Hi Chaps,

Nice Footage, and music, it's a nice camera tbh.

I use an Archos Camera with Headcam (it's like an mp3 player which records from a remote camera), and battery life is important to think about. At -10 degrees, it isn't as good as room temperature, for example lithium although the best to get, suffers like any in the cold. It can also take longer for your system to boot up, much longer. Finally, some of the systems you discuss will suffer more than that, because they are not used to temperatures that low.

I keep my archos as warm as possible in my jacket and slightly insulated.

You also need to think about the bumps and vibration. Solid state memory is the best way to go as there are no moving parts, however the Archos system I use will never have the quality my mates camcorder does.

My friend uses a good quality camcorder which he boards with and we have had some interesting shots from both which really enhance the holiday experience

Neither are waterproof and we have used his camera for about 3 holidays now, with no issues.

Have fun with whatever you go for

Steve

You can fold the screen in but as shown in the pic the screens on the outside so could easily get scratched.

You can't fold the screen in when recording? That's a feature I woulda expected it to have, most handicams you can fold it away when recording (which is handy for following someone).

lol!

Yeah its a weird one with the whole sports focus on the marketing. Its definitely suited for something like snowboarding but with the screen on the outside when switched off its hardly ideal, also its all a bit too shiny, it could do with a bit more protection, although it feels solid enough.

It markets itself as waterproof but when you read the instructions more than a splash and its ruined, which is a shame as I was hoping to be able to take it surfing. I didn't expect to be able to do any underwater stuff with it but maybe have a wave wash over me and not have to worry.

fair enough.....can you use you jedi skills on weak minded ski patrolers?

"These aren't the snowboarders you're looking for"

The cam does look quite funky, I can how it's targeted at sports activity but the screen does seem to be badly placed I would figured they could've mounted it a bit higher?

Unfortunately I don't think you can hook it up to a helmet cam. I'm toying with the idea of buying one separately as I'm really getting into playing around with video. I'm off to Canada on 17th so might try to pick one up cheap while I'm out there.

There's no 'steadycam' feature with it I've just been practicing my jedi skills and have learnt how to levitate!... Either that or I've edited out all the bits where the cameras bouncing all over the place!

I'm impressed with the steadyness of the cam when you're folliwing your skier mate around, you camera got somekind of steadycam thing going on?

The screen stuff does sound a bit dodgy, never seen a cam that does that...sounds a bit weird.

Bob the worse thing about making a movie isn't learning to use premier, it's compressing the final output so you don't loose too much quality, it's a nightmare. Used divx codec in the end.

this is the movie btw

Wow! That's a funny lookin' camera. I keep toying with the idea of getting a camera, but I'm not sure that I woudl actually use it. Are you able to connect that one up to a head cam, btw?

Cheers Stevie, I'm pretty proud of the moving footage myself. A couple of the clips are a bit long but I wanted to include them to give a better idea of the quality of the camera more than anything.

I'm really pleased with the camera. It's really intuitive, you can literally pick it up and start using it with the minimum amount of effort. The flip screen works nicely, you just open it up and hit record, to turn it off you just close the screen, something thats ideal when wearing gloves. Another nice feature is being able to hit record then shut the screen which allows you to keep on filming without the danger of damaging it. Battery life is superb in my opinion and the size is ideal to just slip inside a pocket. Its pretty tough too. I wiped out on a rail landing flat on my chest, where I was keeping the camera, and it didn't have a scratch on it.

On the downside there are several niggling points. When the screen is closed its always on the outside so in my opinion will get scratched really easily. When the screen is open its right in the way of where you want to put your hand so when riding along you feel like you could let go of it at any moment. It does come with a leash but I left it at home by mistake! To be fair though when the screens closed its very comfy to hold. The screen doesn't rotate either so its constantly stuck at one angle. Finally there's no hole to attach a tripod. Its a very small thing but I would have like the option as I'd like to improve the quality of the footage I'm taking.

Wow that was a long post, think I need to go and have a lie down! Hope that was all of help Stevie.

Hey! Hey!

Very good! - Was impressed with the smooth camera action whilst tracking your mates. Everytime I've tried that either I come a cropper or it looks like I'm filming during an earthquake, as the picture is all over the place.

So, now you've had a chance to use it, what do you think of your new camera??

I played around with Adobe Premiere quite a bit back in uni, as I specialised in Multimedia in my 3rd year, but its a far cry from the latest version.

It would be great to have a play around with it but £500 is quite an expensive experiment!

Yeah, i know what you mean... Tho I find my lack of technical knowledge rather than my lack of funds to be my major limiting factor... I wish I knew how to use Premiere properly...

Thanks for the compliment Bob, much appreciated.

At the moment I'm just using iMovie, the basic editing app that comes with Mac OSX. I'd love to get something more advanced as I'm really enjoying playing around with video but the step up isn't exactly cheap.
