Monday 25 October 2004 Introduction In the Northern Hemisphere, there is a plenitude of open ski areas in Austria, where the Hintertux and Molltall glaciers are looking good in the sunshine. A thaw has hit alpine France, preventing sun-blasted Alpe d’Huez and Les 2 Alpes from opening for planned early-season skiing, though resilient Tignes remains open. In Switzerland, Saas Fee is the highlight, hosting an exciting FIS competition and boasting the largest amount of open pistes in the country. Two resorts are open in Italy, and hype for the coming season mounts in North America as snow falls in Utah and Colorado.
New Zealand’s North Island offers the only snowsports-friendly terrain in the Southern Hemisphere, in Turoa and Whakapapa.
Austria On the Hintertux glacier (100cm) the sun is shining and the new terrain park and half-pipe are open, in addition to a good-sized ski area. Snow levels are decreasing on the Dachstein glacier (20cm). Recent snowfall on the Molltall glacier (40cm) has created some good skiing and riding conditions now basking in glorious sunshine. Conditions are also good in Solden (65cm) and the sun is out on the Stubai glacier (60cm).
France Alpe d’Huez has not been able to open for early season high-altitude skiing since the sun has been blazing down, thawing the slopes. However, snow is anticipated over the next few days and the area may open if the white stuff arrives soon. Similar warmth has plagued the nearby area of Les 2 Alpes to the same effect: no skiing or riding yet. Tignes (40cm) is sunny and windy, and conditions are variable: icy in places. Cloud and rain looks set to arrive later but snow is anticipated tomorrow to repair the damage.
Switzerland Les Diablerets (30cm) is open, but in a very limited way - only one run is skiable. Saas Fee (88cm) is a hive of activity at the moment as the FIS Freestyle World Cup kicks off today. Conditions are reasonable following fairly recent snowfall, and there are bursts of sunshine warming five open pistes. A few runs are open in Zermatt (120cm) and Engelberg (20cm) under heavy cloud cover.
Italy Cervinia (60cm) is now open seven days a week (weather permitting) with skiing and riding now happening on the glacier. Three lifts are open and the sky is grey. Snow is generally hard-packed in Val Senales (40cm), where the weather is a lot brighter, and a good selection of pistes and lifts are open.
North America Timberline (635cm) has been receiving a lovely load of fresh snow lately, so midweek opening and skiing on lower slopes looks ever more likely. Top-to-bottom skiing is going on at Mammoth Mountain (120cm), and another storm is passing through bringing more snow – one lift currently open, with more to open soon. One lift and two trails are open in Loveland, where it has continued to snow, bringing the base level up to 45cm. It has also been snowing in Steamboat and The Canyons, both nearing 50cm.
Australia The season has concluded: no skiing or riding available in Oz.
New Zealand Skiing and riding in New Zealand is restricted to the North Island. Snow conditions are soft in Turoa (295cm). Visibility isn’t great, as heavy cloud is hanging over the ski area. The state of affairs is very similar in Whakapapa (240cm). Skies ought to clear in both areas tomorrow or the day after.
Chile The season had concluded: no skiing or riding available in Chile.
Argentina The season has concluded: no skiing or riding available in Argentina. |

Thursday 21 October 2004 Introduction The brightest news in the Northern Hemisphere pertains to North America - there has been an exciting 120cm snowfall in Mammoth, CA, provoking the area to open today. Moving to Europe, snowsports in Austria is generally under overcast skies, with snow falling in a few areas. Switzerland has also received a dusting of snow in parts over the last couple of days. The choice of destinations for skiing and riding in France doubles this weekend, when Alpe d’Huez opens, and Italy will benefit from a similar situation when Cervinia switches from its weekend-only opening schedule this weekend.
In the Southern Hemisphere, the only resort open for snowsports is Turoa, on New Zealand’s North Island. Conditions in Turoa are looking fantastic.
Austria Many Austrian resorts are under a blanket of cloud at the moment, and slightly wind-swept. It has not snowed since around 16 October in most areas, though it is currently snowing lightly on the Molltall Glacier (40cm) where 10cm has already accrued. The Hintertux glacier (100cm) and the Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun (131cm) boast the deepest snow base, and there are good snow conditions in Solden (65cm) and Pitztal (40cm).
France Alpe d’Huez is scheduled to open for snowsports this Saturday, 23 October. Snow conditions in Tignes (65cm) are good, and all glacier lifts are open, though the weather is cloudy and windy.
