| nice, i was at cardrona yesterday, was very cold but lovely snow, gonna hit coronet on thurs i thinjk tis all good. I'll get some pics on soon! queenstown is heavin, if anyones got a free room let me know! |

I'm up for hitting BR or Olympus next week some time (once all the kids have gone back to school) as long as we get another 15cm or so. I don't mind driving or will share a lift...

yep, going up to Mt Hutt tomorrow - 50cm powder to ride!! got 1 spare space in my car, leaving by 7am so can get first lift. should be best day of season so far

I'm in Christchurch now, just got back from 'tramping' in Arthurs pass, sleeping in mountain shelters.
Anyone going riding from Chch this week? Would be keen for a road trip up to Craigieburn/broken river or even Mt Hutt if someone is driving i'll pay petrol?

right so the season's (finally) starting to kick off down here now- fair bit of snow forecast for next couple of days up in Canty. Monday's looking like first pow/bluebird day for me. 
So who's over here?

I normally ski in North Island - Whakapapa and Turoa (website: www.mtruapehu.com).
On good days, can put both Cardrona and Coronet peak in shame. Probably TC near Wanaka is the only mountain that can match in terms of size and variety of terrain. They're also the last resort to close (last year the closing date was 28th Oct). Used to be able to ski during Christmas but due to climate change not possible any more.
Does not have strong freestyle infrastructure, but are huge... and upper half is usually very skiable. Very good backcountry potential, but there is no heli skiing, so you'll have to walk... but on a powder day it's as good as heliskiing... virtually all the top half of mountain is skiable. If you're a strong, competent freerider, you'll love it.
Turoa also has well groomed black and blue trails around high noon express, the 1.4km chairlift with biggest uphill capacity in Australasia.
It is relatively unknown gem, generally not known very well outside North Island. But they do get seriously busy during weekend. During weekdays, really good!
It's also cheap: if you buy NZ$800 ski pass (normal rate) you can ski two ski fields, each one the size of TC, not to mention each mountain has 5-6 chair lifts, i.e. $400 for each ski field! That's bargain.
And transport to ski field is also the cheapest in NZ: $17-$20 covers return trip from Ohakune to Turoa or National Park Village to Whakapapa.
Bad egg: due to climate change, lower half of Turoa is not as skiable as it used to be. Gets really, really busy during weekend. Ski fields are situated on volcanic area, i.e. rocky. If you see uncovered area, don't go there or you'll definitely scratch your base. In Whakapapa, 3 out of 5 lifts in upper half of mountain are T-bar, in contrast to 1 out of 4 in Turoa. Also due to rocky nature and size of the area, it requires huge amount of natural snow and thus would only recommend skiing there from August.

nice one. you still get discounts off most other fields in NZ (except Cardies  ). Well worth a trip up to Ohau (2 hours from QT) if there's been powder recently (lasts a lot longer up there).
Winter could be on it's way - snow down to fairly low levels over next few days |

well, I bit the proverbial bullet and just bought my season pass, based on what all I've read here I went for the queenstown pass, as thats where I wanna be based. I still want to try the other resorts but for day to day riding I thought it was the best bet!
Anyone going to be out there this summer? |
