Thursday 2 September 2004
Introduction
Conditions throughout Europe remain reasonable and many glaciers, particularly those in Switzerland, are still open to provide some good late summer skiing. However, a lack of any significant recent snowfall, as well as sunny skies and warm temperatures, means that snow bases are deteriorating quickly.
In the Southern Hemisphere there is a mixed bag of ski and board conditions… New Zealand is revelling in yet another huge dumping of snow, and Australian resorts are holding onto their well-established snow bases thanks to cold temperatures. Over in South America, Argentinean resorts are skiing well after recent snow and pistes remain hard packed in Chile, but the good news is that new snow is forecast at the weekend.
Austria
There is still some decent skiing and boarding in Austria, and although last weeks snow did help conditions, the warm temperatures and sunny skies this week are having a damaging effect on snow bases. There are still some good skiing conditions on the Kaprun Glacier (0/110cms) where 7 lifts are open today. Hintertux (0/92cms) has decent skiing at the summit, with packed snow softening throughout the day.
France
The Glacier at Tignes (0/30cms) remains open, with 6 lifts operating to offer some good skiing in beautiful sunshine. Get out early to get the best of the conditions, as the snow softens quickly in the warm late summer temperatures. All other French resorts are currently closed.
Switzerland
There is still some good skiing and boarding on the glaciers of the Swiss resorts. Les Diablerets (0/280cms) in particular, is offering great piste conditions and beautiful sunny skies. Saas Fee (0/130cms) and Zermatt (0/180cms) have also got a solid snow base at upper levels, and approximately a third of lifts are operating.
Italy
Cervinia (0/90cms) and Val Senales (0/80cms) remain open at present, although snow conditions are worsening due to a lack of any recent snow. Only three lifts are operating in both resorts, meaning limited opportunities for skiers and boarders. However, the runs that are open have some good snow and the beautiful sunny weather is very inviting.
North America
Due to high winds, lift operations at Timberline are currently on stand by, although some may open later on today.
Australia
Great skiing and boarding throughout the Australian resorts, with some areas seeing some slight snowfall above 1500m today to freshen up their already fantastic bases. Cold temperatures in many resorts overnight, particularly Perisher Blue (20/200cms), are keeping the snow hard packed in the morning with sunshine softening the pistes throughout the day. Mount Buller (148/193cms) is offering some great skiing and riding, especially on the upper pistes. Falls Creek (30/200cms) is similarly looking fantastic with a beautiful sunny day today and cold temperatures.
New Zealand
An abundance of new snow has been falling throughout New Zealand overnight and today, and resorts such as The Remarkables (150/190cms) have seen 25cms of new snow. Snow conditions are fantastic throughout the country as the snow just keeps on falling. Powder hounds will be in heaven over the next few days… However, high winds have also affected many resorts, namely rainbow (120/180cms) and Mount Dobson (25/80cms), where all lifts are closed due to gale force winds. Once the winds die down, expect to experience some awesome skiing and riding.
Chile
Snow conditions are holding up well in Chile, considering they have not seen much recent snow for a while. However, there’s some great skiing on the upper slopes of La Parva (32/68cms) where most lifts are open, and Valle Nevado (15/65cms) is still offering good skiing and riding. Snow is forecast this weekend in many Chilean resorts, which should improve general snow conditions, and perhaps open some more lifts in some of the more affected resorts.
Argentina
Thanks to recent snowfall on the 31st August, snow conditions in Argentinean ski resorts remain very good. The best of the skiing and riding can be found in Chapelco (166/400cms) where there is great skiing on the upper slopes. The other resorts of Cerro Catedral (90/140cms) and Las Lenas (20/50cms) are also skiing well, although some areas are very hard packed, especially early morning.

Monday 6 September 2004 Introduction Typical summer ski conditions remain throughout Europe at present, with strong sunshine softening the snow by midday. Get out early for the best skiing and riding conditions.
There has been masses of snow falling throughout the Southern Hemisphere over the weekend and through to today. This means pretty fantastic conditions across New Zealand, Australia, and much improved skiing and boarding in Chile and Argentina.
Austria Sunny skies and warm temperatures prevail throughout the Austrian resorts. Snow softens quickly in these conditions, meaning deteriorating snow bases. The best conditions can be found in Kaprun (0/104cms) and Solden (0/130cms) where there is still some good skiing on the upper slopes. However, there is limited skiing on the Moltal glacier (0/20cms) and the Stubai glacier (0/30cms) with only 3 and 4 lifts operating respectively.
