QUOTE (morzine_oxy - 09/05/2008 @ 10:38:48) oh dear...its a whole 5 minutes to great blakenham from my house i wonder if theyd do like an annual pass. hope so! its true that grt blakenham and claydon etc are full of oldies...which might no be ideal for them but its going into the old quarry which is a little bit out of the way for most of them...im glad to see that they are trying to make outweigh the ecological cons with the trees and stuff. Some guilt free riding minutes from my home...yumma yumma yumma About 10 miles for me... just need to trundle up the A14... probably about 15 minutes It is nice they're being made to play attention to the Ecological side of it, I appreciate that... it's just a shame when that sort of stuff is involved it always takes so long... this has been going on for 5 years or something silly now :S |

Not 100%, but assuming they can sort out the few problems, which they say they're certain they can, it'll get permission ok. My Neighbour happens to be one of the Architects for it I'm I'm trying to keep my ear open for gossip x)
And was that a trick question? I can see why people around here are worrying about the traffic, but a portion of the money for the development is being put to improving areas of the main road which really need it and won't be getting it any other way. Opening the station specifically for the complex should help..means you can have a drink and not worry about it :D Straight links to London and Norwich.
As for the area itself, I suppose again I can see the objection for the people living nearby as it's going to be a pretty damn big structure - The area is a lot of elderly people and the sort who like to moan, but I guess it's not totally unfounded. Thing is, Suffolk doesn't really have a lot to offer apart from nice countryside, and there will still be plenty of that to go around, so yeah, absolutely I'm all for it. . . just need to try and wrangle a job there |

Incase anyone is interested, the EADT web site probably had one of the best summaries of what went on, and what the conditions are etc :-
SNOASIS will be built at Great Blakenham as long as the developers can convince the government on a few remaining sustainability and wildlife issues, it was revealed today.
In a letter to interested parties the Department for Communities and Local Government said: “The Inspector recommended that planning permission be granted for all three applications, subject to conditions.
“The Secretary of State agrees with the Inspector's conclusions, except where stated, and is minded to agree with his recommendation.”
With regards to SnOasis - referred to as application A - the Secretary of State concluded the development would have a “very positive” impact on employment numbers and the local economy.
She also thought it would be well served by public transport and that the applicant's visitor forecasts formed a reasonable basis on which the application could be determined.
However she did say the development “was likely to have some adverse impact on the landscape” and expressed concerns about the wider sustainability of the proposal.
Despite this she felt the concerns were “capable of being addressed” if the applicant could ensure the highest possible energy efficiency and a reduction in emissions.
The letter said: “In the circumstances, the Secretary of State has decided to issue a minded to grant planning permission for application A, which is subject to the applicant being able to provide a firm commitment to secure 100% of the development's energy supply from decentralised and renewable or low-carbon energy, unless it can be demonstrated that this is not feasible or viable.
“If it can be demonstrated that 100% is not feasible or viable, the applicant should set out what level could be secured to ensure the outcome sought, and provide a firm commitment to secure this through a Section 106 agreement.”
Onslow Suffolk Ltd now have to submit revised plans to the Secretary of State - guaranteeing it can meet the conditions outlined above - before a final decision is made on or before September 17. |

Ok, so it's probably people around Suffolk that'll care about this most - but SnOasis has been basically given the go ahead with just a few little environmental issues to work out :D No more travelling to MK once it's up. Bring on the 415m slope
Quote below :-
SnOasis gets the go-ahead bringing an avalanche of opportunities. Following government approval, work on the world’s first indoor winter sports resort will now commence delivering enormous economic benefits to the local community and the country as a whole. Costing an estimated £350 million the privately funded development will be deemed a “Super Site” by the construction industry, meaning this aspect alone will make it of international importance. Locally, a package of benefits costing £29 million will be put in place covering a wide range of projects including: the planting of 130,000 trees, a 40 acre ecological mitigation area, improvements to the Copdock intersection of the A12 and A14, skills and training initiatives, plus a main line Railway Station linking to London Liverpool Street in just over an hour. The full impact of the economic benefits will only be truly understood once the project is underway.
During the construction phase it is expected that 3,500 jobs will be created. When complete, a further 1,800 full-time equivalent jobs will be provided. These new employment opportunities will stimulate the local economy through spending in shops, the need for accommodation increasing demand and prices, and the sourcing of supplies from businesses within the region. As far as possible contracts will be awarded to local companies further strengthening the projects benefit to the economy.
On completion, SnOasis will provide the UK with the ultimate winter sports resort, and the world with a totally new holiday and sports concept. Covering 350 acres, the family themed resort will feature recreational activities encompassing winter sports of all kinds plus an extensive array of other sports. In addition to being a resort destination it will become a winter sports centre of excellence for athletes preparing for major competitions, with facilities matching the best in the world. Also, working with several educational establishments plans are underway to develop strategies aimed at educating students at all levels in disciplines related to the project.
The wider scheme proposals include plans for the development of around 421 new homes on an adjacent site including 35% of affordable housing, provision of land and a financial contribution for a new school and police station, highway improvements, roadside nature reserve and a cycle track.
Godfrey Spanner, Managing Director of Onslow Suffolk, the developer of the scheme said: “My nightmare is over, now my dream can begin. We have been working on this project for six years, with costs running into many millions. At last, SnOasis will become a reality to the benefit of Ipswich, Suffolk, East Anglia, the country, and of course, all of our hopes for greater success at major winter sports competitions.”
He continued: “It’s now time to move forward, just think, we will now be able to hold major international winter sports events in the UK, many for the first time. Also, we will give the 4 million winter sports enthusiasts, our athletes and the Ski industry in general a truly national focus. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Olympic Association, past Sports Ministers, Tourism bodies and all who supported us throughout the planning process for their help.” |
