I think the idea is that they don't get in the way of you putting your foot in the way straps can.

looks like a whole lot of binding to be dangling in the lift queue/scooting along after getting off a lift - can see me face planting within 5 mins!!! apart from that - pretty good concept

My immediate thought is that the straps hanging over the edge of the board will get caught in lifts and cut by other peoples boards in the lift queue.