France Unfortunately it appears that all French resorts are closed at present. However, Tignes is only temporarily closed today, with the expected opening of the glacier cable car later on. Keep an eye on Tignes’ homepage for further information.
Switzerland Saas Fee (0/130cms) and Zermatt (0/180cms) are still offering some decent skiing and riding on the glaciers. Sunny skies and warm temperatures mean typical summer skiing conditions.
Italy Italy is experiencing similar snow conditions to the rest of Europe, with hot temperatures and sunny skies softening the snow throughout the day. Val Senales (0/80cms) has three lifts open on the glacier, and Cervinia (0/80cms) has some good skiing at the summit.
North America Timberline (0/450cms) currently has three lifts open, offering a lovely day skiing under hot and sunny skies. Get out early to experience the best of the conditions.
Australia Recent snow has again made for some fantastic conditions across the Australian resorts, especially at Perisher Blue where 20cm of new snow dumped overnight. Snow also fell at Thredbo (25/191cms) and Selwyn Snowfields (30/125cms) yesterday, providing some untracked powder skiing and riding possibilities today. Elsewhere, the resorts of Mount Buller (148/196cms) and Falls Creek (30/179cms) are skiing and boarding very well after snow on Saturday.
New Zealand More good news for those heading off to enjoy some Southern Hemisphere snow; there’s buckets of it! Snow fell at all New Zealand resorts at some point this weekend, providing fantastic skiing and riding after high winds forced some lift closures last week. After so much snow it’s hard to pin point the best areas; however, the most recent snow fell in The Kaikoura’s: Mt Lyford (130/150cms) and Mount Ruapehu: Whakapapa (250/250cms) and Turoa (300/300cms) where the powder riding is awesome!
Chile Snow conditions are much improved throughout Chile, with all resorts receiving a much needed heavy dumping of snow over the weekend and through to today. Valle Nevado (15/65cms) is revelling in 10cms of fresh powder and cold temperatures, and the similar conditions apply for La Parva (32/70cms) and and Chape Verde (0/40cms) particularly.
Argentina New snow falling in Las Lenas (10/35cms) and Chapelco (166/400cms) is improving snow cover and providing some good skiing today, although the underneath base is still hard and fast in the cold temperatures. This new snow should continue for the next couple of days. Cerro Catedral (71/305cms) is also skiing well thanks to recent snow.

Thursday 9 September 2004 Introduction A few more resorts have now temporarily closed in Europe, but those that remain open are still offering some decent skiing and boarding with typical summer ski conditions. The weather remains very warm and sunny, although a shift in the weather pattern is forecast this weekend.
New Zealand still has the best skiing and riding conditions throughout the Southern Hemisphere, while Australia suffers in the rain and wind. Chile and Argentina are offering great snow and lovely skiing due to recent snow and cold temperatures.
Austria Typical summer conditions remain in Austria with sunny skies and warm temperatures. Snow softens by the afternoon so catch the first lift to make the most of the snow. The best conditions can be found on the Kaprun glacier (0/99cms) and at Hintertux (0/80cms).
France All resorts in France are temporarily closed.
Switzerland Zermatt (0/180cms) and Saas Fee (0/130cms) are still offering decent skiing on their glaciers, and Les Diablerets ()/280cms) still has plenty of snow on the summit, although only 1 lift is operating.
Italy Val Senales (0/80cms) remains open with limited skiing and boarding. 3 lifts are open on the glacier, but the snow softens extremely quickly. All other Italian resorts are temporarily closed.
North America All resorts in North America are now closed.
Australia After recent excellent conditions throughout the Australian resorts, things have taken an unfortunate turn for the worse. Rain is falling in most resorts creating heavy and wet conditions on the slopes. At Perisher Blue (20/200cms) rain has affected some runs, but you can seek protection and some good skiing and boarding on the tree lined runs. Over at Mouth Hotham (30/169cms) the best of the conditions can be found on the upper slopes, as the problematic rain is falling as snow above 1600m. Ben Lomond (12/50cms) in Tasmania is fairing better today with clear skies and sunny spells.
New Zealand Wonderful ski and board conditions across New Zealand today with mainly blue skies and heaps of the white stuff. The best conditions can still be found at Turoa (300/300cms) where there is some awesome skiing and riding to be had. Elsewhere, Cardrona (100/210cms) has a great snow base and lovely conditions, and Porter Heights (160/180cms) is reporting a ‘perfect’ ski day. However, unfortunately Mount Dobson is closed today due to deteriorating weather conditions, and this looks set to trouble many other resorts over the weekends with high winds and gales forecast – take care and have fun.
