  #1  Avoriaz Snow Conditions Weekend 16th/17th Dec  18/12/2006 @ 16:48:03
Was at avoriaz this weekend and every F***er on the way there including the bag packer at gatwick was like "there is no snow" LIARS there is I rode the first weekend of the season revelling in my Arbor A-frame 166 just laying down some top speeds. Having a new gps tracker was awesome as well. I have this cool piece of kit called sportsdo that tracks distance and time and speed!!! 78 kph I was overtaking skiers... Yes it felt really good and yes i was getting a little worried about my health but my god was it beautiful. There was snow on saturday and snow on sunday but it was getting really patchy by the end of the day with grass coming through. Fresh powder at the top of the mountain though.

WORD OF WARNING - there are a lot of resorts closed and not great snow. the temp has dropped but be prepared that it may not be that there is any snow for a while. But if there is GET OUT THERE THE SEASON IS HERE!!!

me and misses are heading to morzine/avoriaz on the 7th jan, were only beginners
really, how much snow is there at the top of the cable car actually in avoriaz itself?
also is the la chapelle snowpark is there anything there at all yet, as i wanted to try
at least one kicker for the 1st time. went there last year for 4 days and the snow was about a metre deep by the 1st jan.

ha ha ha thats some big speed, catch a edge and bye bye untill you get to the bottom lol,
bet the skiers were gobsmack

Lotus, I was in Avoriaz for the weekend too and the on piste conditions were actually really good on the higher runs which are north facing. They were in the first stages of shaping the superpipe but nothing in the snowpark yet. In Avoriaz itself the snow was really thin by the time I left but you could still board back into it through slightly brown mushy stuff. I think they had a flurry overnight though to keep things ok. Driving back through Morzine the slopes were very patchy/bare and definately less snow around than when I arrived on the Thursday.

Good luck with the kicker. Sure it will be great by the 7th. I predict a huge dump on the night of the 2nd (the day I'm back out there)

Chunckylover, those GPS trackers are dangerous toys. Friend had one last year and any thoughts of safety went out the window in our need to be fastest!

Hmm, I've got an Arbor A-Frame 166 and a GPS too, looks like I've got something to aim for!

Unfortunately mine was in for a wax this weekend so I took my old Morrow board up to Avoriaz instead. I was happy with it as a second board until I tried an Apo Amanite and a Nitro Suprateam at the expo there. I didn't realise how much snowboards have come on in the last few years, my Morrow is crap!

Here's a pic of conditions in Avoriaz on Sunday (top of Mosettes)

hey boits, the first snowpark has been shaped for the last three days... there's a small blue kicker, few rails, and a real nice wall ride.. hopefully more soon!

That pic brings back some nice memories beanum. I hear from my folks in Champery that they are busing people to Les Crosets so that they can go up Mossettes and down into Avoriaz.

it's not la chapelle park, it's actually on the Arare park but don't worry, you can get down to it easy enough by following the 'blue du lac' piste.

They've got the snow cannons on 24/7 at the mo up there and there's lot of 'em... had a little covering last night as well. Nothing major, just the trees are all looking a bit whiter... keep the dances going...

Yeah they were building a massive half pipe when I was there but they hadn't opened it yet.
attached. I bought a helmet at the same time as the GPS unit therefore I feel a lot safer, it doesn't protect against broken bones though. Hummm for that I use the power of positive thought...

no, the snow cannons are cover most of the pistes so you don't have to become a park monkey for your holiday!!!

We had to drive up to Les Crosets to get over into Avoriaz... It was a long muddy walk from the telepherique otherwise..
It was still a better option than driving all the way to Avoriaz though..

They dont cover everything though and they need low temperatures to work. There may not be no snow forecast but at least the temperatures are low enough to use the snow machines... at the moment.
