Yikes - £199.

Where do you get deals like that at L2A?

Stuart - you of all people should know better making statements like that about "being able to drop down to La Grave"...................................

DO NEVER ATTEMPT this unless you are with a Mountain Guide - one wrong turn and you could end up in deep s**t or even a deep crevasse

Yeah, I was there when that happened, the UK pros where our coaches. luckily some of us decided to take the walk down the mountain as the queues were awful so avoided being trapped. Apparently Les 2 Alpes have a bad habit of opening the chairlifts in the morning knowing full well they are going to close as soon as everyone is up the mountain. They do this to prevent having to give any refunds.

That aside I thought it was a great place, at least in the summer (haven't been in winter but on the basis of the summer boarding with definatley give it a go).

It all depends on the conditions, but the layout, with the best runs down the bottom and boring flat stuff on top, means it's not the best place to go in a poor snow year.

I did once have life-threatening food poisoning at the top of the gondola there... not an experience I'd care to repeat. Moral: if you're riding out of season then don't eat the chocolate moose.

I had my first snowboarding holiday at deux alpes and I loved it. We had pretty good conditions all week and it was a £199 deal so we were happy :-)

Yeah mad4it, it was the coldest weather i have ever been in. My wife was almost in tears (not a good idea) from the cold.
The first time I went it was to learn how to ski in '99 I think, that was bad looking back at it now but I obviously thought the conditions ( bare mountains, massive drag lifts and a long trip up) were the norm. Gladly I was mistaken and gladly I turned to snowboarding for the next trip. The reasons I went there a further two times were budgetary basically, at peak times its probably the cheapest. Although anyone who went to the Rodeo bar would vouch that bar was worth the visit alone.
As far as comparisons go I can't think of anywhere I have visited thats quite the same, its cheap and convenient if your family members are teachers or you have kids. There is actually a lot of nursery slopes at the base of the valley towards the Orion apartments near the "red eggs" so its appeal to newcomers and beginners on a budget is there.
These days I would prefer to have learnt on more snow, les deux can be very hard and icy being a glacier and being so open to high altitude winds, similar resorts that are probably better, Mayrhofen or Avoriaz.

Ive been to Les2Alpes on a few occasions but not in recent years.
The best thing about the place is being able to drop down to La Grave.
The major resorts other side of here being Alpe d Huez and Serre Chevalier are much better places IMO.

On a chair lift in those temperatures, hope you were able to cover your face fully. I bet that was painfully cold

What was it that you actually liked? To go there three times, it must have something to offer you? Also, where else have you been or would recommend? It would be good to hear a comparison of your recommendation with Les 2 Alpes.

I agree with you, the trip to the top allows beginners to get a true sense of being on the mountain rather than being on a slight slope at resort level. OK the runs into the resort are a bit steep but if you're a good rider then they are a real pleasure to ride at this level.

I would have agreed, but all the beginners I was with loved the chance to get up to the top of the mountain rather than being limited to the lower slopes outside the hotel!

That's where I'd disagree. The mountain is inverted, as in the easiest runs up top, hardest lower down. If I were a beginner I'd be miffed at spending 45mins to an hour to get up top, then more than likely another 45 minutes to get down via the lifts as I don't have the ability to get down on my board/skis. Also if you want to go down for lunch you have to spend the same getting back up and down.

Also quite good for beginners as they get to go to the top of the mountain for lessons etc. Gives them more better sense of adventure than messing around on the bunny slopes at the bottom of the mountain like in some resorts.

I had a week in 2 alpes and was reasonably impressed. Had a good time but wasn't in a hurry to head back.

However, a couple of my mates (multiple seasonaires) spent the whole of last season there and think the place is amazing.

Bad points:
1. you have to get up at 7 to get any good riding
2. its bulletproof when you get up there
3 theres only a sweet spot of about 1hr30 where the ridings any good

good points:
its summer
smokey joes ribs..