Chile There’s some great conditions in Chile currently, with snow on the 7th September having improved many pistes. In particular, Valle Nevado (15/82cms) is offering lovely skiing and boarding under beautiful blue skies today. Elsewhere La Parva (32/55cms) has good snow on the upper slopes and Antillaca (0/60cms) is enjoying the sunshine with most lifts open.
Argentina Some very good skiing and boarding available in Argentinean resorts at present. Chalpelco (253/655cms) has had an amazing amount of snow in the last few days, creating a magnificent snow base of 655cms at the summit. Cerro Catedral (71/130cms) is similarly offering some great snow conditions in the sunshine, although Las Lenas (10/36cms) could do with more of a solid snow base, especially at lower levels.

Monday 13 September 2004 Introduction Some decent skiing and boarding remains throughout European resorts, and the best of the conditions can be found in Austria where there was some fresh snow over the weekend. Temperatures are still rather mild and there is a chance of more precipitation in the next few days.
Australia is enjoying a fantastic season and the wealth of fresh snow that fell at the weekend and overnight is securing some great spring skiing. New Zealand is also offering great skiing and riding, with spring conditions coming into fruition. In South America, temperatures are slowly increasing, although there is still some great conditions to be found on the upper slopes.
Austria The new snow that fell yesterday has improved the snow bases in some of the Austrian resorts, namely Hintertux (0/75cms), which received 15cms of new snow over the weekend. Other areas that received new snow include the Moltal Glacier (0/20cms) and Kaunertal (0/15cms) which has now reopened, with one lift operating on the glacier.
FranceAll resorts in France are temporarily closed.
Switzerland Les Diablerets (0/280cms) is still offering the best conditions in Switzerland with a great snow base on the glacier and three lifts operating. Saas Fee (0/130cms) and Zermatt (0/180cms) are still operating with limited services.
Italy Val Senales is now the only operating Italian resort. There is some good skiing and boarding to be found on the glacier, although only three lifts are currently open.
North America All resorts in North America are currently closed.
Australia Australian resorts are offering fantastic conditions at present due to an abundance of snow falling in all resorts over the weekend. Every ski area awoke to fresh powder this morning, so get out there and enjoy it while it lasts. Perisher Blue (160/200cms) has great snow cover over the whole mountain, and Falls Creek (175/185cms) is simlilarly enjoying the new snow. Over in Tazmania, Ben Lomond (30/50cms) has also apreciated fresh snow fall and the pistes remain in good shape. On the down side, some resorts, namely Mount Hotham (160/195cms) will see rain showers throughout the day, which may damage the lower slopes.
New Zealand Snow conditions remain great throughout New Zealand, although there has been no significant snowfall for over a week. Cold temperatures are keeping the snow well, and the bases already accumulated mean there’s no shortage of the white stuff. High winds have closed Turoa (300/300cms) and Rainbow today (90/150cms), whilst bad weather and high winds again have closed many lifts at Mount Hutt (130/130cms) and Whakapapa (240/240cms). Elsewhere skiing and riding remains fantastic with a mixture of blue skies and cloud, and Cardrona (70/210cms) in particular has some awesome conditions all over the mountain.
Chile The Chilean resorts are still offering some decent skiing and riding, and new snow today in Antillanca (0/60cms) is improving the upper pistes, although the precipitation may turn to rain by the afternoon. Temperatures are warming throughout the country, meaning deteriorating conditions in many resorts as the day progresses and the snow softens. Portillo (45/70cms) and Valle Nevado (15/82cms) are the pick of the bunch with solid snow bases and good conditions on the upper slopes.
Argentina Skiing and boarding remains good in the Argentinean resorts. Las Lenas (40/85cms) has good snow cover on the upper slopes and all lifts are open. In Cerro Catedral (71/130cms) and Chapelco (253/555cms), there are some great skiing and boarding conditions, although rain forecast today may damage some of the lower slopes.

Thursday 16 September 2004 Introduction New snow has fallen throughout Austria and Italy, providing better piste conditions on the glaciers for skiers and boarders to enjoy. Switzerland has unfortunately not experienced the recent dump, although temperatures have fallen meaning the snow is keeping in the better shape. Lift operations, however, still remain pretty minimal throughout Europe.
