcomb, Canada and Timberline, USA. There was no new natural snow for the New Zealand resort this weekend but Rainbow is now open. A dusting of snow has fallen in Australia but more is desperately needed so that the season can get well under way. Good skiing can be found at Las Lenas and Chapelco in Argentina. The conditions for the Chilean resorts are unchanged this week with skiing on packed powder snow.
Austria Wet and slushy conditions exist across the Austrian resorts due to the warm sunny weather overhead. Hintertux (140cm) still has 25km of skiing open despite the wet snow. At Kaprun (135cm) they have had to close the slopes from the top station down to the Alpincenter due to the warmer weather but there is still a lot of skiing on offer higher up. Kaunertal (60cm) continues to have skiing on offer but conditions are softening rapidly so it is best to head up to the glacier early then make the most of the sunny weather later in the day to top up the tan. The Molltal Glacier (240cm) has reopened today following the bad weather at the end of last week. Solden (100cm) and Stubai (120cm) both have lovely sunny weather today. Unfortunately the sunny weather means that there is only 2km of skiing now at Stubai. The Dachstein Glacier continues to be closed for skiing.
France Les Deux Alpes (300cm) has fine sunny weather today although there is the threat of stormy weather moving in this afternoon. This is not for definite though, so fingers crossed it will miss the glacier skiing area. The fine summer skiing continues at Tignes (260cm). It is such a fantastic way to spend a summer morning, skiing amongst beautiful scenery. Val d’Isere (220cm) is open for summer skiing on the Pissaillas glacier. The 4 lifts open are Cema, Cascade, Montet and Cote 3000 providing access to 7 runs.
Switzerland There is good news for summer skiing in Switzerland as Saas Fee (210cm) with 4 pistes open for general use. Zermatt (150cm) and Engleberg (300cm) are also open with the best snow first thing in the morning.
Italy The good skiing conditions are unchanged in Italy. Cervinia (150cm) has sunny skies today with some light clouds dotted about. Val Senales (120cm) is similar with brilliant sunshine for fantastic views to accompany the summer skiing. Presena (200cm) has more cloud but this looks as though it will burn off this afternoon. The snow pack will be pretty wet and heavy as the temperature is quite high.
North America There is glorious weather at Blackcomb (162cm) again today. The park is still open but it is good to bear in mind that it takes an hour to reach the glacier and the last lift up is at 1.45pm. It is also going to be a wonderful sunny day at Timberline, USA (190cm) with skiing on packed pistes which soften during the day.
Australia At last a fresh dusting of snow has fallen at most of the Australian resorts. This has helped Falls Creek (15/61cm) open Ruined Castle and Scott's but the best skiing can still be found in the morning before the snow softens. Good skiing and boarding can be found on Towers and Drover's Dream and the best area for beginners is the Mouse Trap/Boardwalk area. Mount Buller (12/29cm) has a fair cover of packed snow on Bourke St, Kofflers, Summit and Little Buller Spur, not much of a change from last week but there is snow forecast for Wednesday which is excellent news. Despite fresh snow at Mount Hotham (8/55cm) conditions have not changed that much with a fair cover of snow across the open areas. The snow at Perisher Blue (4/28cm) is really suffering and they are reporting wet snow cover with the lower areas being soft, however the groomers have been busy creating a perfect corduroy finish. It is a similar situation at Selwyn Snowfields (5/12cm) where they have wet snow which is easy to turn on. Beginners will have great fun on New Chum Bowl while more advanced skiers should head for Township. There are typical spring conditions at Thredbo (0/28cm) and many of the trails are very sticky in the afternoon. Antons and Supertrail are maintaining their condition better than other areas of the mountain. Nothing has changed at Mount Baw Baw (0/10cm) as there is still limited skiing and boarding on a poor cover of soft machine manmade snow on Tank Hill. Ben Lomond is yet to open for skiing.
New Zealand There has not been any new snow for the New Zealand resorts this weekend, although the snow received last week has been packed for groomed and packed powder on-piste and mostly skier packed powder off-piste. Cardrona (30/100cm) has cloudy skies today, as do Coronet Peak (55/80cm), Mount Dobson (60/100cm) and the Remarkables. Some of the other resorts are a little more fortunate with some sunshine joining the cloud today. These include Porter Heights (80/150cm), Turoa (140/140cm) and Whakapapa (75/75cm). Turoa does have fantastic snow depth with an average base of 140cm providing skiing from the top of the Express right down to the base of the resort. Mount Lyford (120/120cm) also has excellent conditions throughout the area with groomed packed powder snow on-piste. The off-piste is also really good but there are still unmarked obstacles so exercise caution if you head off the marked trails. Rainbow (10/30cm) is now open although they could do with more fresh snow for complete snow cover. The good news is that the conditions are ideal for snow making at the base area around the beginner and intermediate zones. Mount Olympus has now moved the opening date back to the 8th July.
