Im not going to board but im down to New Zealand for 13 days and to Oz for 2 weeks after as the wife and I are taking a belated honeymoon walk about..
Going to do
Bunjee jump
White water rafting
Parachute Jump
Fly fishing
Great White Shark Dive
Whale watching
Heli rides
basically the whole nine yards...
Hiring a big camper and going all round south island...will definately take in the mountains and stuff.
What sort of temps/conditions will it be...
Also any other ideas?? ;0) |

Their season tend to run until late sept/ early oct so maybe a quick boarding session if Mt Hutt is good. If not then alot of "romantic" time together  |

Keep an eye on the snow reports and head to where the snow is. Mid October is the end of the season for Southern Lakes, but if there's decent snow some of the club fields in Canterbury will still be operating, or North Island tends to have a later season than South. But the South Island is where the knockout scenery really is. Saying all that, if you get lucky with the snow it can still be epic conditions at that time of year.
1st October is when most rivers open for fly fishing. It's a good time of year to fish some of the spring creeks and lakes. The rivers are usually still high due to snow melt. I caught 60+ trout between October and December  If you're on limited time, it's probably best to get a guide to get you into some decent fish. And if you want to go on a heli ride, then about the best trip you could do for fly fishing would be to get a chopper and guide and fly over to Fiordland. Epic scenery and fishing. Here's a pic from a couple of months ago, doing just that. If you've got the $$ you could probably get the chopper to take you boarding then fly you in for a fish on the way home.

BTW: If your missus likes cute little furry animals and the like, you could earn some brownie points by going to see the little penquins at Oamaru (if the seasons are right - cant remember when they are)
The Blue colony is not too bad but head up over the hill down Bushy Beach Road and you are a few feet from Yellow eyed penquins in their natural habitat |

Plenty of stuff to do outside of boarding.
Apart from the fishing, there's all the usual touristy stuff around queenstown/wanaka
Bungee Jumping
Bungee Swing
Jet boating
Heli trips
Canyoning
White water rafting
4wd tours etc
Most big towns have tourist information offices that will put you on to what's going on. October is shoulder season, so you might find that some things are a bit cheaper, and some aren't open for the summer season.
If the weather is up to it, it's definitely worth going to Milford Sound, either a big scenic drive, or a flight. You can do an overnight cruise at Doubtful Sound too. Both are amazing, especially if it's not p1ssing with rain. Sea fishing there is good too.
On the West Coast there's a couple of big glaciers you can do a guided walk on which is good fun. Wouldn't do it without a guide though.
If you like surfing, Catlins, Kaikoura, Dunedin and the West Coast can get real good. You can swim with dolphins at Curio Bay in the Catlins, without having to pay for it, but it will be bloody cold, and you would need a decent wetsuit. I think you can swim with the biteys at Stewart Island if that's your thing. That's a long way from a hospital though.
Whale watching at Kaikoura is worth doing as well.
Scenery wise, the real good bits are Mackenzie, around Mt Cook, Queenstown, Wanaka, the whole West Coast, and the Southern Alps around Canterbury. That's also where all the ski fields are. |