Australia and New Zealand have received new snow in the last 24hrs throughout their ski resorts. This is providing some great skiing and boarding conditions for the time of year, although high winds are affecting some lift operations. Chile and Argentina are providing decent skiing and boarding, and high winds (some gale force) and snow are forecast for the forthcoming weekend.
AustriaThe first signs of the winter season are showing in Austria, where lots of new snow is falling throughout all resorts. Hintertux (0/90cms) has seen a whopping 25cms of new snow today, and Kaprun (2/100cms) is reporting a very respectable 10cms of fresh snow. All in all it’s looking good for Austrian resorts, although many glaciers still have limited lifts operations.
France All resorts in France are temporarily closed.
Switzerland Unfortunately Switzerland has not yet seen the new snow that has fallen in Austria and Italy, so conditions remain typical of the time of year with a few lifts open on the glaciers. The best conditions can be found at Les Diablerets (0/280cms) which has a good and solid snow base. On the other hand, temperatures are much cooler than last week, allowing the snow to keep better throughout the day.
ItalyVel Senales (0/80cms) remains open in Italy. A lovely 15cms of new snow has fallen as the winter season very slowing begins to unfold. All other Italian resorts are temporarily closed.
North America All resorts in North America are currently closed.
AustraliaConditions remain great throughout Australian resorts for the time of year. New snow fell overnight in nearly all resorts to freshen up the slopes nicely. There’s some fantastic skiing and boarding at Mount Buller (119/194cms) where 22/25 lifts are operating. Persisher Blue (160/200cms) has also got a great snow base. Elsewhere, the slopes of Selwyn Snowfields (40/80cms) are suffering slightly with rain affected slopes, as it was just not quite cold enough for it to snow.
New Zealand More new snow is falling in most resorts today, but in many places it is accompanied with hind winds, forcing some resorts to temporarily close. Those that are open are offering great snow conditions with limited visibility, these include Porter Heights (120/140cms) and Whakapapa (255/255cms). Other resorts such as The Remarkables (150/190cms) and Mount Hutt (130/130cms) are offering good skiing and boarding on wind affected snow. All in all, lots of snow for this time of year.
Chile There’s still reasonable skiing and boarding to be found in Chilean resorts. La Parva (32/55cms) has one of the best snow bases, and Valle Nevado (15/82cms) still has some good skiing and boarding available on the upper slopes. Chances of snow and high winds are forecast for some resorts at the weekend.
Argentina All resorts in Argentina still have a good and solid snow base, providing good skiing despite no significant snowfall for over a week. The upper slopes are skiing particularly well at Chapelco (253/555cms) and Cerro Catedral (15/230cms), although the lower slopes and runs to resort are now beginning to suffer. The forecast for the weekend is snow, rain, and gale force winds, so except difficult conditions and many lift closures.

Monday 20 September 2004 Introduction As we head towards winter in the Northern Hemisphere, there has been some snowfall on the glaciers in Austria, Italy and Switzerland. Conditions generally remain hard packed but still perfect for summer riding.
In the Southern Hemisphere, there are still some amazing conditions in New Zealand after fresh snow over the weekend. Typical spring snow conditions remain in most of the Australian resorts and there is a similar story in Chile and Argentina.
Austria There are some good skiing and riding conditions in Hintertux (75cm) and Kaprun (94cm) after snow last week. Conditions are hard packed in Kaunertal (25cm) where there are limited lifts open and Molltal Glacier (20cm) is only offering skiing from two lifts. Overcast skies dominate.
France There is currently no summer skiing available in France.
Switzerland Les Diablerets (280cm) is open at present with four lifts and sunny skies. Saas Fee (92cm) has some of the best conditions in Switzerland at present after some new snow last week and ten installations are open. The Klein Matterhorn is also open for skiing and riding in Zermatt (180cm).
Italy Four lifts are open in Val Senales (80cm), and after snow last week and sunshine at present, conditions are very good.
North America Timberline (450cm) has seen new snow and the lifts are now open for skiing and riding.
Australia Most resorts in Australia are offering typical spring skiing with hard packed snow in the mornings, softening into the afternoons. In New South Wales, Thredbo (20/192cm) has some great conditions with piles of snow in time for the school holidays and in Perisher Blue (160/200cm) there are typical spring snow conditions. In Victoria, there are good snow conditions in Mount Buller (114/188cm) and Mount Hotham (150/177cm).