Chile Very similar conditions across Chile this week with skiing on packed powder snow on-piste. Termas de Chillan (20/280cm) has great snow depth, especially on the upper areas. These are unfortunately the areas expecting strong winds today. The settled snow cover across the Three Valleys resorts of El Colorado (35/35cm), La Parva (35/47cm) and Valle Nevado (40/50cm) is being well maintained with grooming and temperatures that are not too high. Portillo (30/80cm) still has great skiing on the packed snow, with the best conditions on the upper slopes. Antillanca and Chapa Verde are yet to open.
Argentina The situation in Argentina is the same as last week. Operations at Cerro Catedral (0/190cm) are still being effected by the strong winds in the area. The forecast for the week shows lighter winds on Tuesday and Thursday so hopefully there will be some skiing on these days. Las Lenas (50/160cm) also has high winds on exposed lifts and runs but this has not prevented them from opening the lifts. Good skiing can be found across the area on packed pistes. Chapelco (62/205cm) has good skiing as well but the best can be found on the upper slopes as there are a few exposed rocks on the lower slopes. Monday 26 June 2006 Introduction Austria is looking more pleasant today with drier skies and packed snow conditions. Only the Dachstein glacier is yet to open lifts for skiers and boarders. Val Senales and Presena in Italy have similar conditions to Austria with mostly sunny skies and good snow cover. Cervinia has also opened for skiing although they could get some rain later today. Engleberg and Zermatt, Switzerland, are having a great summer season although it could get wet at Zermatt. The French resorts of Tignes and Les Deux Alpes are still having a great time although Val d’Isere is not presently open for skiing. The Canadian Blackcomb skiing and States Timberline skiing is having a great time with sunny skies for excellent summer riding. The skies are mostly sunny over the New Zealand resorts for what looks set to be a brilliant week of skiing. Despite the limited snow cover on the lower slopes, Australia has good early season conditions for them. The only resort yet to open is Ben Lomond. Argentina still has a bit of work to do until the season really kicks off. Las Lenas has good snow but Cerro Catedral is closed today and Chapelco is still not yet open. Chilean skiing has had a boost with fresh snowfall over the weekend at almost all of the resorts.
Austria The weather across the Austrian resorts has settled down and dried out a little, which is very much a good thing for summer skiing. Hintertux (170cm) has fog high up that should clear up as the morning progresses. Kaprun (185cm) has plenty of snow cover with 54cm of snow at the Alpincenter. The bad news is that the snow is wet and heavy. The snow cover at Kaunertal (70cm) has decreased slightly but the skiing is still well served with all 8 lifts open. There is great summer skiing on the Molltal glacier (250cm) with well maintained snow conditions and good depth. Solden (330cm) opened this weekend for a great start to their summer season. They have excellent depth on the glacier with 2 lifts running for skiers and boarders. The Stubai glacier (150cm) has 4km of slopes groomed for action. The Dachstein glacier is yet to open for summer skiing.
France Les Deux Alpes (300cm) has great skiing on the glacier with dry skies and plenty of snow cover. Tignes (260cm) is in a similar situation and has sunnier skies than Les Deux Alpes. Val d’Isere is presently not open for skiing.
Switzerland At Engleberg the great skiing on the Titlis glacier (300cm) continues this week and the Jochpass lifts have been opened due to the excellent snow cover. Zermatt (150cm) is skiing well but it looks as though more rain could fall this week. Saas Fee is not yet open for summer skiing.
Italy Great summer skiing today across the Italian resorts. Cervinia (150cm) is now open although some rain may be on the horizon. The snow cover is very good and this should hold up well even if rain does come. Val Senales (120cm) and the Presena glacier (280/330cm) have fine conditions with mostly sunny skies.
North America The sunny weather is continuing at the Blackcomb Glacier (162cm) although this does mean that the snow is pretty soft. This said the summer skiing still looks really promising although at present there is no reliable lift information available. The temperature has warmed up at Timberline in the States so you can expect soft snow conditions. This does not really detract from the great summer skiing and boarding on offer.
