| They used to have a great flood pool in Bude mate, was good for the kids to play in the sea water without the risk of getting battered by waves! However when the weather turns at Bude there's no escaping them, it gets very intense, and there are some pretty mean rock formations too if memory serves me well. |

| Cheers Bods. We've booked a cottage 2 miles from Bude, hence the 2 schools based there. It should be good as Luke can play on the beach with Claire while I flail about in the surf. |

FB, I learnt with this bunch of dudes, http://www.westcoastsurfari.com/ top draw, couldn't fault it, they put us up in B&B hostel accomo and drove us to Watergate Bay every day..

oh and dennis...like with most things... its only unrewarding when you cant do it that well! or i guess just not for everyone! i was SHOCKING to begin with but kept it up and after a few lessons got alright! and is totally rewarding! theres so much power behind the wave  and when you can do more than just go in a straight line its a lot more interesting! like boarding i guess..!!

Two sessions
Had one session in Sennen which was very ace but kerfunkering by the end. We just loafed on the boards after the lesson and enjoyed the sun. got a wicked wetsuit tan off the back of it.
the only way to get fit for surfing is to actually do it. |

i could teach you pete  how the tables have turned!! haha ok...im not serious
but both those placeslook alright! i would suggest doing the two seperate sessions rather all in one go! id say its sometimes easier to pick things up after a rest!! push yourself on the first day and then on the next day..after a rest..things seem clearer and you pick things up!! kinda like i was with turns in austria (though im still not that great haha)
its awesom fun though when you get it right!!.... good work out too 
also...make sure you keepyour leash untangled...rather horrible experience.. getting trapped under the water by the board lol!!
but of course most importantly...ENJOY its sweet
Edit: plus i didnt learn with raven, i learned in watergate bay, but mike is an absolutely top bloke and if you have him then u'll be well set!! |

2 lessons and you'll be fine, just make sure that you lie further back on the board, otherwise if you do catch a decent wave, you'll find yourself doing the scorpion  |

Haha exactly!
I had a 1/2 day lesson at Watergate Bay, Newquay and that was all we needed to learn the initial steps to getting up on the board and the way of the water. It is super tiring on the arms and you feel like you're never going to get up on your board but once you do it's an awesome feeling. Like putting your first turns in on your snowboard again! Be patient and keep at it, you will prevail!
The more I got mullered by the waves the more it made me jump straight back on for more!!!
I can't wait to hit the surf in Kauai in 21 days time

FB, 2 lessons should do it, thouhg be warned i've had 5 and still can't do it (and frankly have given up).
Seems to me one of THE most pointless and unrewarding pastimes known to man.
Swim, swim, swim.... sit around, sit around, wait, drown, paddle jump up. drown, get munched... repeat..... |

Hey mate,
Not sure what level they are talking about getting you to in a day. First sessions should be on beach learning about the wave sets and rips, then how to pop up on the board, etc. These are easy enough physically. As is starting off on broken waves at around waist depth.
But as soon as you start paddling out and trying to catch unbroken surf it's all on your arms, shoulders and abs. Whats your swimming stamina like ? Like boarding when learning you are invariably less efficient and your muscles less trained, so you get knackered. Keep in mind unlike boarding you can't always just stop, you might still have to paddle out of the incoming sets, or get battered by them.
Can't say what's best for you personally (obviously), but you may find towards the end of 5 or 6 hours you're still focused and trying to improve but your arms don't work any more. Like anything else though, a lot depends on your instructor and how good/attentive they are.

Thought the GB Bretheren could help me out with this one....
Off on a family holiday in June to a holiday cottage a ccouple of miles from Bude. Fancied learning to surf for the last couple fo years so am going to give it a go. So do I pay £40 for a full day (think it's 5½/6 hours of lessons) or have 2 separate sessions of 3 hours at £25 each? I know from teaching LTBIAD at Tamworth that it's tiring so wondered what surfers thought? |
