It's only £8 for 2 hours on a Monday night so I'm goin on Monday (was a bit too dry today but a bit extra wax seemed to help). I'm goin to see if my mates want to come to Cas/Halifax next month (maybe Cas on 13th) and then decide whether we're goin to Aviemore or France this year before doin something bigger the year after

was easier said than done...I was okay stopping on toe edge but not heel...HOWEVER I've just had an hour lesson at Sunderland dry slope and she said I don't need anymore lessons and to just go practice. Turns out as well that I'd been given a 150 and it should have been more like 145 and board was too heavy for me. Managed to turn from heel and down and back round to toe edge...not so good the other way at turning back round to heel edge but hey it's just practice

Don't stop like my mate did a couple of years ago. Using my arm to slow you down is just plain rude

Stopping is the same method you used to slow the board down when you initially did heel and toe sideslips. Bend your knees and either push your shins into your boots toeside or calves into high backs on heelside.

We normally do the fresh trax session, thats 3 hrs! and starts at 9am so we're first on the slope! Probs best to ring up first, and i'm sure they'll fit you in for a lesson. Boots and board and bindings are included in the slope pass, you just need your waterproofs and some gloves. Hope you're an early riser! PM me your number and we'll take it from there!

My boss has just been pesterin me to take some of my hols so if she okays it tomorrow I might take you up on the offer..cheers...obv. I'll share petrol
Won't I have to prebook a lesson cos they'll not let me board if I'm as crap as I think I am?? It's my birthday on Sunday so I might treat myself to a few hours dependin how long you stayin? I'll have to rent board etc. down there like. Will let you know tomorrow and if so I'll cancel the lesson I have at Silksworth on Saturday (I know which I'd prefer spendin the cash on!)

I could be going to Cas on Fri morning if you're interested?! There should be a bunch of us meeting up there, so you'll meet fellow boarders, who maybe able to help you out too! I'm coming from Gateshead...

Thanks Bagsy
I need to just allow plenty of time to stop too instead of tryin to stop too quickly and leavin it too late (too close to others) Can't wait until I'm no longer a liability and can just go n practice! Wanted to go to Cas on Thurs but want to wait till I've mastered the basics!!

In reply to the "how to stop" bit... I've never tried dry slope, but on snow as a beginner you're generally told to ease off the gas (i.e. flatten both your feet) and look straight up the fall line (toe edge) or straight down the fall line (heel edge) when you want to stop. That'll tend to get your hips and shoulders in the right direction so your board points across the fall line and scrapes to a stop. If that doesn't work then, yeah, throwing yourself on the ground will do the trick. Could get painful though. Might wanna encase yourself in bubble wrap.
It's not just a sport, it's a way of life.

Never tried the dry slope but have been along for a look, the slope at Wickham isn't very big so if dry's the way you go, your prob better off at Sunderland. Castleford is pretty good and perfect for learning the basics. It's been a couple of years since i last visited mainly due to the fact that it cost me around £50 a trip (petrol, slope fee and Nando's). I'd rather save the cash for an extra hol in the winter.

Being based in Consett you'll no doubt get the chance to take your board out on a local hill over the winter (fingers xd). Keep an eye on the weather and give Weardale Ski Club (just passed stanhope) a try.