Australia There has been a dusting of snow this weekend for the Australian resorts, adding to the packed bases of man made snow. More snow is also predicted to fall this week. Falls Creek (4/50cm) has good snow cover on the upper slopes, with limited lower slope snow. To be fair this is typical of all of the Australian resorts at the moment. Mount Baw Baw (0/9cm) has limited snow cover with only Tank Hill open for skiing. Mount Buller (12/34cm) is looking healthier and has the deepest lower slope depth. The best areas at Buller are Bourke St, Kofflers and Summit with around 34cm of snow. Mount Hotham (4/55cm) has good skiing on Big D, Summit trainer, Basin and Slalom Gully. Perisher Blue (4/28cm) has been blasting out man made snow through the night to add to the cover in Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes and Blue Cow. They will also host night skiing on Tuesday at Front Valley. Selwyn Snowfields (5/15cm) has also been doing the man made snow trick on New Chum Bowl, the Ski School Rope Tow and Township. They are also hoping to increase the amount of open terrain this week. Thredbo (0/28cm) has good skiing on the upper areas thank to the base of man made and a dusting of fresh snow. Ben Lomond is yet to open, as it normal, but should open in July.
New Zealand Cardrona (30/100cm) opened this weekend for great skiing. Expect this to continue throughout the week. Coronet Peak (55/80cm) has great conditions with skiing on machine packed powder snow. Mount Dobson (60/100cm) is thankfully open through the week now with excellent early season conditions. Mount Hutt (130/130cm) is open for snowsports with fantastic snow depth throughout the area. The weather looks set to remain dry and bright. Mount Lyford (120/120cm) are hosting brilliant conditions thanks to the snow received last week. Thanks to the recent snow at Porter Heights (80/150cm) they have opened earlier than expected with brilliant conditions for the start of the season. The Remarkables (60/65cm) have also opened and the week ahead looks good. Turoa (140/140cm) has fantastic conditions as does Whakapapa (85/85cm) for great skiing on with sunny skies and some wind today. Treble Cone is scheduled to open on Tuesday 27th June. Mount Olympus have brought their opening date forward to the 1st July. Rainbow is also planning on opening on the 1st.
Chile Chillan (20/280cm) is still looking really good with fantastic snow depth on the upper areas. The Three Valleys resorts of El Colorado (40/50cm), La Parva (35/45cm) and Valle Nevado (40/50cm) are all skiing well with 5cm of new snow over the weekend. Portillo (35/85cm) has received 10cm of new snow for great early season skiing and boarding. Antillanca is still yet to open, as is Chapa Verde.
Argentina Las Lenas (150/380) is open and has the best snow depth of our three reported Argentinean resorts. Cerro Catedral has overcast skies with the chance of some rain and it is windy today. The lifts and runs are unfortunately all closed today. Although scheduled to open on Saturday Chapelco is still reporting as closed but we will give a further update on Thursday. Monday 19 June 2006 Introduction It is going to be a wet week in Austria and the weather is beginning to take its toll on the snow. There is more brilliant sunshine, however, for snowsports fans in Italy at both Val Senales and the Presena glacier. The Swiss resorts of Engleberg and Zermatt are skiing well although the changeable weather today may bring some rain later today. The French summer skiing started in true form this weekend with both Les Deux Alpes and Tignes opening for snowsports. In Canada there are at last bright sunny skies at the Blackcomb Glacier. Timberline in the States also has brilliant blue skies for fantastic summer skiing today. New Zealand now has some fantastic skiing on offer with fresh snow falling over the weekend and continuing today at some resorts. This is a fantastic start to their 2006 season so let’s hope that this continues all season. Limited skiing can be found under sunny skies in Australia. Las Lenas and Cerro Catedral, Argentina are now open for the season with excellent conditions but high winds have prevented the lifts from operating. Almost all of the reported Chilean resorts are now open, with only Antillanca and Chapa Verde needed to complete the set.
Austria The weather is not helping the conditions in Austria. The week ahead is forecast to be wet and this will add to the already wet conditions on the Austrian Glaciers. Hintertux (200cm) has 25km of pistes open for general use, the sunny weather has started to take its toll though and the pistes are softening up quickly. Kaprun (257cm) is reporting wet snow across the glacier but it is still possible to ski down to the Alpincenter. Neither Kaunertal (100cm) nor Stubai (200cm) have much skiing on offer, there is 8km at Kaunertal and 2km at Stubai. At both resorts the snow softens quickly so head up to the top bright and early. The glaciers at Pitztal, Solden and Dachstein remain closed.
