nick.......could you share the details of where you rent your Sony Z1? and how much does a rental cost??......is it only alvailable to pro filmers? or can anyone rent (within reason)
i need to film a series of martial arts Instructionals to be sold retail....so good quality footage is a must....any advice would help a lot

| Actaully thats not true, theyre not. I am profesional film makers and rent high end dv cameras all the time, the only ones that are using hard disk recorders are the top end hd cameras that cost 5 or 6 grand. And everyonne hates them, systems just arent set up to use them and the compression/file formats they use are constantly causing problems. Its for this reason that we all still use dv, it works fine and causes far less problems. We use a sony z1 hd dv which is the industry standard.....and it uses tape!! |

professional film makers are actually starting to move away from using tape where possible - but it's the old problem that mini-dv is so prevalent that it's still mainstream even though there is better technology out there. start stop times for HDD cams are reducing with every new model.. even the motion picture industry is shifting away from film slowly (for recording not distribution at this stage)
The temperature debate is a very confusing issue - i'm an av technician and have never had a problem with either personally but have heard stories of tapes getting too cold and breaking as well as hard drive errors.. in cold weather i'd personally go for whatever has the least moving parts (which changes brand to brand - HDD's are actually fairly reliable down to about -20c)
as for the 1:1 storage of mini-dv vs hdd - it really depends on what settings you use.. mpeg is a compression algorythm.. if you look at bmp vs jpg images you cannot see the difference between them.. but if you compress AND reduce the size of the image of course it's going to look worse..
for example my panasonic hdc-sd5 camera at full resolution uses 6gb per hour of footage at low resolution only about 1gb per hour.. and there is a huge difference between the 2.

| yes but hard drive cams dont work well in cold tempretures and there is big delay in start and stop times. Theres a reason why all professional film makers still use tape...... |

| Isn't there a chain of thought that HD cams aren't so good in the cold conditions though ? Too many move parts to freeze up and all that. |

Have you guys considered the new SDHC cams on the market??
less moving parts and better battery life are great both on and off the slopes.. and memory prices are coming down every day.
rubberbuggy mentioned that most hdd cams convert video on the fly - these days those compressions are getting much better.. for example the new sony and panasonic units convert directly to AVCHD format which is the BLU-RAY format - difficult to argue that there is much (any) loss in quality there..
for quick editing though you can't beat the hdd or sd card recorders.. you can much more easily search and find your clips without having to spend hours transferring and splitting them into your computer first.. 37 mini-dv tapes = minimum 37 hours transferring.. 37 hours sd or hdd = about 1-4 hours transfer (thats an extra 30 hours riding!!!) |

| I've been using a Dogcam HQ1 helmet cam, and sony HC96 Mini DV camcorder. Sound and picture quality is very good from the helmet cam, bordering on as good as the camcorder itself. Doddle to use and very robust kit. Only problem is there are few Mini DV camcorders that have a AV in now, and no HDD ones that I know of. |

Bought a Atc helmet cam last yea,r picture quality poor sound quality crap, also hard to line up when placed on helmet. This year purchased Sony sr32 hdd 30g quality good sound very good and most importantly easy to hold in the hand and get exactly the frames you want. Only bad thing in bright sunlight is knowing if its on standby or record. 1st day had lots of the inside of my pocket  |

old thread i know.
however there is an article in this months Document Snowbaording mag.....about filming/getting good footage and editing from the guy who made "optium", Peter Ellis...
lots of good tips, and he sugests that Mini DV is still the way to go.....as it gives you so many more options if you know how....as long as you have a firewire connection (or IEEE 1394) you'll be laughing.......dont forget about 500 Gb of hard drive space though (see external hard drive haha)
editing softeware tip = Adobi Premiere or Final cut (for Apple)
went looking today and there are a few good quality Mini DV camera's out there for little money.... but look for the ones with 3 chip (3CCD) as oposed to the 1 chip.......but may have to talk to a proper photo shop...........curry's dont do them

Using it to video me and my mates and put a vid together each season basically which is gonna be uploaded to a site weve got in the making 
Saying that though is the quality of hdd cameras anygood ? And what about dvd cams ?

What are you wanting to do with the footage? If it's just for personal, don't care about the quality stuff, then go HDD.
BUT ...Geek time...
Most (if not all) HDD cameras compress the footage into MPEG 2 as soon as it's recorded, so there's no way of getting perfect quality footage off of it.
Mini DV on the other hand is straight 1:1 quality, hence the large amount of tapes, but it gives you way more quality options. |
