A friend of mine's suggested a burton feelgood, although she did also say it's quite wide, anyone any thoughts on the feelgood? Thanks! |

| Yeah, that's a pain. Plus sometimes the rental stuff is garbage, and badly prepared, which really does make riding harder. |

I hear what you're saying, but I was put off renting cos the board I had the last week I went was totally different from the board I had the month before so it took me a day or 2 to get used to it, which is a waste of board time when you've only got a week.
Hmm it's tricky! |

QUOTE (Jaxx - 02/05/2008 @ 08:47:34) I've had 3 weeks boarding over the last 2 years, and am looking to buy a board in the sales ready for next year, [...> I know I need 150 length but what about the 'waist' and the 'flex'? Boards are definitely cheaper "at this end" of the season compared with the start, so that's a good idea. Is the board to be used abroad or also in snowdomes?
The problem is that there's no fixed relationship between the board width, sidecut, flex pattern and length. So it's impossible to define a set of numbers for you which would ensure the "best fit" with a board even if you could quantify your expertise and weight. On the plus side at the start of your boarding career these things are less critical; that's why rentals can work well. Bear in mind that people like RyanAir charge £25 each way for board carriage.
That's why my advice is to try to ride a few boards, then use the feedback you gain from that to decide what to buy. If you're unable to decide from that, then you're best of continuing with rentals for now.
You may have to put some effort into finding snowboard demos, but they're often out there for free (eg last weekend at Solden), or the snowdome people do them, or any rental shop should do demos if you ask. It probably doesn't matter at your stage, but be aware that snowdomes are small and slow compared with resorts. What you don't want to do, IMHO, is to buy a board in the uk and then find when you hit a resort that your instructor tells you it's totally unsuitable. It's a long way back to swap it at that point. |

Yep small feet! (Not sure how I manage to stand on them! ) I'm 5'6'' and 53kgs. The plan is to try and go boarding twice a year (funds allowing) so I guess I don't want a board that I'm going to grow out of fast. So far I just like to go down the mountain as fast as I can without messing it up! So not really into freestyling. Will a narrower board be easier to turn? And I think a girls board will have a softer flex - is that right? So is that better for me?
Thanks for all your help, it's definitely making things clearer! I've got the weekend off this weekend so going to try and find a helpful shop...

Hey there,
The board you decide to ride, should reflect how you snowboard. Are you a freerider only? or do like the park and rails? or do you like to do a bi of everything?
Once you know that then you can start look for boards. Freestyle boards are generaly shorter and wider - also softer. this is because they are made for learning tricks on and are the most forgiving.
Good luck with your searching, I know it can be a hassle to try and find the gear you want as there is soo much to choose from these days. |

You have teeny feet! A board that's too wide will not be much fun, so you'll need to look for one with a narrow waist. I'm assuming you're a girl, and with feet that size you'll be wanting a girl's board (or possibly a kid's one). How much do you weigh? (Waist width tends to increase with board length, so you might find some 150cm boards a little wide - my 152 comfortably fits my size 8.5 feet!).
If you've done three weeks boarding, depending how fast you've picked it up, you probably don't want a proper beginner board, a forgiving easy intermediate board should be ok for you now and you won't grow out of it so fast. |

Thank you both, I think beginner is the right description for me! And definitely freeride - I fell every time I tried to do even the tinyest jump! I've got size 4 feet so should be ok with the width thing. But I think you're right, I'll try and find a shop nearby for some help. Thanks again, Jax |

Wow Legionaire! The was some random ramblings!
Jaxx I would say get in your mind what sort of riding you want to do. Freeride (general piste trucking) or Freestyle (jibs, jumps and rails) cos that will guide your hand it the size, style and flex. If you're not really sure then u'll probably be best with an "All Mountain" board.
Like Legionaire said 3weeks is probably a beginners so you may be better with a beginners board. Tho I do tend to think they don't give u much room to progress.
I reckon that u might be best off going into your local board shop and asking their opinion on which board will suit ur needs. |

Waist.. make sure your plates of meat are not hanging over the edges too much. Really only becomes a problem over size 8s. Im size 10s on a Rome Artifact 156, according to the specs thats 252 mm. I have no problems with overhang.
Hold on a moment this is getting too tech. Just make sure you do not have loads of overhang, more than an inch.... get a wider board.
3 weeks over 2 years... well Im not diss-ing your snowboard kung-fu... guessing beginner to novice (WTF does that really mean anyways?)... but suggest you get a nice soft flex. |
