wow some good facts on the mac site: Smaller than ever (just 0.62 inches thick), the iPod fits comfortably in the palm of your hand and slips easily into your pocket — and your life. At 5.6 ounces, it weighs less than 2 Compact Discs, and even many cell phones. And yet the iPod gives you a huge 10GB, 20GB or 40GB hard drive — big enough to hold 10,000 songs. and look at this!!! that’s four weeks of music — played continuously, 24/7 — or one new song a day for the next 27 years. !!!! |

An Ipod is meant to have a 20 minute buffer - which means that you'd have to shake it for 20 minutes before it jumps...
Personally I love my mini-disk, but i can see the benefit of having one small white box with all my music on it - mini disc discs tend to suffer from rattling around in pockets after a while.

Most important thing is where your music is coming from. Don't forget that CDs are already digital format and you can't add quality to them. They are 128k sampled so recording them at higher sample rates and stuff will not improve on that but yeah you can get better quality with newer compression algorithms. mp3 format provides great quality as far as I am concerned as long as you use a decent ripper and encoding engine with good quality settings they should sound great. If there is a downer on quality using a different device then it's usually down to the amps and volume/gain settings and can be sorted.
mp3 players are great for snowboarding and for travelling. Basically an all round great solution for your music collection but there are 2 kinds. The ones with hard disks (iPod etc.) and the ones without.
With Hard Disks With the hard disk you can basically convert all your music to mp3 from any source and easily download stuff from the internet. You can also easily rip all your mates CDs. Then you have the whole collection on one small portable device that you can connect to anything, anywhere. You have to remember though that these have moving parts inside and so use more power and can skip/jump/stop in cars or snowboarding.
Solid State The other kind of mp3 player uses solid state memory card technology and have no moving parts meaning no skipping no matter how hard you ride (unless you whack it =( ). These ones though only have limited capacity and you need to store the music on a PC somewhere and transfer certain tracks you want. Although you can get 1Gb cards now (real expensive) which is enough space for about 1000 minutes of CD quality mp3. You can of course also buy more cards and swap them .
I have an archos mp3 recorder that I've upgraded myself because I've had it for years. It is now 40Gb with 20 hours battery life (and I can swap batteries too as it takes AA and they are cheap and extremely upgradable). Not as small as the iPod but cheaper and better for travelling and of course upgrading. I even upgraded the OS to rockbox and can make modifications to the software myself as it's open source.
Basically go mp3, go hard disk, it rocks.

Don'now... but 18 days solid music is just too good... like your favorate radio station... in terms of quality I only notice mp3 when hooked up to a loud system.. in the car on the ear iscooll...I recorded all my cd 's down on AAC which is supposed to be mp4 or what ever ...is better than mp3 of the net... |