Switzerland It has recently been snowing lightly in Saas Fee (90cm): good snow conditions accessible via six open lifts. Zermatt (120cm) was also recipient of a 10cm snowfall last night. Four lifts and runs in the resort are currently open. Though it opened for a period this week, Les Diablerets (40cm) has closed again: sightseeing only.
Italy Cervinia (60cm) will commence opening seven days a week from this Saturday, 23 October. All glacier lifts are open in Val Senales/Schnalstal (30cm) where the sun is out and light winds blowing.
North America In the last four days an awesome 120cm of snow has descended on Mammoth Mountain, CA. Celebrations all round as the ski area opens today, the earliest opening in the last decade! Snow is forecast this week in cloudy Timberline (250cm), so a wider skiing area may be enabled to open up soon. Three lifts are opening this weekend for access to the Palmer Snowfield. Loveland is also open with an extra 10cm of snow having fallen in the last few days.
Australia The season has concluded in Australia: there is no skiing or riding available.
New Zealand It has been snowing again in Turoa (295/315cm)! Perfect conditions: blue skies, sunshine, still air and fresh powder. It does not appear that Whakapapa (250/260cm) is open at present though there has been some fresh snow and the weather looks good.
Chile The season has concluded in Chile: there is no skiing or riding available.
Argentina The season has concluded in Argentina: there is no skiing or riding available.

Monday 18 October 2004 Introduction In the Northern Hemisphere, it has been snowing in Europe to the advantage of ski terrain across the continent. Austria got the most out of the passing clouds, with falls of up to 25cm in lucky regions. Options in Switzerland are widening as Les Diablerets makes itself available to eager skiers and riders in the vicinity. France and Italy still have only one resort each open full-time, with Cervinia doing a bit of supplementary temping on the weekends. Colorado and Oregon are the only states in the US blessed with open slopes this early in the year.
In the Southern Hemisphere, Whakapapa and Turoa on New Zealand’s North Island have received a good snowfall recently, which means some brilliant fresh powder is out there just begging to be ridden. Everywhere else is now closed for the summer.
Austria Snow has at least dusted all open Austrian ski areas over the past couple of days, boosting the snow base and generating some really good conditions in places. In particular, Hintertux (100cm) bagged 25cm of fresh snow and the skies have now cleared for everyone to enjoy it. Kaunertal (70cm) also received a good amount of snow, though skies remain overcast. It is moderately windy in Kaprun (137cm), Stubai (60cm) and Solden (55cm).
France The weather is windy and gloomy but in contrast prospects are very bright in terms of snow conditions as 20cm of fresh snow has been bestowed upon Tignes (65cm). A good amount of lifts and pistes are open.
Switzerland As promised, Les Diablerets (40cm) has now opened, with just the glacier lift currently running under overcast skies. A 10cm coating of fresh snow has fallen throughout most of the open ski areas in Switzerland, leaving good skiing and riding conditions under sunny skies particularly in Saas Fee (89cm) and on the Titlis glacier (30cm). Zermatt also benefited from the deposit, and now has a base of 120cm.
Italy Cervinia (60cm) has received some fresh snow, so conditions look good for when the lifts open this weekend, and the sun is out with five lifts running in Val Senales (30cm).
North America In Oregon, Timberline will be opening this weekend from 8:30am until 3pm. Over in Colorado, Loveland is open with 45cm of snow after a good snowfall on 13 October.
Australia The season has concluded in Australia: there is no skiing or riding available.
New Zealand Whakapapa (250/270cm) and Turoa (290/305cm) are still going strong with some fantastic snow conditions following about 25cm of fresh snowfall over the past few days. Powder is become progressively more tracked and packed on trail. Hunt down the fresh powder off-trail in both resorts. The season has concluded on the South Island: there is no skiing or riding available.
Chile The season has concluded in Chile: there is no skiing or riding available.
Argentina The season has concluded in Argentina: there is no skiing or riding available.

Thursday 14 October 2004 Introduction In the Northern Hemisphere, temperatures have fallen on the glaciers of Austria and Switzerland, where there is a good variety of skiing and riding options: snow has been falling in a number of areas and is expected to continue, improving the slopes. In France, a plenty of pistes and lifts are open in Tignes; in Italy, Val Senales is open; and in North America, Timberline will be opening this weekend.
In the Southern Hemisphere, there is now no riding in Chile, Argentina or Australia. Only one area is open for snowsports: Turoa on New Zealand’s North Island. The three other resorts that ought to be open are cowering from the high winds.