New Zealand The amazing winter enjoyed in New Zealand continues. On the North Island, there was heavy snowfall in both Turoa (305/325cm) and Whakapapa (260/280cm) and with sunshine at present conditions are excellent. On the South Island, there has been snow in Coronet Peak (85/115cm) and The Remarkables (150/190cm) and with sunshine in Mount Hutt (125/125cm), skiing in upper areas remains good.
Chile The weather has been excellent in Termas de Chillan (0/60cm) and skiing is available on upper slopes. Sun is also on the menu in La Parva (32/55cm) and Portillo (45/70cm) where packed pistes dominate.
Argentina All resorts are offering hard packed conditions at present after no new significant snow for a while. There is soft snow on lower slopes in Las Lenas (20/70cm) and in Cerro Catedral (15/160cm), the pistes are fast and hard packed.

Sorry to rain on your parade Stuart, but you might want to reconsider your sources.
Just spent the weekend riding pow in Chapelco, Argentina.
Saturday the upper mountain was closed due to visibility and high winds, but the lower mountain offered up knee deep pow in the trees. Some of the most picturesque and enjoyable tree skiing I´ve done.
And yesterday was a bluebird, mid-thigh powder day. Superb skiing off the T-bar to the right of the map. The dotted line far right - La Pala - had excellent snow, and the ´run´ back to the resort through the forest was breathtaking.
Chapelco map
Warmed up towards the end of the day. But more snow forecast for the end of the week. |

Its info that comes from the SCGB. Have noticed in the past where accuracy has been a bit off target. Mostly with areas outwith Europe as info is obtained from other sources rather than directly from people on the ground as is mostly the case with resorts in Europe. Glad your having a good time down there and its great that you can send us back accurate snow reports from your travels. Cheers Mike. |

DISCLAIMER - I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY AS TO THE ACCURACY OF THIS POST.
Thursday 23 September 2004 Introduction Skiing and riding in Europe is currently limited: in Austria, Hintertux and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier are open; in Switzerland the Les Diablerets glacier is open; and a few lifts are open in the Italian resort of Val Senales where the only sunny skiable terrain is to be found. France is not yet an option.
The season is winding down in Chile and Argentina, though there is still some good terrain accessible. Great snow can be found in New Zealand as fresh falls top up good coverage, though many resorts are currently closed due to poor weather. Rain threatens snow conditions in Australia, but sunshine and good spring snow can be found.
AustriaThere is some bad weather in Austria, which is affecting visibility. Skiing and riding is suspended on the Molltal Glacier (20cm) and in Solden (130cm), there is light snow and rain with three lifts open at present. In Kaprun (97cm) there is also new snow on the top of the glacier with four lifts open for skiing. Hintertux (75cm) has the largest area open for skiing and riding in Austria at present.
France There is currently no skiing available in France.
Switzerland Les Diablerets (280cm) has five lifts open with light snow falling on the glacier at present. Lift opening has been affected in Zermatt (180cm) due to windy/ snowy weather and skiing is still available in Saas Fee (92cm).
Italy There are three lifts open for skiing and riding in Val Senales (20cm) where the weather is sunny at present.
North America The lifts are temporarily suspended in Timberline (450cm), USA.
Australia No fresh snow in Australia since around September 15 but conditions remain generally good though wet in places. Highlights in New South Wales are Thredbo (4/192) and Perisher Blue (160/192) which has great coverage throughout the resort though snow is slick in some areas after recent rainfall. The weather is getting warmer in Selwyn, with snow softening and limited lifts open. In Victoria, sunshine and good spring snow in Falls Creek (151/160) create great skiing and riding conditions, and snow conditions remain good in Mount Buller (144/180) despite spatterings of rain.
New Zealand Fresh snow continues to fall in many areas, building on a good base to create some great skiing and riding conditions, particularly off-piste in Treble Cone (127/162). Porter Heights (120/140) is also looking good with all lifts open. Approximately a third of resorts are currently closed due to adverse weather: gale-force winds in Turoa (305/325) have shut lifts, and Mount Dobson (25/100) is experiencing a white-out and is also closed for the moment. All of Queenstown is currently withstanding the snow and all ski areas remain open with good fresh snow coverage.