France Tignes and Les Deux Alpes both opened for summer skiing in the glacier’s this weekend. Tignes has some cloud interrupting the sunshine although Les Deux Alpes has clearer skies. The snow cover is very good at both areas for fantastic summer skiing on typical summer conditions of hard packed and icy snow in the morning with soft and wet snow around lunch time. Val d’Isere is planning to start summer skiing and boarding at the end of this week.
Switzerland Engleberg is still skiing really well on the Titlis glacier under brilliant sunny skies this morning. There is some cloud predicted to move in this afternoon though which might be accompanied by lightening. Zermatt also has changeable weather today which may bring some rain. Saas Fee is not yet open for summer skiing.
Italy The Presena glacier is again having fine weather blessing those opting for some Italian summer skiing. The snow cover is still around 3 metres on the glacier which is excellent and there are 4 out of 6 lifts open for access to the snow. Val Senales may have less snow depth but the skiing and boarding is still great there too. They also have fantastic sunny weather and blue skies today, although the clouds could move in and bring some rain this week. The skiing is currently unavailable at Cervinia although they are planning to open for summer skiing this week on 24th June.
North America The weather has improved at the Blackcomb Glacier (162cm), at last the rain has stopped falling and the sky is now bright and sunny. The temperatures have also lowered which has benefited the snow pack which has become packed instead of wet. The cloud has moved on from the skies over the USA resort of Timberline too for great riding on packed snow cover. The Magic Mile and Palmer lifts are open from 7am until 1.30pm, although the Magic Mile Skyride is open until 3pm inline with the Half Pipe and the park on Otto Lang closing times.
Australia There is still limited skiing available in Australia today but snowmaking has allowed one or two more runs to open at some resorts. It is going to be a bright sunny week down under which will not help the situation to improve. Thredbo (0/31cm) continues to have the greatest variety of skiing on offer. The 3.2km Supertrail is now open along with Snowgums, unfortunately conditions on High Noon have become very hard packed and it is now best suited to more advanced skiers. Intermediates however have some choice off the Cruiser Quad Chair. Falls Creek (4/50cm) has also seen an improvement in conditions thanks to the efforts of the snowmakers. It is now possible to ski on Towers, Drover's Dream and the Boardwalk while beginners are recommended to ski on Mousetrap. Snowmaking at Mount Buller (7/24cm) has been very effective with skiing off Bourke St, BB2, Summit, Kofflers and Recovery Rope Tow. Selwyn Snowfields (2/10cm), Mount Hotham (2/50cm) and Mount Baw Baw (0/10cm) have very limited skiing and low temperatures are preserving the little snow that there is. Ben Lomond is yet to open.
New Zealand Coronet Peak is skiing really well on increased snow depth thanks to recent snowfalls. Mount Hutt is having a fantastic time with 35cm of new snow overnight to really boost the conditions. There is limited lift operation at present while they avalanche clear certain areas. Turoa and Whakapapa have both had around 20cm of new snow already today, so are currently closed due to bad weather. This will hopefully ease of later today for some brilliant fresh tracks tomorrow. Mount Dobson is still closed at the moment but a further update will be given on Thursday. Cardrona and Mount Lyford are scheduled to open on 23rd June, The Remarkables on 24th June, Treble Cone on 27th June, Rainbow on 1st July and Mount Olympus is scheduled to open on 9th July. Porter Heights have changed their opening date from 28th to the 27th June.
Chile Termas de Chillan is open for skiing although at present there are no reliable snow depth or lift figures available. They do have a good amount of snow for this early season in the season and they have more forecast to fall today and tomorrow. The Three Valleys resorts of El Colorado, La Parva and Valle Nevado are all open for skiing and boarding now with between 30 and 60cm of snow cover. The packed powder snow is very good on-piste although the off-piste conditions are less favourable as there are still rock obstacles around. Portillo is also open and had a great first weekend to their 2006 season. The snow cover is also of packed powder for some great on-piste skiing and boarding. Antillanca is scheduled to open on 24th June and Chapa Verde is yet to open.
