I am still deciding which foot I am. When I started one instructor said I was regular and the next said I was goofy. So by the time I got to the mountains, I really was confused. On the mountain that I could turn either side, but would drop in goofy, but leaning to the side, not straight down. So this time around I want to develop my goofy side, so first couple of days on the slopes will be working the turns. One question though if you can turn both ways, what's wrong with that? food for thought. snow on winter |

All the tests put me as a goofy rider and I surf right foot forward but am definitely 100% regular on a snowboard - riding goofy feels very un-natural.
Maybe I'm strange! |

QUOTE (smilenl - 03/09/2008 @ 12:15:07) Remember being told that in Italy they set up the stance equal +/- for beginners and don't bother for the first lessons in getting them to decide which foot is "front". Most boards are set up this way at Tamworth with +15, -15.
LadyJane - you can do all the tests you like, but you wil never fully know until you start doing diagonal sideslips, as in the main you will find it easier to weight one leg over the other. When teaching beginners, I always go through how you choose your lead leg, mainly as I always start with a bit of scooting. I do say not to worry though, as we will find out later which foot you prefer to lead with. |

| I play badminton and tennis quite a lot too and although i'm right handed (and write with my right hand), i can only play badminton and tennis with my left hand. I have no idea why this is!! |

fatbob i've found this really helpful as a learner because altho i do all the 'tests' with right leg forward i am much more comfortable facing down the slope when starting off in a lesson & heading left which contradicts each other - i think?! At least i'm not the only one whose confused! |

When i started learning to board, the Instructor pushed me from behind to see which foot i put out in front of me first - my right. This meant that i started learning goofy. After a few lessons (and everyone else in the group being regular) i decided to try it the other way around. I persevered with it, but it just didn't feel quite right. I spent a few seasons riding regular but never really progressing. I went to a Progression Session a few months ago at the Snowdome in Tamworth and the Instructor there pulled me to one side and asked me if i'd tried riding goofy. He then persuaded me to switch my board back to goofy and since then i've found it so much easier.
I think the moral to my story is that it doesn't matter when you're learning. Just give both a go, and sooner or later it'll become obvious what you should be. |

The kitchen floor slide is the way I'd reccommend. But when riding I'd say to try and learn to do everything both ways, save you a lot of time when learning switch. So's you don't end up one of us old geezers who wish they'd learnt it years ago but were having too much fun! |

Presume it only works when you're not having to deal with lift tows. |

will have to try these tests out at home as I have no idea either, I was a dancer for 18 years and so am equally comfortable on either foot but i suppose i should choose! Biggreen suggested i ride normal so we can share anchor lifts as he rides goofy lol |