Chile The season is drawing to a close in Chile, but several resorts are still open for skiing and riding. The season ends this weekend in Portillo (40/65cm), but this week there is typical spring snow conditions with a handful of lifts still in operation. In Valle Nevado (15/60cm) most of the lifts are still open and skiers are enjoying warm sunshine. There is a limited area open in El Colorado (10/30cm), again with spring conditions. Head high for the best conditions in Chillan (0/60cm).
Argentina The weather is excellent in Cerro Catedral (20/80cm) with skiing avaliable on a hard packed base. Spring conditions dominate in Las Lenas (20/71cm), which has eight lifts open at present. The weather is not as good in Chapelco (10/100cm), but there are still lifts open with skiing and riding on a packed base.

Monday 27 September 2004 Introduction Fresh snowfalls in Austria give it the edge over other European ski areas. In Switzerland, Les Diablerets leads the race with an abundance of snow and sunshine. Only Val Senales remains just about skiable in Italy. In North America, Timberline is open with great snow coverage.
In the southern hemisphere, New Zealand refuses to submit to the approach of spring, as fresh snow continues to fall in many areas generating some brilliant conditions. Spring snow conditions dominate in Australia, and in Chile, Valle Nevado continues to provide some good skiing and riding.
Austria Fresh snowfalls in Kaunertal (0/50) have widened the skiable terrain, and clear skies in Solden (0/130) make it an inviting option, with recent snowfall improving an already good coverage of spring snow. Conditions in Kaprun (13/122) are also quite reasonable, though skies are overcast. The Dachstein Glacier (0/20) and Pitztal (0/0) are both closed. Possibilities on the Molltall Glacier (0/20) are very limited, with cloud, wind and lack of snow stilting proceedings. The Stubai Glacier (0/50) fares slightly better after a recent scattering of snow though sunshine is expected to turn to cloud as the day ages.
France There is currently no skiing or riding in France. Tignes is set to re-open on October 2nd.
Switzerland There is a good amount of snow on upper slopes in Les Diablerets (0/280), and it is favoured by fair weather and low temperatures. Some skiing and riding can be found at altitude in Saas-Fee (0/88), with no snow on lower slopes. Skies are overcast in Zermatt (0/160) but there is plenty of accessible terrain.
Italy Four lifts are open under gloriously sunny skies in Val Senales (0/20), where snow is hard-packed. Everywhere else is currently closed.
North America There is lovely sunshine and plenty of snow accessible by three lifts now open in Timberline (0/450).
Australia There is firm snow, softening into the afternoons in Falls Creek (130/140cm) and in Mount Hotham (100/129cm) there is a similar story, so head to the groomed runs early in the day for the best conditions. There are a few patches showing through on lower runs in Perisher Blue (160/189cm) and Thredbo (4/190cm), but generally conditions remain good for this time of year.
New Zealand It doesn't look like the winter wants to end in New Zealand! There has been more snow in the Queenstown resorts with all lifts open in both Coronet Peak (80/115cm) and The Remarkables (150/190cm). The snow is still falling in Treble Cone (127/168cm) and Cardrona (70/210cm), accompanied by wind, but riding conditions remain excellent. There is poor visibility on the North Island resorts of Turoa (305/325cm) and Whakapapa (260/280cm) and due to high winds, there are wind blown conditions. There are excellent conditions in Porter Heights (110/120cm) following new snow and clear weather dominates at present.
Chile Many resorts are now closed in Chile, but Chapa Verde (0/40cm) has a sparse covering of snow with hard conditions in the mornings, softening as the day progresses. Valle Nevado (40/55cm) is still offering a good range of skiing and riding across the mountain, with fine weather at present.
Argentina There are typical spring snow conditions in Chapelco at present as the winter draws to a close. There is good visibility, but the resort has experienced some windy conditions.

Thursday 30 September 2004 IntroductionIn the Northern Hemisphere, fresh snow in Austria has enhanced the skiing and riding conditions in some areas. In Switzerland, Zermatt and Les Diablerets are particular highlights with a good amount of snow and fair weather. Snow is threatening to disappear from Italy as the base is down to a poor 20cm in Val Senales, and winter is being eagerly awaited in France.
Now for the Southern Hemisphere. The season is drawing to a close in New Zealand, but nobody has told the clouds: they are experiencing enviable snowfall at the moment, which is boosting an already good base. In Australia, top end-of-season snow conditions will be found in Thredbo and Perisher Blue. Summer is creeping in with more force in Chile and Argentina, though there are still good conditions to be found on upper slopes.
