I was about to say this also... dont go early season as it can be hit of mis... March April are the months we get the snow and good weather.
Im getting tired of everyone saying how risky it is planning trips up to Scotland for snowsports. You wouldnt book Morzine in mid July, so why book Scotland in the wrong months?
Sure the resorts open pretty much as soon as there is runs (sometimes near) complete, but leave that to the locals who ride hard whatever the conditions, icy whatever.
As first tracks says, March / April is the surest months... god we had 4 ft fresh in June a couple of yeras ago at the Nevis Range. |

Early season is always pretty hit-or-miss, especially the first half of December. I've seen it at every stage from having deep freshies, to sparse and nothing at all. If you do want to go, on the off-chance, then definitely be organised to do other activities too if the worst comes to the worst.
If you want to get some quality Scottish riding in, March/April is always the time to go. Can't think of any winter in the last ~10 (apart from 2003) that hasn't had some fantastic conditions then. The Scottish season has always (even in the 50s etc) been unusual in that traditionally our winter only really gets into full swing in the spring, though most people only think of winter as being around January etc. Hence why when all the resorts still have snow, they have to close early due to lack of punters rather than lack of snow. Good example is Glencoe closing this year with basically all their runs complete, full width and with metres of depth - 10m in some areas - some of those upper runs are still complete, a month after the lifts closed. Just goes to show.. |

highland-instinct No I don't ride in Scotland... I'm just too damn extreme to actually go riding at all. |

| Booking in advance so early in Scotland's winter sports season would be a huge risk. If you're willing to take it then make sure you've got a back-up plan. Kayaking, mountain biking and hiking to name a few are all superb around Scotland and easily accessible with a spot of google searching. |

Keep an eye on winterhighland as has already been said. During the winter I keep a constant eye on it, best site for weather, reviews, conditions etc etc in scotland. WAP version also for your mobile which is bloody useful as I have been on the road to Glen Coe a few time only to find out its shut and winterhighland has pointed me to fort william!!!
As for places to go, my favourite is Aonach Mor (Nevis Range), behind Fort William. I pretty much taught myself how to ride there so it is fairly sentimental . However if you are after some good off piste action the back Corries behind the summit offer some bloody good riding. I spoke to one of the instructors up there this year and he said the powder down the back was the best he (or any of the other instructors) had ever riden!! Not a bad comment I think. I find Glen Coe too small and too icy at times and Cairngorm has too many fence lines for my liking but great days boarding can be found easily at both (weather permitting). Anywayyyyyy.... I recommend Aonach Mor cant wait till the snow fill up the gullys and cories again :D |
