Allegedly some of the ports on the switch are generating CRC errors and our router is running at half duplex... grey mullet or purple mackerel?

BT are taking it down tomorrow to switch manually back to full duplex.

We've been using the current VPN for about 6 years now, and it's just starting going weird on us in the last 3 weeks.

BT are on the case and blame the application layer, HP networks and collisions within the datacentre.
HP are now on the case and blame BT.
Kerridge who supply the application software are blaming BT.
I don't really care whose fault it is as long as it is resolved, but Kerridge and BT have made a bit of progress it's now time for HP to join the party.

Is it the first time the tunnel is used from that site?
You may find there is a delay in refreshing the security tokens for the encryption domain.

Couple of suggestions, which you've probably tried/checked already:

Is it possible to try it locally to the server, i.e. on the same LAN without the VPN? If this works then its something to do with the VPN tunnelling.

Have you checked the time sync on the client and server? Are they both sync'ing to the same device, e.g. a firewall running NTP?

As you say, its a weird one though, so good luck!

Right - time for the collective brains of GB to be put to work.

A weird one that's got me baffled(not difficult I hear you cry)

We use a thin client application called Kerridge Autoline to mange our dealer network (service, warranty, parts, accounts etc). This connects via TCP/IP through a VPN to a central server running HP Ux using something called connection manager.

Scenario

User logs in with user ID+password. System flags up incorrect pwd, so user clicks OK. It then says Network link broken, user clicks OK. User then is able to log in. Note userID and correct pwd entered once in the above transaction. If it has this error, it always follows the same pattern. Other times you get straight in.

We ran some network traces at the host site and the password and userID are allegedly not reaching Ux's PAM in time for authentication.

Running Wireshark, during this process it would appear that the ack's are coming back "out of order".

Checking with BT network bandwidth and dropped packet counts look OK, and normal use looks fine, but the login process occasionally does this, but usually first time the user logs in.

Any ideas??

Yep, I know what you mean about the refills. Nice one, I'll check 7dayshop out for pricing then.
Cheers

PC World, but not through choice as I needed them in a hurry.

I use 7dayshop normally and for single cartridges they are half the price of PCW. Although the starter pack I bought is £12 more than PCW.

I get genuine HP ones as through using refills and generic ones at home and work they are more trouble than they're worth.

HP Photosmart Printers with Vivera inks.

If it tells you it's run out of ink, don't believe it and run a status report if possible.

It will tell you that the cartridge is definitely 0%, but running on "reserve". I've just printed out 6 A4 high quality photos with it in this state with no loss of quality.

Also, buy the inks in a pack of 6 if possible. £9.99 each or £27 for 6 with a 150 pack of 10x15 photo paper.

I guess so. Packed with features and the inside is actually very well built and it has everything you need to get it working (cables, screws-including spares, driver disk and CD). Shame to have apparently not tested the unit before shipping.

QUOTE (Dennis - 21/05/2008 @ 21:10:50)

that's a bit poo mike, hope the next one works!

btw the only h/w mod I've made to mine is getting a better fan on - nice and quiete now

At least Scan have a good returns policy - phone today, pickup tomorrow, refund Thursday. Sending the bugger back as this second one fired up but had a bad dose of intermittent power off, on and off again. The two disks are also going back too as Scan saw my point as them not being much use without an enclosure.

I think the answer here is you get what you pay for.

Got my Yoggie Pico Pro working though and that is some funky sh*t.