Austria Kaunertal (0/60) has benefited from 10cm of fresh snow over the past few days, and Kaprun (10/124) and is looking even better for the same reason. On the other end of the scale, Molltall Glacier (0/10) is closed due to lack of snow. Solden (0/50) and the Stubai Glacier (0/50) both have reasonable snow coverage and fair weather.
France The summer skiing and riding in France has now closed and resorts are awaiting the fall of winter before they can re-open.
Switzerland The weather is excellent across the Swiss resorts at present. All lifts on the glacier are open for skiing and riding in Zermatt (160cm) and in Saas-Fee (83cm) there is good skiing on hard packed slopes. Spring conditions dominate on the glacier in Les Diablerets (280cm) and on the Titlis glacier in Engelberg, two slopes should open this weekend, weather permitting.
Italy The only skiing and riding available in Italy at present is on the glacier in Val Senales (20cm). Two lifts are operating under sunny skies.
North America Timberline (450cm) is open with abundant snow and sunshine.
Australia Most ski areas in Australia are either closed or closing imminently. Mt Hotham (80/111), although hemmed in by fog, has a good coverage of spring snow. Thredbo (20/124) and Mount Buller (50/130) are still open though snow is worn in places.
New Zealand On the North Island, Turoa (305/325) and Whakapapa (260/290) have plenty of great terrain but strong winds. Turoa is particularly affected, with only one lift operating.
On the South Island, Mount Hutt (120/150) is looking superb after receiving 30cm of fresh snow in just 24 hours, though gale-force winds and correlated lift closures mean it can’t be fully enjoyed just yet. Coronet Peak (80/115) is also experiencing winter snow conditions though under gloriously sunny skies, and Cardrona (70/210) looks similarly inviting. In Porter Heights (110/120) the close of the resort for the season has irritatingly coincided with a wonderful 75cm of fresh snow. Conditions on the main trails at Treble Cone (127/168) have “never been in such great condition!” A number of other resorts, including Rainbow (100/150) and Mount Olympus (190/220), are closed.
Chile Most Chilean resorts are now closed as the Southern Hemisphere heads towards its summer. The two resorts which remain open are Termas de Chillan (15/100cm) and Valle Nevado (0/50cm). There are some good snow conditions in Chillan, particularly in upper areas and in Valle Nevado in sun is shining and spring conditions prevail.
Argentina In Argentina, Cerro Catedral (0/160) has spring snow conditions with good coverage, skiing and riding under overcast skies with the best terrain to be found above 1400m. Half of the lifts in Chapelco (0/60) are closed, with moderate winds gaining strength as you gain altitude. Las Lenas is now closed.

Monday 4 October 2004 Introduction In Europe, France is now a possibility as Tignes has opened quite a few lifts. There is a fair amount of good, skiable terrain to be found in Austria and Switzerland, and in Italy there are two resorts open.
In the Southern Hemisphere, New Zealand remains quite a stable bet if you avoid the high winds plaguing a number of areas forcing lift closures. The window of opportunity is narrowing daily in Australia as the summer looms. In South America, only one resort is still open in Chile, one step up from that there are two skiable areas in Argentina.
Austria Good snow conditions on the Hintertux (0/75) and Stubai (0/50) glaciers, and in more southerly Solden (0/50). Fresh snowfall and fair weather invites riders to Kaunertal (0/65). The deepest base is in warm Kaprun (2/117). Pitztal (5/35) is now open for skiing on soft snow beneath clear skies.
France Tignes (30cm) is open for skiing and riding. Seven lifts are open and most of the jumps in the snowpark are prepared. It is sunny but also very windy so it would be advisable to take an extra layer!
Switzerland There is skiing and riding on the Titlis glacier in Engelberg (20cm). Limited terrain is open but the sunny weather would make a morning skiing enjoyable. Saas Fee (80cm) has five runs open and the hard pistes mean there is plenty of opportunity for some fast skiing or boarding. There is a similar story in Zermatt (160cm) where there are four runs open and the Gravity Park is open with beautiful sunshine blessing the resort today.
Italy There is skiing on the glacier in Val Senales (20cm) with the runs hard packed and fast. Six lifts are open and the weather is exceptional for October. Cervinia (60cm) also has lifts open for snowsports with cloudy skies and some sunny spells.
North America Three lifts are open in sunny Timberline, Oregon today. Whistler is closed until the start of the 04/05 season.