Argentina Cerro Catedral (5/200cm) and Las Lenas (150/380cm) are now open for the season with amazing conditions on offer. At Cerro Catedral 60cm of fresh snow has fallen in the last 24 hours, unfortunately the lifts are shut due to the high winds. There is a similar situation at Las Lenas and the high winds are not due to subside until the end of the week. Chapelco is not set to open until this weekend. Monday 12 June 2006 Introduction It will be another week of sunny skies and great skiing in Austria. There is also nice weather for skiers in Italy with Presena and Val Senales now both open for summer sliding. There is more fine weather this week for skiers at the Swiss resorts of Engleberg and Zermatt too. The French resorts of Les Deux Alpes, Val d’Isere and Tignes are unfortunately closed in preparation for summer skiing. It is going to be a wet week at Blackcomb, Canada whereas Timberline in the States is much finer with a mixture of sunny and cloudy skies. In New Zealand Mount Hutt opened over the weekend and is skiing well. Coronet Peak did not open but they are expecting to open later this week thanks to today’s heavy snowfall and cold weather. Mount Dobson’s lifts are affected by the wind at present. The other New Zealand resorts are yet to open. The season in Australia is now underway with most resorts now open, Thredbo had 25cm of fresh snow this weekend. The resorts of Las Lenas and Cerro Catedral in Argentina are set to open on the 16th and 17th June respectively. The Chilean resorts are yet to open for skiing.
Austria Austria is going to have a bright sunny week following the snow of last week. The excellent snow conditions of last week are still holding up at Hintertux (235cm) and Kaprun (310cm). Hintertux continues to have 25km of skiing open while at Kaprun it is still possible to ski down to the Alpincenter. Despite a lower snow depth at Kaunertal (130cm) they still have 36km of skiing open for general use and these are being reported as well groomed. The Molltal glacier is due to reopen on the 15th June following a month of maintenance. Pitztal, Solden and Dachstein are not set to reopen this week.
France The glacier at Tignes is now closed for skiing but it is scheduled to open for summer skiing from 17th June. The Pissaillas glacier at Val d’Isere will be open for summer skiing this year from 24th June to the 15 August. Les Deux Alpes is also closed but will open for summer skiing from 17th June. Alpe d’Huez has taken the decision not to open for summer skiing this year and possibly not for the next few seasons, due to melting of the Sarenne glacier.
Switzerland Zermatt has some great weather today although there will be some clouds moving over. The only down side to the lovely weather is that is makes for softer snow cover. There is fine weather for skiers at Engleberg on the Titlis glacier (320cm) today which is expected to last all week. This fine weather and the rise in the freezing level does mean that the snow will be softer though. Saas Fee is not yet open for summer skiing.
Italy More excellent summer conditions for skiers and boarders at the Presena glacier with 280-330cm of snow cover and mostly sunny skies. Val Senales has even less cloud cover for their first week of summer skiing after opening this weekend. The temperature in the valley is around 10°C, although it as only 1°C on the glacier. This is really helping the snow conditions meaning that the skiing will be on packed snow early on, softening as the day progresses. The skiing is currently unavailable at Cervinia although they are planning to open for summer skiing on 24th June.
North America The Blackcomb Glacier (162cm) is beginning to suffer this week under the rain which does not seem to have any intention of subsiding. It is another great week with fine weather at Timberline (215cm) in the States. Great news as this looks set to continue all week although this will mean softer snow.
Australia The season is now underway at the majority of Australian resorts. The open resorts all need more snow as skiing remains limited but at least they all opened on time. The best skiing can be found at Thredbo (0/31cm) which has benefited from 25cm of new snow this weekend. They have runs open for all abilities, experts looking for speed should head for High Noon, and intermediates will have lots of fun on The Cruiser while beginners have Friday Flat. The snow does become soft towards the end of the day. Falls Creek (7/10cm) has skiing on the Boardwalk and conditions are described as ‘packed manmade snow’. At Mount Baw Baw (2/2cm) they desperately need more snow and the only skiing can be found on Tank Hill. The skiing is reported as icy manmade snow. The first day of skiing at Mount Buller (5/20cm) was today following a weekend of celebrations, there are 2 lifts open and a beautiful sunny week is forecasted. Mount Hotham (6/20cm) only has skiing on Big D, they are reporting a light covering of snow on the peaks and lots of snowmaking is in progress across the resort. Conditions at Perisher Blue (5/31cm) had a boost with 15cm of fresh snow yesterday. They have skiing available on Front Valley where the snow is dry and firm it is possible to find pockets of windblown soft snow. Selwyn Snowfields (2/12cm) has limited skiing on New Chum, once more snow arrives they will start to open other areas.
