Wood is quite cheap which is most likely why it is most popular, plus its the 'norm' and an accepted material as standard. Also its quite readily available and bonds well - laying up snowboards isn't too hard and can be done on the mass scale quite quickly.
I don't personally know enough about Makrolon to comment on whether or not its a long term perspective replacement for wood or what processing it requires to form it into the snowboard shape, could be a costly process? Sales pitch aside I am sure it does perform just as well as any other board out there - if it didn't they wouldn't be in business. |

| This comes without a wood core and appears to work. All modern snowboards have a wood core. If this clear board works, why bother going to the expense and time of researching materials for the wood cores on traditional boards? Also surely the manufacturing is more expensive to ge the different materials to bond together. |

My paper for 'Alternative approach to marketing in the snowsports industry' sadly only got accepted subject to major alterations (which I could not be arsed to do to be honest as it was a crappy conference) I am however giving a lecture on something similar at Shrivenham on the 14th of may for one of my thesis commits lecturers 
I must say though does look like an interesting product and it definately broadens the scope on whats possible. |

| The Makboard is an all mountain carving machine that's worth the $300 and more for the surflike feel that is unlike any other board. The flex = the fun. The material is Makrolon- same material used in ballistic glazing on the Humvee and canopy glazing on the F16 fighter- tough stuff. The board weigh's approximately 9 pounds and can ship anywhere it is needed-  |

The material is pretty stiff its what they use in windscreens apparently. My concern is that it would be heavy as it seems that its a solid piece. But I think the whole concept is pretty cool and if i can get hold of one I will  |

| it'll cost peanuts to make but they'll have factored in the mould costs and probably R&D into that for starters, plus profit and novelty value and arrived at $300 |

That would be a "marketing" patent then; very common as you obviously know.
Back in the day there were moulded plastic snowboards, some made by a British company if I remember rightly. I never saw one of those in the flesh, but I expect they only resembled real snowboards in the way they looked from a distance.
It this new thing is somehow moulded then you can see why they may want channels. I wasn't sure what it was made out of - I'd be impressed if it was in fact stiff enough to work well irrespective of the mould shape.
I'm a skeptic, but if they're selling it on the "transparent" aspect, then perhaps the ride isn't quite as good as it may be. Well if it does work, there should be plenty about soon... |

I would say they can keep the cost at $300 by only offering it on one variety and size. The tooling and getting snowboard parts made into all the different shapes and sizes is what costs the most money. The raw materials on the whole are reatively cheap.
The way it channels snow looks really interesting - says its patented but can't find anything on the patent search I just did to try and find a bit more info about it. 
I'll see if my uni will let me buy one for research purposes and bring it along to MK sometime it'd be too big for me to ride  does look pretty awesome. |