Australia Falls Creek and Mounts Baw Baw, Buller and Hotham have now closed for the season. The only areas now remaining open are Perisher Blue and Thredbo: conditions are softening up in Perisher Blue (130/154), turning slushy in places in the afternoons though generally soft but good throughout. Thredbo (20/130) is crunchy is the mornings, soft in the afternoons, and the skies are currently blue.
New Zealand Excellent spring skiing and riding and good snow coverage can be found in the South Island resorts of Cardrona (70/210), Coronet Peak (80/115) and Porter Heights (110/120). High winds have caused a lot of lift closures in Mount Hutt (120/150) and on the North Island in Whakapapa (260/290) where there is also limited visibility. High winds have shut down all operations in nearby Turoa (302/325). Superb snow conditions in sunny Treble Cone (127/168). Most other ski areas in New Zealand are now closed for the summer.
Chile There is only now one resort still open for snowsports in Chile and that is Valle Nevado (0/30cm). Typical spring conditions exist and sunny weather is forecast for this week.
Argentina The best conditions in Cerro Catedral (0/160) are to be found above 1600m, where there is a good coverage of packed snow. Patchy cloud over Chapelco (0/60) shouldn’t deter skiers from making the most of a reasonable coverage of spring snow before the area closes on 12 October.

Thursday 7 October 2004 Introduction Three glaciers offer some reasonable skiing and riding options in Switzerland, with the selection set to broaden soon as Les Diablerets hopes to be added to the list. Some skiing is available in Italy, conditions are generally looking quite good in Austria, and in France, snow in Tignes is getting better by the day. In the USA, Timberline is the sole bastion of the snowsports seeker.
In the Southern Hemisphere, the amount of accessible snow is shrinking at lightning speed. There is only one ski area still open in both Chile and Argentina, and in Australia winter refuses to be banished beneath the darkening skies of Perisher Blue and Thredbo. Some excellent spring skiing and riding to be had in New Zealand on plenty of fresh snow.
Austria There is a sizable area open for skiing on the Hintertux Glacier (75cm), with 11 lifts open. Kaprun (107cm) has nine lifts open and with sunny spells there are some great conditions for autumn riding. There are hard packed conditions in Kaunertal (65cm) but four lifts are still open for snowsports. Conditions are being reported as good in Solden (50cm) and on the Stubai Glacier (50cm) hard packed snow means fast riding conditions.
France It feels as though winter is on its way and in Tignes (30cm), the snow has been falling on the glacier. The weather has cleared and nine lifts are open to accommodate skiing and riding.
Switzerland There is not yet any skiing on the glacier in Les Diablerets, though one lift is open for sightseeing and the area hopes to open some runs from 9 October. The Titlis glacier in Engelberg (20cm) has eight lifts open. There is some good fast skiing available on hard-packed snow in Saas-Fee (80cm) under overcast skies. Limited pistes are open in Zermatt (160cm), and it is looking mighty windy up top so take caution.
Italy The lifts are open until 4pm each day in Val Senales (20cm) where the weather is cloudy at present. Cervinia (60cm) is only open at weekends at the moment and this weekend, six lifts are expected to open although the weather is meant to be rainy with snow on the glacier.
North America Timberline (0/450cm) is opening for snowsports this weekend with a light scattering of snow expected to continue dusting the pistes over the next few days.
Australia The only ski areas which have not succumbed to the encroaching heat are Perisher Blue (130/154cm) and Thredbo (20/113cm), both of which will be closing on 10 October. In Perisher there is a fair coverage of softening spring snow, with the weather turning murky as rain and thunderstorms are anticipated. The picture isn’t much brighter in Thredbo, as cloud and gusty winds roll in. Very limited terrain is open here, with just two runs and three lifts open. Snow is becoming heavy.
New Zealand Fantastic skiing and riding in Turoa (290/305cm) and Whakapapa (260/280cm). Superb spring snow and beautiful sunshine in Treble Cone (127/167cm) and similarly gorgeous conditions in Coronet Peak (80/100cm) which is staying open longer than planned (until 17 October) to maximise access to the great skiing and riding available. A dusting of fresh snow in cloudy Mount Hutt (130/145cm) equals a very skiable fresh white blanket across the mountain. Snow conditions generally very good in all open resorts.
Chile Everywhere is now closed for the summer except Valle Nevado (0/30cm), where snow is hard-packed and the weather sunny.
Argentina All ski areas is Argentina are now closed for the summer except Cerro Catedral (0/140cm) where you will currently find clear skies and a good coverage of spring snow above 1600m. |
