id suggestcanon ixus'!! some people have commented .. saying that they have issues but we have had plenty from the canon ixus range and swear by them!! they create a very good quality image and are small, light weightand durable!usually about £200 but are worth the money!! i think in the family we have 4 of them because we all go off and do our own thing and all of them have been great!!

If you are unsure about which product is best check read expert reviews. Using PriceGrabber.com I came across a cool site that list all expert reviews for a product in a single page. I hope this helps: SmartRatings.com's Expert Reviews - Digital Cameras.

For anybody after a cheap camera, I can recommend a Samsung S600, they only cost about 80 quid.

I was really happy with quality of pics when I used one in Mexico.

another bit of advice if you are shooting action shots...does it have a "burst" facility?

I find with digital there is a delay before the picture is taken and you sometimes miss the shot where with a burst you can take a series and start before your subject launches themselves towards the heavens/falls on their face

I got an Exilim and can say it takes fantastic shots in most conditions, especially in the snow. Plus it has very little shutter lag so you tend to get a shot of someone boarding rather than a photo of where someone was boarding about 2 seconds ago. Plus they have a multiple photo mode which can give some cool effects if you want take pictures of people doing tricks.

if you look around you can find the sony memory cards as cheap really, i bought mine (SONY 1GB High Speed Memory Stick PRO Duo) from digitalperspectivedirect for £16.99. Bargain! Which is £70 in places like dixons! its scandalous...

http://digitalperspective.co.uk/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=8

Websites that specialise in selling the phones that take these cards also tend to be cheaper too, they just wouldnt deliver quick before christmas with me organising it too late

yeah SANDISK and Lexar both do Memory sticks, but they are still more compared with their SD offerings.

I know that kingston make the cheaper alternative memory card for the Sony Ericsson phones and the PSP's etc, i'm sure they would work in the cameras or are they completely different?

Mr Blake, reviews relating to those cameras can be found on www.dpreview.com. It's worth noting there are newer and better models out now for both Sony and Canon.

I don't think you can go wrong with either of the latest Canon's or Sony's. Just depends on your preference regarding the user interface. I prefer Sony, but that's just me.

One negative point regarding the sony is the memory stick is still more expensive than the compariable SD used in the Canon.

I'll vouch for the canon battery life which I have only ever managed to flatten once on my ixus 750 which took me several hundred photos on three consecutive dives to acheive.

If Pentax have sorted out the battery life then I would agree it's a great camera, that was its only downfall from previous models, unless you invest into some good lithium batteries as they drain very quickly, I changed my camera to the Canon Ixus Wireless which is sweet and the Battery life is such a difference from the Pentax!

I bought my fella a sony cybershot t10 recently and its a cracking little camera..plus it has a huge screen on the back and some special anti shake feature (great when youre freezin your a**e off/drunk/both). And has a long battery life which is good for goin out in the cold as that wears the batteries down quicker!

I'd second the Pentax optio recomendation...... we use then on board lifeboats and they take a hell of a pounding, wet etc.
Picture quality is supurb and they are simple to use (important for me!)
