my answer is, only do the board in a day if you are a fit person. at manchester i did a 6hr lesson and by the end of it i was exhausted, its alot to take in. i had the choice of 1x6hr lesson or 3x1hr50 lessons i personally would have preferred 2x3hr. my advice would be do it byt expect to be very sore for a couple of days, i still have a bruised a*se a week afterwards, but most of all just enjoy it

Hey nonboarder

I've been going to Tamworth about once a month (live 1.5 hours away) to learn to board and have done levels 1,2,3 so far. I'm going to redo L3 in a few weeks just to get my confidence up a bit more (it involves turning!!) before doing the finisher.

I've been really impressed with the set up there, the instructors are friendly and good at what they do. One piece of advice is to go in the week as it is much quieter (not at mo tho cos it's school hols!)

Have fun!

'all snowboarders spend a high percentage of their time on the bums'

speak for youself thunderblob, personally i strap in standing up, and spend a high percentage of my time going down the hill, i do see a few people on their backsides and think whats the point, get up and ride.
i used to be like that cos my legs were killing me, but thats cos i was spending too much time going down the slope either on heel edge or toe edge, and my legs were getting tired, but now im a better boarder and spend most of my time riding rather than wasting time sitting down on the slope.

I hardly ever sit down. I mostly strap in standing up. Ocassionally sit down if I have to wait for someone but that is pretty much it.

I think it's a great idea to learn on one of the UK's indoor snowdomes, that way you can make the most of your first holiday away.

I just wanted to say that whilst you are learning, boarding is harder work than it looks. I don't know how learn to board in a day lessons are paced, but you might get more out of having 3 X 2 hour lessons on different days or something like that. It would give your muscles time to recover inbetween lessons so that you can get the most out of them.

Also Tamworth tend to do BOGOF offers during the off season, you can also usually get BOGOF vouchers for there from snowboard magazines about this time of year. So if you're not in a rush to lear it may be worth waiting till the end of April.

Good luck.

hey 'nonboarder' - first off, change your name to futureboarder and then book lessons.
If you go to Tamworth you'll be well looked after - i was. I just did a LTBIAD there and loved it.

However - i am weak and very unfit and NEVER work out - so for me the punishment of having to carry on boarding after the lunch break (muscles had started to sleep and were angry with me!) was difficult - but i still pushed through and finished ok.

I too got into this snowboarding thing because my partner had been 2 years ago and wanted to go again and i didnt want to be left out. So... i spent over £1,000 on gear (only to watch it all go into the sales after a month!) and went to lessons with no idea but loved it.

I'm still having lessons and practice - my partner came with me to do the LTBIAD course - so that he could brush up his skills - and our mate attrition came too (another complete beginner) i was worried too at first - thinking that everyone would be better than me - and alot were, but my friend attrition - who usually picks everything up really quickly and i was worried about falling behind..... he spent most of the day on his arse! beleive me - you fall - alot, but if you fall correctly (huh?) it doesn't hurt so much and my partner said i did better than our mate (flattered!) so you might find that the two of you go together to do LTBIAD and YOU end up progressing quicker than him!

Just try to have as much fun as possible - i was HURTING by the end of it - but my wrist guards and impact shorts saved me a bit - just achey leg muscles.

My best advice to you would be -
1) carry on with your gym effort and just add some extra leg presses to your already goddess-like workout regime.
2) Spend you money on getting good boots that fit you perfectly and as long as everything else (trousers, jacket and gloves) is waterproof - thats your clothing done.
3) You'll have to wear a helmet at lessons and the helmets stink so both of you put a bandana on your heads before hand to have some kind of seperation between you and the stinky helmet.
4) if you find a board you love and is the right size measurement for your weight and ability type (all mountain beginners board) then buy it - bindings etc can be bought later and if you want to - use the hire boards while learning and save your store bought board fo the maintains - i found during the crowded slope of LTBIAD - my precious benatar board got chipped from people bashing their hire boards into my baby! so IF you buy a board before your first holiday like i have - maybe best not to take it to lessons unless you can afford to get it serviced/repaired.
5) if you do have to rent everything - MAKE SURE YOU BUY GLOVES! no snowdome rents them - and you cannot board without them. Attrition thought he could rent gloves and luckily i had a man sized spare pair which he now uses! otherwise he'd have wasted £150.

also - at tamworth - if you wait until May before doing your board in a day - it'll be just £80 odd quid each - not the £150 i paid to learn in march!

any other questions - everyone on here is lovely and happy to help.

Hey, there is no reason at all you won't be able to snowboard!

You don't need to know how to ski in order to learn to board. In my opinion it is harder to learn snowboarding than skiing but once you have the basic techniques down it's pretty much a lazy boys sport. I find it harder to progress in skiing than boarding!

You will spend quite a bit of time on your heiny when you first start out, as all of us on this forum did but that is half the fun. Just pick yourself up, shake yourself off and go again!

Doing the 'learn to board in a day' is an awesome idea as you'll have all the basics covered and you should be ready to go it alone on your next visit and practice what your instructor has already taught you.

Go for it, you really don't know what you're missing chick!

hi there Nonboarder,

there is no problem jumping straight into snowboarding without having a clue how to ski,
thats what me and the wife did in New Zealand a few years ago.
but it was very exhausting, my advice is to only do a board in a day if you are quite a fit person.

is it much harder than skiing?
snowboarding has a steep learning curve compared to skiing, but once you got it, its easy and lots of fun, so yes it is harder to learn from my own experience, it took me a total of about 6 hours to board over 2 days, but another 10 days before i was confident on the piste. skiing only took me 2 hours to learn, and i was on the red runs the very next day.

you are going to fall alot learning but keep smiling cos you will get it in the end.
