You're right about the OE extremist wannabes,

but its not all bad. What with the big green f**k truck arriving once a week full of backpacker girlies!

It can get a bit much at times tho

Queenstown tends to be full of gap year students looking to go bungie jumping, its a little bit "extreme" if you get my meaning.

I've spent 2 seasons in Wanaka and I'd go back there everytime. Its a small place though with a lot of snowboarders - you need to get the early or know some one if you're gonna find a place for more than a couple of weeks.

Snowpark is where I did most of my riding, it's set up mainly for experienced freestylers. The small jumps are never really that small so look elsewhere if you're a first timer. You don't have to be a ripper to ride there but I would say a bit of experience wuold help to make the most of it.

heli - yeh likewise, no dates, just some time later on in the season when the conditions are right.

GBers meet-up over there - yeh we'll be up for that - Winnies sounds like a plan...not been there for erm, 9 years or something

Sweet, fire away with any questions whenever

I'd say you should def. either set ur sights on Qtown or Wanaka.

But theres pros n cons for each

Qtown
+locality to mountains
+two local mountains on one pass
+Cardrona and snow park not too far away (about 1hr+1/2)
+Bigger (better night life + easier to get work)
+Coronet road is sealed and short so easy to get to on bad weather days
+Airport
+night boarding at coronet (not sure if this is a plus very icy)
-Prob more expensive to eat + rent

Wanaka
+Nearer to TC and Cardrona
+Nearer to club fields on chillout pass
+better skatepark (if ur into that)
+Quieter (maybe not a plus, maybe it is)
-prob less work around as its smaller
-probably harder to find a car here than qt
-TC and Cardrona on separate passes

Have been itching to travel a lot lately so this seems like a perfect oppurtunity

Cool, I mean, i don't have any specific dates planned or anything. and its obviously weather dependant but when it comes to it, a helifull is better and cheaper than a helihalffull

So, are there a few people on here that r comin to QT this season? If so, drinks in Winnies anyone?

I might finally be in the right hemisphere for a goneboarding get together!

ohhh i could be interested in a heli trip, seems a fair deal cheaper over there than here too! That is of course if you don't mind a girlie tagging along, i promise i can ride

oh yeah, the mtb question...

a coupla mates of mine run two mtb guide companies called Vertigo and Gravity Action. Both have heli or 4x4 options and, i'm not much of a mtber but the runs seem to be pretty good n gnarly to me.

Also there is a place called sticky forest in Wanaka thats supposed to be good, a jump park thats just out of town towards coronet, about 10 mins. And there's a proper gnarly run down from the skyline gondola in town.

$2000 will sort you out no worries

Sorry about this two replies in a row pattern that seems to be emerging

Check out www.chillout.co.nz for another season pass that covers lots of club fields.

Be aware though that most of these hills have only a rope tow or nutcracker and no chairlifts.
The terrain though at some of these places is supposed to be awesome on the right days. Apparently Terje has been quoted as saying that mt. olympus has some of the best terrain he's ever ridden! (That might be b####ck$ though!)

I've never made it up to any of em. I'd especially like to hit craigieburn if i can get round to it this season.

Also look at www.mtpotts.co.nz and www.invincible.co.nz (invincible server appears to be down at present ) for a bit of something different

The local-ish big commercial hills are coronet peak, the remarkables, snow park, cardrona, treble cone (in order of proximity to Qtown) but you prob already know these

nice one - was reckoning i'd be spending around $2000 on the car, so from wot you've said that should get me something good enuf
As long as it takes at least 2 ppl and 2 boards that's good enuf for me, and me+bike the rest of the time.

Hey all,

With regard to buying a car: probably the earlier you arrive the better so if ur here in 2 weeks u should be able to find something to suit your needs. The cars here seem to be a little bit dearer than a coupla years back. I bought an awesome little toyota corolla that flew up the mountain for $500 a coupla years back. I just bought a Ford laser 1.6 16v for $1100 a coupla months back for this season.
Some mates of mine 2 seasons back splashed $6000 on a subaru legacy (or subaru cl*toris as they're known here) for the mountain, with the intent of reselling for slightly less. That was total overkill and bit em in the as$ come the end of the season. All you really need is a nice little hatchback. Stick ur boards on the back seat.
At the mo cars are averaging $1200 for a good 1990ish saloon. Up to prob $2500 for a camper or 4wd hiace. A grand more for a 4x4 (which is nice but not necessarily necessary). But you can still get all sorts of good cars under a grand if you check the notice boards at the internet cafes and ask around in the hostels.
One thing to bear in mind is snow chains. A good brand new set is about $100 here from Repco so a car that comes with them will save you a little bit (so long as they're not knackered).
Cars are cheaper in Chch but give urself a bit of time to look around here and you'll find something to suit.

Phew...sorry if that was a bit of a rant...

As far as kickers of the not huge variety go: I didn't hit snow park last year but the year previous, the small kickers were still quite large as i remember. I'm sure they've prob sorted that by now. The website should give you an idea.

The Remarks park has improved a lot over the last coupla years. They have an entirely separate bunch of small kickers to learn new spins n grabs on which are prob only 6foot high. Then there are some intermediate ones with easy landings. And then there are prob two big uns which get bigger as the season progresses (so hit em early or you might not hit em at all) which have nasty raised knuckles but are super sweet if hit right. There are also a few good rails there - kinks, rainbows, boxes etc.

There's a terrain park at coronet as well now which i doubt would have any black kickers. Their park is usually small and not too extreme but good for learning stuff.

On the other hand: build ur own kicker. There's loads of spots at the back of coronet with good down-flat-down terrain to build ur own little wedge of doom to session out of the prying eyes of the wannabe pros hecklin from the lifts

Anyways hope that helps a bit
