The HD6 version of imovie is great for basic editing, easily on par with the likes of pinnacle that I have used on the pc, and its much more stable (helps being on a mac).

The new version with ilife 08 has some good features but isn't great to use. It doesn't have a timeline view so attempting to edit clips to music is difficult.

Apple got such bad feedback from the new imovie hence letting you download the old one for free!

Final cut does look great, but probably overkill for the most of us.

it appears that you can have both as both seem to be running simultaneously - HD6 looks a better package with tons and tons of features for titles, transitions and effects.

iMovie 6HD is the older version of that which you've probably got with iLife 08.
It's a free download from Apple but I thought you couldn't have both versions installed at the same time...

Nopes not possible, idvd doenst make any movies it just sticks exsisting movies in a dvd format and helps you burn them to disk. It doesn't have an export function as thats not what it was made for. Its kind of like asking why you cant draw pictures in internet explorer, its just not that kind of programme

Not a Mac user but i know abit about Quicktime and i would of thought you could export iDVD to Quicktime. You can then load up Mov's to youtube etc.

A google search provides these links:

thanks you guys for your quick response,

i think i need to test drive some of the software, there is an apple store near me which i think i will pop into and see if i can have a look at the FCP lite version.

if i like it and it does what i want it to i will then see how i obtain it - probably get suckered into buying it there and then

Does it have to be legit software ?
If not, hit any of the BitTorrent type sites or sign up for Newsgroups.

If it does, go to the Apple Store website, click "Chat", tell them you need Software like Final Cut and that you're a student. Watch the price tumble

Yeah Final Cut Pro is over kill if you just want to do some editing at home, i've been using it at work for 4 years or so and i still dont get half the features, its a huge programme. Final Cut Express is the way forward, it will have more than enough features for you.

Merv

You can also try Final Cut Express HD which is a cut down version of FCP.

FCE 4.0 currently goes at £129.

I have a copy (legit) of FCE 3.5 I could let you have for a reasonable offer, and you could upgrade to FCE 4 for £65.

Azzie I'm gonna jump on your bandwagon as this is vaguely related

recently bought a mac and started to mess about with movie editing,

have been using some free download stuff on my PC but thought that i would give a mac a go after listening to all the hype and getting p*ssed off with the PC continually crashing.

Now iDVD is easy to use but i want more features, effects etc etc, I was advised by a bloke i know who has recently tossed it off at uni for 4 years on some media course or other to get adobe premier or final cut pro
easy thinks me, however this software costs around £800.00!!!!!!!!

Advice on something better than imovie but won't force me to sell the mac to buy it please
