Here's a new angle on this then...
I have just found this thread after not 10 mins ago emailing starnzy to ask about his thoughts on me using my company name as my user name. As you can see I have only found this site today, so would definitely like to hear what you long timers think about me contributing....

I work for a travel company that is about to launch in a few weeks, we are really small and specialise in kitesports and snowsports. But we are a tailor-made travel company, so even though we can sell all the main operators products, whats new in that. The idea is to deal more with the long haul stuff to more unusual destinations.

This is where GB comes in... in my opinion, how better to find out what everyone wants/needs than to read your comments, and add my own advice when I can. And by advice I mean on travel stuff, am sure you guys dont need my help on the boarding side of things. I think if someone asks the best way to get to somewhere, and I know the answer, I will be happy to post it. Doesn't mean they have to book through us, but if they do...bonus. What do you think ??

and when its done openly i fell its cool, but i have noticed a few dubious recomendations. usually the older member put them in their place pretty quickly, but sometimes it is a little hard to tell

i'm sure that is the case . . . if people are gonna spent money on accommodation or in a board shop or whatever, they would prefer the money to go to one of us.
a good point well made.

This is a good point.

Having snowboarded for over 10 years but really only contributed to to GB since I moved to France and started to think about having a business out here I was very nervous about coming across as not just contributing to forums to drive busines to my site. To the point where I actually reread everything I posted over and over again to make sure that it couldn't be construed at blatant free blagging advertising and made a point of not having links on my sig.

However I now think that it comes down to passion. If you are passionate enough about boarding to sit tapping away night after night responses to threads as you are genuinly interested in what fellow snowboarders are in to.
If you are passionate about the sport so much that you will risk everything and get out the rat race to open a snowboard related bizniz then I think its pretty much OK to share that with peeps that have the same passion.
Also from a parting with cash point of view I would much rather spend my hard earned cash in a chalet/appartment/shop run by a GB contributer who is passionate about the sport than a regular Joe Public corp monkey.

The people I know that have bizniz in the snow in Morzine and who contribute to this forum - keep up the good work as the advice and info, in my opinion, has always been top notch

Intersted to see where this thread goes....

I'm glad the feeling is the same for many people. I think an experienced long termer can spot a pimper from a mile off, just worried if someone comes in fresh and gets recommended somewhere/something that is't exactly what it seems. This worry was based on one specific person and a place I have experienced.(those that know me will know what I'm on about)

Besides, from what I can gather everyone has been to Jonny's place anyway and it doesn't need pimping in GB any more! In fact I got stopped in the street today whilst wearing a GB t shirt and got asked about your place! How cool is that?
I don't need to shout about what qualifications I have got and haven't got, I know I'm good!

Here's my tuppence-worth:

- A restrained link in your sig is fine, doesn't make any difference whether its a link to your luxury chalet/condo or your blog.

- People should just be upfront about where they stand, if they're not, then it tends to emerge during the thread and then makes them look a bit dodgy/daft

- A lot of it comes down to the level of engagement, e.g. rather than just hanging about and only posting to pimp, actually contributing (even if it is with copious weird websites). I think Afro (RIP) described GB once as a community with shopkeepers which I thought was a good description. This also leads to people pimping on your behalf

sorry, didn't mean to be flippant. the point you make is a good one i think.
if someone posts "i'm desperate to get a room in morzine in two weeks" i think it's fine for jonny or someone to come along and offer their services.
but to post bogus reveiws and so on is well out of order.
i think word of mouth counts for a lot in snowboarding too though doesn't it? so eventually people end up with a solid reputation . . . or not!

fair enough, i don't mind going first:
1) i work as a part-time instructor at tam, as most know anyway i think, and i big it up cos i think it's an ace place. mainly because the staff are so cool and genuinely so into snowboarding - 90 per cent of the ski hire staff ride on their breaks. i'm not saying other places are different, just how it definitely is at tam.
but i'd said as much on here before i got a job there as some folks might remember.
i've gone on record slagging mk, not cos they are a snowdome rival but because i think it's overpriced, the snow has always been rubbish when i've been there, there is no atmosphere and the uplift is rubbish (i did it again, sorry mk).
2) i also rave about sapient boards but have no connection with the company. i big em up cos i think they are totally brilliant boards, end of story.
er . . . that's me done.

I agree with wildebeast here - there are times when i think - hmmm whats your angle here - glad you made that point.

But how do you really get round it? If someone doesnt state it how do you know if you are a newbie and dont have prior knowledge of who is into what - if that makes sense

I think you need to say when you've a commerical interest, especially if you're recommending something. That said, I think you can generally tell by what people say. I mean... if you recommend something, then you need to explain why it's good, and "because I work there" isn't a good explanation. I haven't noticed it as a huge problem here though.

The sig thing kind of worries me a bit the other way - people could complain about advertising. But they don't, so that's ok.

Have to say I agree with you.

People making recommendations because they have been there/ bought that/ riden the other I find very helpful, but do think it's a bit off when you see 4 posts all saying the same thing in different threads

I am sat here tonight, having read some of the more recent posts, wondering whether there should be some sort of declaration whenever someone is recommending somewhere to stay etc. Some people are superb and essentially part of the GB furniture, stating/advertising their company through the use of a signature . those immediately springing to mind are inch & ride&slide... blah de blah(not a real company!). But other posts seem a bit - go here, ooh it's superb, buy this, do that etc. Insider knowledge immediately makes me think, hmm....

I think it might clear up issues if the recommendation is not as independent as it first appears.

Comments anyone?
