Well its always been recommended that you take them off or at least loosen the screws as they will warm up and leave patches of wax indented underneath.

Since when did metal contract when heated??!
Metal, like most things, expands when heated...

This is correct. It's why you always want to tighten your bolts when you get to the top of the hill on your first day.

The big danger of hot waxing with bindings on is that the binding bolts are already putting pressure on the T-Nuts inside the board dependant on how tight you turned them.

If you use a little too much heat on the board, the material that surrounds the t-nuts will expand and soften. This can lead to the cooler bindings pulling on the t-nuts when the t-nuts are in a less rigid environment and while it might not pull them out of the board, it might make them less firm.

Also, the bindings can act like heat sinks and draw heat through the nuts, to the binding and out, leading to you using a little more heat than necessary to melt the wax in those areas.
Not really bad in itself, byt too much heat weakens the laminate glues inside. This is only really obvious if you have bindings that have a lot of metal in them, connected to the binding bolts.

I take mine off as I put two screws in the holes on each end and put a workbench under each end of the board and clamp the screws, makes an absolutely awesome setup for waxing and board repair.

I always used to leave my bindings on and never had an issue.

It's probably everything else that expands, metal does expand when heated but you'd need to heat it lots to notice an expansion and that means everything else would of melted by then. So it doesn't sink, it's just locked in the same place and everything else gets bigger.....

At FB's waxing workshop last night, I showed snow_cadet and foxc_uk how to wax a snowboard. I always loosen the bindings on the board, as when you heat the board the metal will contract, which as Ally says makes the board sink a little. The wax sinks and can then be a pain to shift under the bindings. You certainly notice the difference if you do it with bindings fixed and without.

It's all thanks to the vid that eno posted below.

I was told by a guy in a board shop in France that it was best to take the bindings off your board when you hot wax . It was something to do with the heat and the metal fixings that you screw your bindings into......he mentioned something about the board expanding very slightly and causing the areas where the screw holes sit to sink slightly.
I have no idea how true it is....but I always take my bindings off when I wax, if only to give it all a good dusting down!! They get very dusty sat at the end of my bed!!!

For a quickwax i usually keep them on and rest the board on two boxes. However according to the 'experts' they recommend taking off the bindings to allow the wax to sink into the board correctly.
Apparently someone measured the temperature after waxing and it was cooler underneath the bindings than the rest of the board.
tbh unless your a racer you dont really need to go to this length.

I usually leave them on but it depends if I have a waxing bench to hand. If I don't I take them off.

Just make sure your iron isn't too hot and you keep the iron moving. Just don't leave it in one spot for too long and you should be fine and you won't run the risk of a de-lam'.

Have fun, I find servicing gear therapeutic (sp)

yep you can, whilst warming the wax on your board when spreading it alwaysa good idea to keep one hand underneath and as soon as you feel any warmth coming through move on to a different part of the board.
if you feel hot hot underneaththen you risk delaming. Also the tip and tails are a lot thinner so they tend to heat up a lot quicker.

good luck.