Austria Most of the Austrian glaciers are open for autumn skiing and riding. There are some good conditions in Solden (55cm) and Hintertux (75cm) after recent snowfall. Fair weather is making riding conditions enjoyable on the Dachstein Glacier (20cm) and in Kaprun (113cm). Kaunertal (40cm), Pitztal (40cm) and the Molltal Glacier (30cm) also have small areas open for snowsports.
France In Tignes (30cm), the weather over the glacier is currently gloomy with light winds. All glacier lifts are open, though the snowpark is currently closed. Light snow is expected over the next few days.
Switzerland Temperatures have dropped considerably in Switzerland; it is –10C on the Titlis glacier (20cm) where snow is expected to fall this evening. Les Diablerets is still closed, hoping to open on 16 October. The sun is out in Saas Fee (81cm) warming skiers and riders enjoying some good snow and the area is gearing up for the arrival of the FIS Freestyle World Cup on 25 October. There is some terrain open on the Klein Matterhorn (120cm), where it is currently snowing.
Italy Lifts opening this weekend in Cervinia and then daily from 23 October. Val Senales (30cm) is enjoying some lovely sunshine and 10cm of fresh snow. Plenty of lifts are open.
North America In Timberline (0/450cm) the sun is shining and lifts will be opening this weekend for skiing and riding on the Palmer Snowfield.
Australia The season has concluded in Australia: there is no skiing or riding available.
New Zealand Four ski areas have not yet closed for the season in New Zealand: two on the North Island and two on the South Island. However, only one is actually open today. Whakapapa (250/270cm) is completely closed for the day due to gale force winds, and just three lifts are open in Turoa (290/305cm) for the same reason.
Heading south, Mount Hutt (110/125cm) has suffered the same fate as Turoa, and has battened down the hatches for the day because of the strong winds; ditto in Coronet Peak (80/115cm). These two hope to re-open before the close of the season. Though projected to extend its season again, Rainbow has had to close.
Chile The season has concluded in Chile: there is no skiing or riding available.
Argentina The season has concluded in Argentina: there is no skiing or riding available.

Monday 11 October 2004 Introduction In the Northern Hemisphere, Austria is looking generally quite grey, but there is a reasonable amount of skiing and riding available on the glaciers with 10cm of fresh snow in a couple of resorts. In France, Tignes remains the only open area, and has some decent snow. In Switzerland the weather is also fine in most areas, and there is quite a lot of accessible terrain. The glacier in Italian Val Senales has received some fresh snow and remains the only midweek ski destination in Italy, though the options double at the weekend when Cervinia will be open. In North America, Timberline also sticks to its (3 day) weekend-only opening hours.
In the Southern Hemisphere, after the end of the day and the closing of Argentinian Cerro Catedral, only a few areas in New Zealand will remain open for skiing and riding.
Austria On the Dachstein Glacier (20cm) four lifts are open in windy and cloudy conditions. In Hintertux (75cm) it is also murky though plenty of lifts are open and there is an abundance of skiable terrain. Grey cloud casts its shadow over Kaprun (3/117cm) as well, though here slopes are experiencing the benefit of 10cm of fresh snow, and Kaunertal (80cm) got a dusting from the same clouds.
France The sun is currently shining on the Grande Motte glacier in Tignes (30cm), and snow is anticipated later this week. The snowpark is open and visibility is great. Alpe d’Huez will be opening for some high-altitude skiing on the Pic Blanc from 23 October.
Switzerland There is fine weather in Saas Fee (80cm) and Engelberg (20cm) at present, but rain and snow is scheduled for mid-week. There are decent sized areas open for autumn skiing in Saas Fee and also Zermatt (120cm), where the snow is hard packed.
Italy There have been some snow flurries in Val Senales (20cm) and the lifts are open until 4pm each day for skiing and riding. Cervinia (60cm) has been open over the weekend and is due to open again this weekend. Snow may fall this week and the snow is in pretty good condition.
North America Skiing is available in Timberline (450cm) this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There has been a sprinkling of new snow but fair weather is the order of the day at present.
Australia Even the previously defiant Perisher Blue and Thredbo have now succumbed to the onset of summer. The season has come to an end in Australia.
New Zealand Many resorts closed over the weekend and it is the last week of the season for the rest of the resorts. Coronet Peak (80/115cm) is still open and has some great spring skiing and riding. Mount Hutt (125/125cm) will be open for Labour Weekend and has packed conditions, softening into the afternoon. On the North Island, there are strong winds effecting lift opening in Whakapapa (270/270cm), and in Turoa (290/305cm) spring conditions dominate. There is a possibility that Rainbow will open this weekend.
Chile The season has wound down in Chile: there are no trails open.