New Zealand Mount Dobson (30/60cm) is affected by strong winds leading to the closure of all of the lifts. The wind looks as though it may ease and then increase towards the end of the week again. Mount Hutt opened for skiing this weekend but is closed today due to heavy snowfall. They have received around 50cm of snow today really adding to the snow cover. Coronet Peak did not open for skiing this weekend but a cold weather system sitting over the resort is bringing fresh snow and means they can make snow. They are expecting to open later this week but no date has been set. The remaining resorts are yet to open.
Chile The Chilean resorts are yet to open for summer skiing.
Argentina The Argentinean resorts are yet to open for summer skiing. Skiing is set to start in Cerro Catedral on the 17th June and at Las Lenas on the 16th June. At Las Lenas (150/380cm) they already have an amazing snow base. It looks set to be a great season in the Argentinean resorts. Monday 5 June 2006 Introduction The snow has given an enormous boost to conditions in Austria as there is powder across all of the resorts. The good Italian summer skiing continues on the Presena glacier with cloudy skies bringing the chance of snow this week. The glacier at Engleberg, Switzerland, is open for snowsport again and Zermatt is still skiing well with mostly sunny skies expected this week. The French resorts of Les Deux Alpes, Val d’Isere and Tignes are unfortunately closed in preparation for summer skiing. Summer skiing begins today on the Blackcomb glacier at Whistler, Canada, after the main winter ski area finally closed yesterday. There is rain expected at Timberline, USA, so the going could be pretty wet this afternoon. Mount Dobson, New Zealand, has hard packed snow conditions although they have had some fresh snow over the weekend. The other New Zealand resorts are yet to open. Most of the Australian resorts are hoping to open this weekend for winter sports. The Southern Hemisphere resorts in Argentina and Chile are yet to open for skiing.
Austria Snow continued to fall across Austria this weekend and is not forecast to stop until Thursday. Kaprun (339cm) and Hintertux (235cm) have seen the biggest increase in snow pack depth. Pitztal (190cm) has had an amazing change in conditions, at the end of last week they were still reporting wet snow but this has now transformed to powder giving excellent skiing across the glacier. Powder conditions can also be found at Kaunertal (130cm) and Stubai (230cm) following recent snowfalls. Molltal, Solden and Dachstein remain closed.
Switzerland Zermatt has good access to the glacier skiing with 10 lifts open today including the Snowpark lift. The temperatures have increased since last week so expect heavier snow in the afternoon. The cloud today should clear for bright sunny skies through this week. Engleberg is open again for snowsports after the little respite last week. The Titlis glacier has 340cm of snow for good skiing and boarding on the Ice Flyer slope and in the Terrain Park. Les Diablerets have made the decision not to open for downhill skiing on the glacier this summer. Only cross country skiing will be available. Saas Fee is not yet open for summer skiing.
Italy The Presena glacier (280/330cm) has mild temperatures and cloudy skies today. There is very good snow depth for great early summer skiing and boarding. Val Senales is closed for skiing at the moment. The skiing is also currently unavailable at Cervinia although they are planning to open for summer skiing on 24th June.
North America The winter ski season at Whistler has finally ended but the good news is that summer skiing opens today on the Blackcomb Glacier (162cm) at Whistler. Conditions on the glacier are soft due to the warm temperatures and lack of fresh snow. There is still plenty of snow on the glacier at Timberline in the States although the rain expected today would make this heavy going later on.
Australia The Australian resorts are yet to open for summer skiing. Falls Creek, Mount Buller, Mount Hotham, Selwyn Snowfields and Thredbo all hope to open this Saturday while Perisher Blue has its first day on Friday.
New Zealand Mount Dobson (30/60cm) had some fresh snow over the weekend but this has not really softened up the snow conditions. The rest of the resorts are still closed although Coronet Peak and Mount Hutt are the next resorts scheduled to open on 10th June.
Chile The Chilean resorts are yet to open for summer skiing.
