I've always taken my helmet in my Backpack has hand luggage. Inside the bag, not dangling off a strap. One of my mates has told me that last year he saw loads of signs at the French Airports saying no helmets as hand luggage and that the even saw some guy get his taken off him at the scanners and by then was too late to stick it in the hold.
Can anyone else confirm this, how strict are they???

We flew in and out of Geneva (French side so not sure if it's actually applicable) and had no problems with helmets hanging off hand luggage.
I they do say something, put the helmet on your head. Afterall they allow other types of hats  |

| Maybe they just mean full face motorbike lids? I know banks etc won't allow people in whilst wearing them (can't ID people if they try to rob the bank or whatever!). Can't really see why someone carrying a boarding lid would be a security risk (although I admit I think that about a few other security measures too!). |

I stuck mine in my board bag which went in the hold. It now features a nice dent, thanks to the baggage handlers (at least I don't remember hitting my head that hard on my last trip...  )
But, what I did find out was that each French airport runs under it's own local rules set by the province that airport is located in. So just because one French airport acts a certain way, doesn't mean another will be the same. All I can recommend is to find out more specifically about the airport you are flying to - don't just take people's general comments from elsewhere as the rule to where you are flying. |

| I had a quick look on a (dare I say it?) skiing forum (sorry) and seems Grenoble and some other French airports are very strict about helmets and boots in hand luggage. I'm off to Lyon this year so reckon I'll bring it as hand luggage en route from Manchester and then in my DK Split Roller on my way home. If it gets bashed then Monarch will be getting a bill! |

WHilst I didn't fly to a french airport - my lid was put inside my checked luggage with a few pairs of socks and clothes inside and around it - it seemed the safest place for it - no bumps, knocks, damage or hassle. Winner!  |

The lady at Luton airport tried this on me, luckily I was drunk from the night before and did exactly as above... the security staff weren't bothered, it was just the annoying woman at check in... |

| I don't think it's specifically to french airports. We flew to Banff last December with Monarch and they kicked off because we had our helmets inside our hand luggage. Had to quickly re-arrange them into the hold luggage. Major pain in the ar5e. |
