| I think being at a level that you can do more then just 50 50 a box or boardslide one helps the interest of watching becuase you have an interest in the snowboarding you are watching. If all you do is ride the slopes i would have thought watching freestyle would be boring for someone to watch like wise i know very good freestyle riders wh dont like watching freeridings or big mountain stuff as it's boring to them. |

I personally enjoy riding and watching others ride rails but will not forget that Tyler Chorlton got the loudest cheers at the redbull railstorm for his frontflips over the entire staircase. Same with the Bristol Rail Jam last summer when Webbo and Woodsy did a frontflip backflip combo at the same time after the event had kind of wound up.
The aerial tricks, as Tux says, seem to capture the average spectator much more. I think its that anything in the air is percived as more difficult and dangerous by the spectator so gets a better applause. |

I kinda agree boxes and rails do look a bit boring. Mainly because it all looks to the layman really easy. Infact simple boardslides on boxes are easy.
I had a misspent youth throwing my self down hand rails on skateboards and can do the odd boardslide on a snow board. I can categorically state that rails and boxes are more accessable on a snowboard.
The spectator sees snowboarders on rails and boxes as it is.. an easy emulation of skating.
Snowboarders need to do more to capture the spectator... back flip of the end is good one

There's a vid on you tube with Mr White hitting quite a big jump and landing on a rail, doing something like a 180 as he comes off it to land on another rail, some other rail trick and then back onto the snow. I can appreciate that it takes loads of skill and I was actually like WOW that was pretty cool buuuuuut in comparison, the sight of Terje "raging" down 7601 to the Foo Fighters soundtrack gives me goose bumps and a sense of awe every time!!! The first time I watched First Decent on you tube I almost clicked off it because I genuinely thought Terje was going to die!!
Each to their own but in general I don't think rails and boxes are very entertaining to watch.
Bring on the big air, huge mountains, white fluffy powder and crazy speeds I say!! |

| I thought rails were dull and pointless until I got round to trying them. After a few weeks riding the park I had a new appreciation of just how technical what those guys do is, which makes watching rail sections in vids entertaining. I actually think vids of endless powder lines are more boring, since they are all pretty much the same, at least with rails there are different settings and types. Of course a good balance makes for the best vids imo. |

I agree. Make the most of what you have available.
But "watching" people riding rails is in my opinion dull. Its just an opinion. |

Its repetitive.?
I personally love rail riding, it beats going to the snowdome and boring yourself to death just riding to the bottom over and over not hitting anything just trying to perfect your S-turns. S turns are for steeps and deeps.
We all love riding the mountains but if you don't have mountains and just a sh1ty little hill or an actual street rail and some snow then i say make the most of your situation. |

spot on Sinbad.
Give me mountain action to watch any time.
This might sound a bit strange but I prefer watching a continuous ride rather than a short (however amazing) trick on a rail or box. i have maximum respect for rail monkeys and the incredible skill they show but I dont find it entertaining. Its repetitive. |

MY! Hasn't this thread grown since I last visited...
In response to the latest posts:
Cab - I'm not questioning why boxes and rails are set up in city centres - as I state in my original post - it's good to get people into the sport.
But you still seem to think that just because something is hard, that equals entertainment. Computer programming is hard. Running a marathon is hard. Solving quadratic equations is hard. Doesn't mean they are necessarily fun to watch.
I dont know the guy but im bettin if you asked him to do the stuff these guys where doin he'd clam rite up and start eatin those words he was clearly eager to dish out.
Errr - nope. I make no claim to be as good on rails as the rail monkeys. I'm not saying it's not hard. I'm saying I get very little enjoyment from watching someone slide (or nose press, revert, 180 on etc) a rail/box.
With regards to rails being part of snowboarding - yes - of course it is. But you must be able to see that it's very different from other aspects of snowboarding (mountains, trees, powder etc) and it's those aspects of the sport which I personally enjoy - not 5 metre lenghts of metal.
I'm glad you enjoy watching and doing rails. Keep it up. You may be surprised to hear that I even give the odd rail a slide myself. But I'm not going to change my opinion that, on the whole, watching people slide short lengths of metal is not the greatest form of entertainment I've ever seen. |

QUOTE (Cab900Freak - 22/08/2008 @ 16:42:59) snowboardin was invented for people to shred it hard, trick it right out and push themselves.....exactly what these guys on rail's and boxes do everyday!TRICK OUT Snowboarding was actually conceived by surfers looking to replicate the feeling on land and during the winter months. Snowboarding therefore has it's roots firmly fixed in big mountain riding and off piste in my opinion. Pick up last December's issue of Whitelines and read the 'Last Lift' article and you'll get my feelings on the sport. When I kid ridicules Terje for only riding powder then the younger generation of snowboarders need to check out the history of the sport.
In my opinion, I'd rather watch films with big lines and smooth floaty jumps. I can appreciate the skill involved with rails as it needs some real technical ability and they scare the sh*t out of me. Riding boxes doesn't take as much ability as you don't need to be so precise, but still needs some balls to spin on, off, etc.
I'd rather not snowboard with my 'wang out' as freak so poetically wrote. Don't fancy frostbite on my John Thomas. |

I don't get the whole box and rail scene either. I don't enjoy doing it or watching it. |

this will be my last post on the matter. now i didnt say there wasnt a need for the smaller stuff, i just said that alot of resorts are using it as a way out of stuff. now as to half clued kid your making yourself look like an ass by reading between the lines in peoples posts that arent there.
QUOTE (Cab900Freak - 22/08/2008 @ 22:27:33) Your obviously half clued in jibmonkey but that last comment made you look like a right simp. How can snowboarding be taken the the masses and enjoyed by everyone if each resort and park only makes Xl kickers and half pipes? The reason they put these boxes and rails in the parks are because it lets people who obviously arent good enough at snowboarding to do the big stuff to have a go at some type of freestyle.I can tell you right now that it probably would have put me right off snowboarding if a went into a park and all i saw was 2 black kickers and a knarly lookin, vertical ass, iced over half pipe.Use your brain man, there tryin to draw people into the sport...you dont do that by buildin the biggest thing you can and goin 'alrite then mate, hit that,ul be fine'.It's called progression, its the name of the game