Argentina The Argentinean resorts are yet to open for summer skiing. Tuesday 30 May 2006 Introduction There is excellent news for Austrian skiing as snow is forecast everyday this week. It is another beautiful day on the Presena glacier in Italy with mostly sunny skies and firm snow for some excellent early summer skiing. The Titlis glacier at Engleberg, Switzerland, is closed for snowsports today but Zermatt is still open with good skiing on the packed snow cover. The French resorts of Les Deux Alpes and Tignes are unfortunately closed in preparation for summer skiing. There are spring conditions across Whistler today so expect some soft snow this afternoon. The rain at Timberline in the States turned to snow over the start of the weekend adding a good amount of fresh cover to the ski area. Mount Dobson, New Zealand, opened this weekend for some good skiing and boarding on the packed snow cover. The other New Zealand resorts are yet to open. The Southern Hemisphere resorts in Argentina, Chile, and Australia are also yet to open for skiing.
Austria Snow is forecast across Austria this week which will give a boost to the glacier skiing. The best conditions can be found in Kaprun (298cm) where they are reporting powder conditions across the glacier following 10cm of fresh snow this morning. At Hintertux (210cm) it is also snowing today and they have had 2cm already this morning. The last snow at Kaunertal (130cm) was 5cm yesterday but they are expecting further snowfalls today. It is hoped that the snow forecast for Pitztal (190cm) will improve the conditions as it is predominantly slushy there at the moment. Molltal, Solden and Dachstein remain closed.
France The glacier at Tignes is now closed for skiing but it is scheduled to open for summer skiing from 17th June. Les Deux Alpes is also closed but will open for summer skiing from 17th June. Alpe d’Huez has taken the decision not to open for summer skiing this year and possibly not for the next few seasons, due to melting of the Sarenne glacier.
Switzerland Zermatt has good skiing on the packed and groomed snow cover of the glacier. The temperature is remaining pretty low and there is a chance of some snowfall tomorrow. Skiing at Engleberg is not possible today as the glacier is temporarily closed for snowsports. Les Diablerets and Saas Fee are not yet open for summer skiing.
Italy It is another fantastic sunny day with only light cloud cover hanging around over the Presena glacier (280/330cm). The snow cover is pretty packed this morning thanks to the low temperatures maintaining the snow pack. Val Senales is closed for skiing at the moment. The skiing is also currently unavailable at Cervinia although they are planning to open for summer skiing on 24th June.
North America A slight fall in temperature at Whistler (70/187cm) has improved the snow pack conditions. They are now reporting spring conditions across the resort rather than wet snow cover. The runs of the day are Saddle and Little Red. There has been a good amount of fresh snow fall at Timberline in the States over the past 5 days really boosting the skiing. This is a fantastic turnaround as the conditions were quite wet around Thursday of last week. The week ahead looks good especially as the temperature is remaining pretty cool helping to preserve the snow.
Australia The Australian resorts are yet to open for summer skiing.
New Zealand Mount Dobson was the first resort to open this weekend for some fast riding on the packed snow cover. There is 60cm of snow on the upper slopes and 30cm on the lower slopes for great early season riding under fine skies. The rest of the resorts are still closed although Coronet Peak and Mount Hutt are the next resorts scheduled to open on 10th June.
Chile The Chilean resorts are yet to open for summer skiing.
Argentina The Argentinean resorts are yet to open for summer skiing. Monday 22 May 2006 Introduction The temperature has dropped slightly over the Austrian glacier resorts although the fine skies today could be replaced by cloudy skies bringing a mixture of rain and snow this week. There is some great skiing in Italy on the Presena glacier with sunny spells adding to the great snow cover. The Swiss skiing at Engleberg is holding up well with the temperature and freezing level both dropping. Zermatt is a little wetter and this is affecting the snow conditions making it a little heavy. The French resorts of Les Deux Alpes and Tignes are currently closed in preparation for summer skiing. The week ahead looks like a wet one at the Canadian resort of Whistler. Fingers crossed that the weather changes to a more positive note by Thursdays report. In the States Timberline is still skiing well thanks to a drop in temperature. The Southern Hemisphere resorts in Argentina, Chile, Australia and New Zealand are all yet to open for summer skiing.
