I forgot to mention one more pro over On Tour: SSX 3 had online capabilities where you could race against your friends. Hopefully the next SSX game will feature this as well.

It's got kind of SSX 1 / SSX 3 styling, with SSX 3 and SSX On Tour courses. It's not only 'Wii-ified' (e.g. carving with the nunchuk, drawing shapes to do uber tricks, etc.), but it's also somewhat 'Nintendo-fied' so the characters a bit more cartoonish - but not really in an SSX Tricky type way - and the overall style is very clean and polished.

The ubers are very challenging, but it feels really cool when you draw a shape and your character pulls off an inverted boneless or something other trick. All the music is by Junkie XL, and most of it is pretty good. It's far more challenging than On Tour, but it's a lot of fun. I just unlocked Peak 3 with my first character, Mac.

For a video that gives you a better feel for the game, right-click and Save As the following:

On Tour's got the cool blurry speed effects, and if you like metal/rock, the soundtrack and art are definitely in your favor. Outside of that, everything else is a rehash or a downgrade.

* The create-a-character was half-arsed and made some of the ugliest people ever.
* Subpar controls when compared to SSX 3.
* The colors were all washed out and drab, especially your character, even in daytime.
* Zero character interaction or DJ, which made the previous SSX installments special.
* The rails physics were off, with the rider looking like he's floating above the rail, not sliding on it.
* The annoying camera angles during Monster Tricks gave no view down, not showing when to come out of the Monster Trick, leading to wipeouts and lost, chained trick points.
* The characters were bland and stupid, and the voice for Kaori was bordering on racial slurs.
* Minimal replay value, and the courses were no where near as fun.

A lot of it is subjective, and as far as video games go, On Tour is still a better than average game. But compared to the rest in the series (especially SSX 3), it's a big let down. I've beat each game to 100% completion and On Tour was the most difficult because I could barely bring myself to play it. Outsiders might dig it, but long term SSX'ers like me want to forget it.

It does get a little confusing when they don't add numbers to each. The series goes in this order, from oldest to most recent:

SSX (PS2 launch title)

SSX Tricky (arcade, cartoonified SSX)

SSX 3 (quality game)

SSX On Tour (SSX 3 rock-styled rehash, most people's least favorite)

SSX Blur (Wii-only version of SSX 3 and On Tour courses with motion-sensitive Wii control scheme)

If you liked On Tour, try SSX 3. Apart from the lack of On Tour's speed effects, it's vastly superior in every other way, even graphics. Tricky's not everyone's cup of tea, being so 'arcade'.

I got to pick this up (and a Wii!), and it's tons of fun. You definitely have to master the tutorials before trying to play, but once you've got those down pat and have been playing for a while, it's great. (Uber tricks were extremely tough at first, but once you get the knack for 'em, they're not bad at all.) Even just carving with the nunchuk and its analog stick is such a smooth feeling.

The Wii in general is cool. We just downloaded the Internet software (free) and were watching the 29 Ground Tricks youtube video on our TV. Cool stuff.

And after having played it, it's bloody difficult! Controls seem complicated until you've been playing for a while. Only had a quick go and sure it would get easier in time. But was great fun

I haven't read mention of this game here, so here it is. It's the new SSX game, appearing exclusively for the Nintendo Wii. It's not really a "new" game though, as all the courses are cleaned up versions of SSX3 and On Tours tracks. The main focus was the Wii controls. I haven't played it yet, but I have played the Wii and plan on getting one so with this game not long after that. (Nag me for a review in a few months!)

Here are some trailers, including one showing how the game is played with the motion-sensitive Wiimotes.
