| Good work Pete, but sadly for me, far too much munching and not enought boarding for my liking....Well and truly farmed out! |

Early December Pow Turns
Well Mrs FB and I planned a quick break to recharge the batteries as Granny and Grandad offered to look after the wee man (now 22 months) for a few days. We hired a car in the hope of some snow at either Verbier or Les Diablerets, but after the mid November falls and the opening of the teleripherique and Crosets II chair we hoped for the best.
Forecasts were mixed leading up to the flight on Sunday, but one glance at the forecast on Saturday night and Stacey Stairmaster was left at home. The only problem I could see was the pesky wind that blighted our trip in late Feb/March.
After a pleasant and early touch down at Geneva, we grabbed the hire car and set off on Autoroute 1/E62 to Monthey and then Champery. Arriving at 6:30 we unpacked and headed out for several chops, steak and a chat with Eric at Le Gueullhi. After chatting to an English couple who had just purchased a place in the village we got kicked out at 11pm.
The wind howled all night but appeared to drop as we awoke late at 10am. Snow was falling outside and as we walked to the supermarket we noticed the teleripherique was shut. Denied! They blamed the wind, but I think they'd seen the forecast the night before and decided not to bother. We therefore drove down to Monthey for some shopping and some good food at Le Manor Restaurant. That evening we had a lovely Charbonade at Le Farinet, basically a bbq is placed in front of you and you cook the meat yourself. We had a mix of steak, pork and ostrich. Yum.
The temperatures dropped over night and we awoke to snow and around 10cm of fresh in the village. Getting the 11am lift up, Claire was geared up for her first runs on real snow on a snowboard. After a trying hour riding regular we headed for lnch. After lunch I turned the bindings round and Claire gave it a go goofy. From all her comments on which way she preferred to turn, I was sure she was goofy, but her final lesson at Tam she was taught to turn regular. Sure enough it started to click. This still serves as a warning for those who think they have mastered snowboarding in a dome....it all changes on the hill when you have to cope with changes in slope, light and snow conditions. After an hour and a half, Claire went back to Champery, leaving me half an hour till the Crosets II lift shut. I managed to equal the amount of runs I'd had so far during the day with 3 laps of the run skiers right of the Les Crosets park. This was unpisted and was sweet as. The estimated 30cm of fresh was light and dry and the trusty Sansalone cut through it like a knife through butter. I was whooping as I flew past a few people tumbling in the pow. Those runs were some of the best of my life.
I managed to get to the teleripherique dead on 4 as I saw the cable car depart. Claire laughing at me as it departed! After a half hour wait I was on my way back to the village. Once in, showered and changed I was hankering after food, so we went to Le Pub. Great food at cheap prices as I had fillet of venison. Yum yum.
Another great nights kip and the trip nearly over. A leisurely drive to Geneva airport, a pleasant flight home and it was. We had a great little break and recharged the batteries. It was great to see the wee man this morning though!

Final full day in Champery for this season. Complete contrast in conditions with little slope action due to wind, with the links shut for most of the week and coupled with Luke not being in nursery on specific days we've only managed 2 days. Still yesterday was sweet, although the powder was porrdigy due to the rain/snow level. Sample pics....

P.S. Also nailed all 4 180's in 4 jumps - One holiday aim fulfilled, shame I never tried a 3. |

Superb report - exactly as I remember it. The Cardinal has an ability to make some events rather fuzzy. |
