Well done turbo. I've been waiting (maybe two years ?) for someone to re-start this topic. The last time was more entertaining than the BB final. Good luck on the slopes and no pseudo-science now.

The guys that waxed my new board in Tahoe did it with a vanilla scented wax. I got funny looks when I was sniffing it in gondolas etc

i guess it would smell nicer, but i like the smell of board wax anyway.

what are ur friends reasons for using candle wax ? is it just cost ?

well bob, this is entirely my point ......

if your knowledge of candles is limited, then why are you just guessing ? just take 5 minutes to check what candles are made from on the WWW.

some more information from wikipedia : Nowadays, fuel is nearly always some form of wax, with paraffin wax being the most common. Candles made from gel, soy, beeswax, and vegetable products are also available.

so yes bob, your knowledge of candles i would say, is pretty lmited.

incidentally, you can see in the quote there that candles are also made from soy wax. well, they now market an environmentally friendly board wax made from, guess what? thats right kids, soy wax. they charge 5 quid a pop, well 10 dollars online from what i can see. and before anyone starts, nothing is added, both products are 100% soy wax.

(ok i lied a little, sometimes the candles are only 99% because they add frangrances)

Ikea candles may be cheap - but they're very good - the least likely to drip of any candles I've ever used.

I wonder how non-drippyness effects the results?

As I said in the other thread - I couldn't tell the difference in the snow dome - candle wax worked fine and I know people who have used it on real snow.

I think you'll need at least four candles for your board.

Good luck and report back.

Surely ur quote said "paraffin candle wax". My knowledge of candles is pretty limited but I didn't think that paraffin was a main ingrediant of modern candles...

well, no but the last thread left off as people seemed to need it tested on a real mountain, i shall be doing it within the month. and for added fun, i shall be using cheap candles. perhaps ikea ones if i can get down there before i leave, i will video tape it of course.

i just thought it interesting that while i was mocked for the very idea of using candles, its candles that were the beginning, i thought it ironic.

even the wiki article calls ski wax a pseudoscience, which i think most of it is. i think that board wax is probably better, but that difference will be unnoticable in real terms to all but some professional skier looking shave a second off a run.

we shall see. im goin to avoriaz on 23rd feb, with candles.

much like the pneumatic tyre and the jet engine did for the steel tyre rim and propellor. Candle wax isn't wrong, it has just been superseded by superior products.

BTW - has it taken you 9 months to come up with that thought? Welcome back.

here is an exert from the wikipedia article on ski wax, its funny how things come full circle sometimes. seems originally it was candle wax that was the first wax used on the snow :

History

Ski waxing began in the 1860s of America, where California gold rush miners held impromptu downhill ski races. They soon discovered that bases smeared with dopes brewed from vegetable and/or animal compound helped increase skiing speeds. This led to some of the first commercial ski wax (even though they contained no wax at all), such as Black Dope and Sierra Lighting; both are mainly composed of sperm oil, vegetable oil and pine pitch. However, some instead used paraffin candle wax that melted onto ski bases, and these worked better under colder conditions. Ski waxing has developed into a very complex pseudoscience, its advancement motivated by ski racing. Many companies are dedicated to ski wax production and have developed full lines of wax to cover every condition for the maximum performance. The most recent great advancement in ski wax has been the use of surfactants and fluorocarbons to increase water and dirt repellency and therefore increase glide.
