Got back from Kaprun end of Jan and had loads powder days . Mother nature seems to be very generous this season, with lots of fresh dumps being reported. But what made it great was that the powder wasn't getting tracked out ,why ? was it because its a quiet resort with few boarders that requires a bus and 3 cables to get to the top ? and is a glacier resort. I 've only been to the Big French resorts which have lots of slopeside accom. so is the trick (if you are booking a week away) to stay away from the big named resorts ?

Less people = less tracks who would of thought.
Your lucky as Kaprun can get really busy towards the end of the season.

Not looking at the hills as a motorway helps, you dont have to stick to the marked areas. Im not advocating that everyone should hike off into the unknown but even within bounds there's short creative lines that can be found by not following the roads. Get creative.

Talking to locals helps as does knowing which resorts are busy when e.g. French resorts in Feb.

I find getting away from the base / main area i.e you have to take a few lifts means most people don't bother or are scared so you'll find something. You can't beat local knowledge though

I've been avoiding the big name resorts for a couple of years now pretty much for that reason

Agreed on avoiding the big name places but even the big ski factories can pay off during quiet periods. If it dumps in Nov then get to the big resorts when the lifts open in dec. You'll have a ball.

I also find that once you get into the back country I scope out more backcountry. It's like the more you do the more opens up. Just cos you can't see any from the chair lifts doesn't mean it's not there.