Austria There is plenty of skiing on offer at the Hintertux glacier (250cm) with 42km of pisted runs under fine sunny skies today. Cloud is expected to move in with the possibility of rain and some snow falling over the next couple of days. Kaprun (306cm) has the same weather expected but this does not detract from the great skiing there today. There is around 175cm of snow at the Alpincenter and all of the lifts are open for glacier skiing. The Stubai glacier (230cm) is also expecting a mixture of wet and snowy weather after the drier skies today supporting the great spring glacier skiing. Kaunertal (130cm) has less snow but they do have the added bonus of snow, not rain, predicted this week. Pitztal (195cm) has similar weather expected which would add a nice fresh topping to the great spring conditions. Molltal is now closed for maintenance until the 15th June and Solden and Dachstein remain closed.
Switzerland The temperature and the freezing level have dropped slightly on the Titlis glacier (340cm) at Engleberg. This means that better snow conditions than last week can be expected if you are heading to the glacier today. The weather will be a mixture of sun and cloud this week with some rain at times. The skiers on the Zermatt glacier (190cm) may receive some rain today which will only make the already wet snow cover even heavier. This week will see changeable weather bringing rain, cloud and sunny spells. Les Diablerets and Saas Fee are not yet open for summer skiing.
Italy Good skiing on the Presena glacier (280/330cm) with sun trying to break through the cloud cover. The higher areas are more affected by this cloud. The mild temperatures at Presena are not affecting the snow cover as much as may be expected. Val Senales is closed for skiing at the moment. The skiing is also currently unavailable at Cervinia although they are planning to open for summer skiing on 24th June.
North America The temperature has dropped a little at Whistler helping to preserve the snow conditions. The bad news is that the cloud cover is predicted to bring rain for most of this week which could seriously affect the snow cover. At Timberline (90/300cm) in the States the Magic Mile and Palmer lifts are open again today. Otto's Terrain Park is open for action between 9am and 2.30pm. The temperature has dropped which is good news as it is helping to maintain the snow cover.
Australia The Australian resorts are yet to open for summer skiing.
New Zealand The New Zealand resorts are yet to open for summer skiing.
Chile The Chilean resorts are yet to open for summer skiing.
Argentina The Argentinean resorts are yet to open for summer skiing.

Monday 15 May 2006Introduction Spring snow conditions can be found throughout Austria with heavier slush in the afternoon. More fine weather for Italian snowsports in the Presena glacier today with mostly sunny skies. There is similar beautiful spring weather providing great views and good spring skiing on the Swiss glaciers. The French glacier skiing at Les Deux Alpes and Tignes is currently closed in preparation for summer skiing. Whistler, Canada, has spring conditions across the resort and Timberline in the States is warming up thanks to the beautiful sunny weather making conditions a little heavier than last week. The Southern Hemisphere resorts in Argentina, Chile, Australia and New Zealand are all yet to open for summer skiing.
Austria Great skiing can still be found on the glaciers of Austria. Some new snow would be welcome at Hintertux (0/250cm) but unfortunately there is not any forecast for this week. The best snow depths can be found at Kaprun (0/326cm) where they are reporting excellent conditions across the glacier. At Kaunertal (0/180cm), Molltal (0/290cm), Pitztal (0/240cm) and Stubai (0/280cm) they all have plenty of spring skiing on offer. Solden is now closed until the 24th June for maintenance and the Dachstein Glacier is not open yet for summer skiing.
Switzerland The temperature still has not risen much over the Titlis glacier (340cm) meaning that the Engleberg skiing is still really good with packed snow getting softer into the afternoon. It is a little warmer at Zermatt (220cm) although this is not particularly affecting the snow cover. There is still great spring skiing on the glacier. Les Diablerets and Saas Fee are not yet open for summer skiing.
Italy There’s a beautiful sunny sky over the Presena glacier today with some clouds moving over throughout the day. This is the trend for most of this week with a chance of some light rain later tomorrow. Val Senales is closed for skiing at the moment. The skiing is also currently unavailable at Cervinia although they are planning to open for summer skiing on 24th June.
North America There is lots of skiing to be enjoyed in Whistler (110/250cm). Spring conditions can be found throughout the area and the runs of the day are Harmony piste and Fisheye. The temperature has risen over Timberline in the states reducing the snow pack and making conditions a little heavier. However there is still a good amount of snow cover with over 2 metres of snow on the glacier. Timberline has Otto’s terrain park and Conway’s half pipe open for anyone wanting freestyle action.
Australia The Australian resorts are yet to open for summer skiing.
New Zealand The New Zealand resorts are yet to open for summer skiing.
Chile The Chilean resorts are yet to open for summer skiing.
Argentina The Argentinean resorts are yet to open for summer skiing.
