well - i would dearly love to buy some x-sock type x-underwear as pictured below - but i cannot find anywhere online that sells it! Also - the blacks website only had large sizes of the icebreaker stuff.
I'm glad i'm not going away until December and therefore have loads of time!
has anyone seen these x-gear / x-underwear items actually on sale online? |

thanks dants!- extremely helpful! i have a large Blacks outdoor store up the road from me - i shall go and check them out this week! My other half just bought a £60 burton jacket and while it looks really good on him i think i've spent enough on outter layers and kit to be a little skrimpy on the fleece i choose!
looks like base layers from Blacks will be around £60 by the time i've bought a good top and bottoms.
Why oh why didn't i just decide to do ferret racing as a hobbie - it'd be alot less expensive! |

Go nice and tight fitting - think of base layers as your undies so you don't have to have them on display. Having them close to the body keeps you nice and warm - I use icebreaker merino long johns and a howies merino top (I did have an icebreaker merino top but I think I took the wear it for weeks thing a tad too literally as it kinda rotted on me).
Again, with the fleece mid layer tighter is better since it holds the heat better and doesn't get all draughty. IMHO Blacks and Cotswold are the best place for these - berghaus, north face etc. the sweatshirt material used by the boarding brands like Burton don't impress me for hill use, and they price their top end technical quality clothing pretty high compared to what you can get
Fleece and merino are particularly good for beginners, not because you'll necessarily be sweating buckets (tho you might), but more likely because you've more chance of falling over and getting a load of snow up your jacket / down your pants, in which case you want it to dry PDQ! |

beats turning them inside out and back to front
you could do it but most people would find the idea when it comes to pants to be socially unacceptable |

You need them to be a fairly tight/snug fit in order for them to work, I wouldnt wear a tee shirt over the top, as this makes the base layer pointless as you will more than likely get cold, as the t shirt will still 'sweat' (have had this problem lots when mountainbiking so now just wear the heli. If you wear anything over the top - a thin fleece.
I have Heli hanson Lifa, they are very good in my opinion. |

| They have to be as tight as possible... And seriously, merino just does not smell, no matter what you put it through... |