Argentina Skiing in Argentina is over for the season today. With all other areas already shut, Cerro Catedral (0/120cm) is closing this afternoon under cloudy skies with limited visibility. Bid the gloomy snow a sad farewell and take your skis to the Northern Hemisphere… |

This is the long range Winter forecast for the UK.
Net-weather winter preview forecast Issued 07/10/2004 Welcome to the net-weather winter preview forecast... This isn't the official net-weather forecast for this winter, but a preview of the possible outcome based on current trends and patterns. Our official forecast for the period December to February will be released during November. At this point the coming Winter looks like being average or just below in terms of mean temperatures (Dec/Jan/Feb CET), which would be quite a pattern change on recent years. Obviously confidence isn’t very high at this early stage though. If you're looking for snow, our current inclination is for this Winter to "deliver" in Northern areas at least. We expect there could be a few significantly large falls of snow across the North during this Winter, further South its more uncertain but this area of the UK may still see its share. December may well be a month to watch for - perhaps we should "look to the East"... We feel another main talking point of this winter may be (high) rainfall during a few intense but relatively short spells. There could be some fairly frequent Northerly blasts, aswell as perhaps something from the East during December. So something to look forward to for snow and cold weather enthusiasts?!? Maybe!

Thursday 7 October 2004 Introduction Three glaciers offer some reasonable skiing and riding options in Switzerland, with the selection set to broaden soon as Les Diablerets hopes to be added to the list. Some skiing is available in Italy, conditions are generally looking quite good in Austria, and in France, snow in Tignes is getting better by the day. In the USA, Timberline is the sole bastion of the snowsports seeker.
In the Southern Hemisphere, the amount of accessible snow is shrinking at lightning speed. There is only one ski area still open in both Chile and Argentina, and in Australia winter refuses to be banished beneath the darkening skies of Perisher Blue and Thredbo. Some excellent spring skiing and riding to be had in New Zealand on plenty of fresh snow.
Austria There is a sizable area open for skiing on the Hintertux Glacier (75cm), with 11 lifts open. Kaprun (107cm) has nine lifts open and with sunny spells there are some great conditions for autumn riding. There are hard packed conditions in Kaunertal (65cm) but four lifts are still open for snowsports. Conditions are being reported as good in Solden (50cm) and on the Stubai Glacier (50cm) hard packed snow means fast riding conditions.
France It feels as though winter is on its way and in Tignes (30cm), the snow has been falling on the glacier. The weather has cleared and nine lifts are open to accommodate skiing and riding.
Switzerland There is not yet any skiing on the glacier in Les Diablerets, though one lift is open for sightseeing and the area hopes to open some runs from 9 October. The Titlis glacier in Engelberg (20cm) has eight lifts open. There is some good fast skiing available on hard-packed snow in Saas-Fee (80cm) under overcast skies. Limited pistes are open in Zermatt (160cm), and it is looking mighty windy up top so take caution.
Italy The lifts are open until 4pm each day in Val Senales (20cm) where the weather is cloudy at present. Cervinia (60cm) is only open at weekends at the moment and this weekend, six lifts are expected to open although the weather is meant to be rainy with snow on the glacier.
North America Timberline (0/450cm) is opening for snowsports this weekend with a light scattering of snow expected to continue dusting the pistes over the next few days.
Australia The only ski areas which have not succumbed to the encroaching heat are Perisher Blue (130/154cm) and Thredbo (20/113cm), both of which will be closing on 10 October. In Perisher there is a fair coverage of softening spring snow, with the weather turning murky as rain and thunderstorms are anticipated. The picture isn’t much brighter in Thredbo, as cloud and gusty winds roll in. Very limited terrain is open here, with just two runs and three lifts open. Snow is becoming heavy.
New Zealand Fantastic skiing and riding in Turoa (290/305cm) and Whakapapa (260/280cm). Superb spring snow and beautiful sunshine in Treble Cone (127/167cm) and similarly gorgeous conditions in Coronet Peak (80/100cm) which is staying open longer than planned (until 17 October) to maximise access to the great skiing and riding available. A dusting of fresh snow in cloudy Mount Hutt (130/145cm) equals a very skiable fresh white blanket across the mountain. Snow conditions generally very good in all open resorts.
Chile Everywhere is now closed for the summer except Valle Nevado (0/30cm), where snow is hard-packed and the weather sunny.
Argentina All ski areas is Argentina are now closed for the summer except Cerro Catedral (0/140cm) where you will currently find clear skies and a good coverage of spring snow above 1600m. |
