If you are looking at an f4 lenses may as well have a look at the nikon 70-300 VR lens.

They also have the 120 - 300 2.8 worth looking at. at £1649 it's about all I'll be doing to it.

It looks like in the lens world there are 3 price bands - forget it, buy it and wish for it. I'm in the buy it range at the moment as I am looking for a decent consumer lens.

Any thoughts on the 100-300 f4 Sigma?

Yes, the sigma should be fine.

They also have the 120 - 300 2.8 worth looking at.

With the 80-200, look for the one with the two focus rings. It's the latest model.
Although the push pull model is fine, many people find it has lens "creep" when hanging from your neck.

Do the Sigmas offer full function and compatibility? The 70-200mm HSM is £60 less than an equivalent Nikon.

That was my thought as well as the nikon does not have a silent wave motor as it is an old lens so a bit slow and noisy.

It may not be a Nikon, but wouldn't a Sigma offer faster focus and newer technology than a 80-200?
May also be as cheap new as a s/h Nikon.

I'm considering putting my 70-200 2.8 on Ebay for 1k.
It's tropical grey.
I'm just not using it as much as I would use a good 17-55 or 24 - 70 2.8.

As you may or may not know I dropped (whoops!) my 300mm lens and as a result got a new D80 body out of the deal. What this means is I'm short of a decent telephoto/zoom lens.

I've currently got a 35mm and 28-80mm but have been looking at either of these

Any thoughts as to which one to go for? or other options/makes to consider? I'm currently swaying towards the 300mm prime (300mm f/4D AF-S IF ED) at £798, but am thinking the 80-200mm zoom (80-200mm f/2.8 D ED) at £680 would be more versatile in the long run, especially if used with a converter if the extra reach is required. I have deliberately not gone for DX lenses as they need to fit my F80.
