| Just bought an ATC2k and, while first tests seem ok, still need to test it at the snowdome and then in the mountains. Does look ok though. Looking forward to a bit more freedom when riding with a camera as i've ridden with a lens hooked up to a hard disk recorder before and found it restricting in both terms of being wired up all over the place and i was also very concious that i had 300 squids worth of kit in my pocket waiting for me to land on it! |

my brother has the tony hawk camera and we just had it awa with us last week to arinsal !!
it's not going to win any awards with it's flashy awesome film capturing skills, but, the quality isn't "too" bad for watching on a computer, i'd say for a £50 helmet cam it's pretty good !! quality is much the same as videos from a mobile !
i have sample clips if anyone want's them mailed or i can host them,
oh and it can take up to a 2gb card, which is a couple of hours filmage easy !
the laser thing helps you figure out where the camera is pointing. |

The tony hawks camera in the uk is £100!!!! Rip off Britain or what! You can get it for $45 in the USA currently.
It takes SD memory so can be upgraded. Quality is 15 fps and 320 X 240
A better alternative is the Oregon Scientific version. ATC-1000

The ATC-1000 also takes SD and can support up to 1 gb. Quality is 640X480 at 15fps 320X240 at 20fps 160X120 at 25fps USB 1 only!!

To set up the head on to chase shot, go ahead of your mates, stop and film them coming towards you. As they get close start moving downhill but still facing them, and as they go past, turn to follow them and then try and catch up. Sometimes looks better if you stay where you are, looking straight uphill and they fly past, especially if the camera is really low to the ground. The key thing is to mix the shots up, it's really boring just watching from one angle the whole time.
I always used a velcro mount on the top of my helmet. You might need to angle it slightly to face directly forwards, depending on your stance and riding position but if you do that, it will be off centre when you ride switch. Could be a good idea to have a little sight taped to the brim of the helmet so you can see exactly where the cam is pointing. |

That sounds excellent, I will definetly do the mini interviews. I can edit the video and compare the mini-interviews they have in 91words for snow. That would make a hilarious edit!
Imagine:
Jeremy Jones before heading down a knarly Alaskan Mountain
vs
Mate learning falling leaf at the top of a small bump
:p
Then chase to towards pan shot sounds good. I guess naturally you would be looking in that direction when you go past them and want to turn around and ride switch.
A shoulder mount like Predator would be ideal... |

The 4.3mm lens that came with mine is a wide enough angle that you don't need to worry too much about aiming, and your body acts as a natural damper so the shot is fairly steady. Try to move your eyes rather than your head when looking around, and if you move your head, try to do it slowly, otherwise you will make your viewers sick. You can always edit those bits out of the final version though.
I usually follow people from behind, because side on distracts you from your riding too much. As I said, the angle is wide enough that if you just ride down about 10m behind them, they will be in shot pretty much all the time.
It's also really easy to go on ahead, turn round and film them coming towards you. You don't need to stop and delve into your bag like you would with a full size cam, and if you time it right you can go nice and smoothly from a head on shot into a chase shot.
I didn't plan any of my shots, but then I just use it to capture a few memories of the really interesting or hairy runs. I haven't got time to learn to edit properly but I have seen a really good amateur vid and that includes loads of background shots, like slow pans of snow covered trees, falling snow, water dripping off icicles and stuff. Good to get a few mini interviews with the riders too, especially at the top of something they're scared of!
I really want to try attaching the cam to a long aerial mounted on my backpack for the computer game angle! Not sure how that would stand up to a crash though!! |

Any tips on how to film using the head cam?
Should you film infront of the object/target? How do you keep the shot steady if using a headband? and what is the best way to film someone following down the slope - sideways on or behind - does anyone plan them? |

It's fine when I'm riding, I don't really notice it. The irritation comes in getting the pack on and off with all the wires connecting it to the lid. You also need to do a lot of battery recharging every night.
I don't use it every day now. I've got about 5 tapes from the season before last that I haven't even watched yet. It's really only worth doing if you're filming a kicker (in which case you could do it with just the camcorder) or doing a backcountry day or heli drop or something else special.
On the plus side, even if you don't use it to film while you are riding, it's much less hassle to film your mates. You don't need to sit down, get the pack off, etc, etc. Just stop and turn round.
I would say have a look at the Archos thing with the mini camera they supply - that has a remote on it but check the camera spec, especially the resolution. The archos 500 is quite small, so you could probably get a Peli case (try www.tvcases.co.uk) to fit it that would be OK in your jacket.
Or if you already have a camcorder with LANC remote socket and AV-IN you could borrow mine!

Nice set up there Paul. I've been thinking about doing something similar so that I can edit my footage to music. Did you ever have moment when out riding & just wished you didn''t have the kit on, wires etc? I know the end result must be amazing but I'm concerned that I'd spend the money & then not utilise the equipment fully. Actually saying that I plan to go either cat or heli boarding next season so I'd def want it for that. Yeah - a pain without a remote.
So you don't want to switch to the Archos because you'd have to keep the camera in your jacket - which is what I was thinking of doing my on reflection I guess that's they fast way to a broken camera.
Man I watched that clip of you wiping out whilst trying to film your board. The sound you made once you'd come to a stop reminded me of some edge catches.
I'll have a look at the other clip at work tomorrow - faster connection. |

I'll post this link again as there is a slight chance that someone hasn't seen it before!
My helmet cam rig
I'm thinking about replacing the mini-DV camcorder with an Archos 500 type thing though. Only downside to that is the lack of a remote control, unless I also buy Archos's dedicated mini-camera. That means keeping the recorder in my jacket rather than safe in my pack. |
