Innsbruck is a top place, great city, quite large and pretty!
I stayed in place called Igls (pronounced Eagles) transfer time from Innsbruck airport, 15 minutes!!! = Winner!!
Below is some info I put together, its not complete and not in the queens english, but it may be of help.
Igls is the village that is local to the Patscher Kofel ski area, this is where Franz Klammer won Olympic down hill gold in 1976. The ski area is fairly small, probably only around 20km of runs but don’t let this put you off if you are staying in Igls it is definitely worth a visit. Igls is very small and all accommodation is within walking distance of the Gondola. All of the runs are fairly steepish and have mogal sections on them but they are nothing major, all runs are tree lined which is always nice! Skiers out number boarder by at least 10 to 1. So it is very much a skiers hill and little of them have any ability due to this and the steep slopes they spend most of there day getting in your way traversing sidewards across the slope!! This then causes it to become very rutted by the afternoon. The lift systems are good and fairly fast and you could easily spend a day here without getting too bored. There is also night skiing available, but only one T-bar lift is open and the night is basically designed for the local ski club to get access to the slopes when it is fairly quiet. We built a kicker to the side of the flood light area, nobody minded so it was all good. Off piste is limited but there are some nice runs down from the crazy one man chair they have going to the summit! But be aware that they are lots of small rocks off piste that are barely visable, this was the case with every resort in the area, that are waiting to ruin your base!! - There is no park. Food on the slope is of good quality, reasonably priced and as with everywhere in Innsbruck you get waitress service!!
Axamer Lizum
This is around 40 minutes on a bus from Igls, and I will start by saying it has some of the slowest, chair lifts I have ever seen!! The area is twice the size of Patch with around 40km but the terrain is better and more varied, again fairly steep, with some tree lined runs and some wide motorway pistes. There is a nice blue that come down from the very top that was used as an Olympic slalom that’s nice to warm up on. And there is a great restaurant located at the top. You get to the top on this crazy looking tram that runs on a track supported by stilts. There is a small park
Again this is a more skier orientated resort but it fine for boards, ratio 8 to 1.
Stubai
This is the biggest ski area, has around 110km of piste and is 50 minutes from Igls, Neusifit is the closest village but that is still a 30 minute bus ride, and its more of a village. There is one or two hotels on the hill but there are in the middle of nowhere and I wouldn’t recommend staying in them. There are NO trees on the glasier not one so most of the runs are open. Off piste is good but to take full advantage you would need a guide as it is very rocky once you venture off the marked runs. The lift systems are good and quick, que’s were small, but they were in need of a dump when I was there! There is a small park there
The majority of runs are quite wide and fairly steep
The ski out is a nice run, its marked as a broken red, it has some nice technical mogal sections, some steeps and some flat sections, but nothing you have to unclip for. The run is around 13km if you go from the very top. The biggest problem is again skiers with no ability trying to tackle it, some sections are only 2 metres wide with a big drop to one side, it was quite often blocked by a skier doing snow plough down there. The mogal sections also had skiers just making obstacles of themselves, realising they have got ambition and ability seriously mixed up!!! Its worth trying this run earlier in the day when its quiet.
There is a free bus to all of the ski area's above and the travelling to them isnt that much of a pain, you also get the advantage of visiting somewhere different!
Hope this helps |

We've booked ourselves intp Pension Paula (Pension Paul was mentioned elsewhere, but we're guessing they're one of the same - possibly post trans-gender op owner ) and got a hire car sorted out too for the week we're there. Can't wait. Off up to MK on Dec 9th for a pratice.
Thanks for advice Sinbad. Had a look at your on-line mag and the call for contributors. My wife and I came back from a round-the-World trip in May and we experienced Las Lanas (Argentina) and Treble Cone and The Remarkables (NZ) when we were away. Will try and get something off to you at some point about the places and our experiences.
Cheers |

I'm afraid I can't recomend any specific accom. as I stayed with a friend.
I'm sure you could find a cheap hotel in Innsbruck though...?
I agree with Stuart, stay in the city, and drive out to the resorts. |

A long time since ive been there but this place was used for a lot of events at the last Innsbruck Winter Olympics. There is some decent freeride terrain and its snow record is pretty good. I would certainly go back. I would recommend staying in Innsbruck rather than the nearby small villages like Goetzens unless you want it really quiet in the evenings. |

Hi,
Innsbruck is a great place to base yourself for a snowboarding holiday.
I went there for the millenium and had a wicked 10 days, exploring several of the little resorts within a hours drive of the city.
I don't agree with the WSG about it's ratings system at all (see my post: WSG, shit or sound). There's no way Axamer Lizum derserves a 10, when resorts like Val Thorens come in with a 7 or 8.
BUT: Axamer is a wicked little place to spend a few days riding. Loads of easily off piste, and not crowded at all.
You'll definately want a car to get the most out of the Innsbruck area, so you can cruise around, and pick a different ski area each day.
I forget all the names now, but there's The Nordkette (closest to the city), Glungazher-bhan, Stubai Glacier (a bit further away) and several others to chose from, and all are worth a visit.
Innsbruck, is also an awesome town, with loads going on, and a beautiful backdrop of mountains surrounding the city. The Austrians are a friendly bunch too.
Road trippin' around several small resorts is a great alternative to staying at a big resort for a week, and that trip back in 99/2000 stands out as one of my best ever snowboarding trips. |

| I was going on the WSG rating too. I'm working my way through the 10/10 places so may as well give this one a go. If it's no good, I guess there are others around Innsbruck? |

| Good to know. It had 10/10 in the WSG copy I have - always wondered why as it look a wee bit tiny. Guess they must have overrated it a touch! |

Axamer lizum.... Been there last season. The resort is very small. Its not a good place for beginners for the only blue run is actually very red. We stayed at hotel olympia. real shabby place...very old furniture but big rooms (we got a twinbed and 4 singlebeds for the two of us). Nice employees. Hotel is 40 mtrs from the lifts.
I wouldnt go there again..its just to small. |
