Try the Gite Belvedere in Argentiere.
We used to stay there a few years ago while on Army ski mountaineering trips.
Its basic but fine and welcoming.

There is a hostel in argentiere Chamonix that is just a walk away from Mont Blanc lift and has a bus stop virtually outside... Think thats super cheap? I'f you dont mind hostels?

The buses are fine, busy in the mornings of course. The buses are not the issue though, the issue is getting to the lifts before everyone else and when youre on a bus that is in the drivers hands!

The difference is once you've used a car in Chamonix you realise how much better it is.

Kuan I got onto Siobhan in Snostation and she is giving me some good prices for an 8 person apartment and a 2 person one nearby so its looking good.

As for parking I dont think any of us are going to have a car- do you recommend hiring one? Ive heard the free ski buses in Chamonix aren't the best but how bad are they for getting from Chamonix to Le Tour or Grand Montets- is it just that they are really packed or is it that they dont come along very often? We've a few beginners in the group ( well theyve had one weeks boarding in Slovakia- havent quite got the hang of it 100% yet ) so I guess the Flegere/Brevant areas will be good for them- there seems to be a few easy blue runs there with small vertical decents and they could walk from Chamonix Sud to the Planpraz bubble lift so its not too bad . But the rest of us will probably want to concentrate on the steeper stuff in Grand Montets and Le Tour- would you say a car is essential for getting there? Or are the buses bearable with a dose of patience?

Bearing in mind we will be there from Feb 21st- possibly one of the busiest weeks of the season....

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that the good thing about snostation is that many of their apartments have parking, so it will come in handy for getting to Grand Montets.

I think the center of town apartment has three doubles...

Thanks for the SnoStation tip Kuan, their website looks good, I'll get some prices from them for sure.

Chip Board- theres 10 of us which is the reason we wanted to book early to ensure we are all staying in the same place. Also theres 2 couples who want double rooms and the Vagabond only has 3 doubles in total in the house so we wanted to make sure the loved up ones get what they want ! Its just a pity they're not taking bookings for next winter till Sept or we would book right away to hold the rooms. We cant wait till Sept in case we ring up and then they can't accomodate all 10 of us.......

if anyone else has any tips on cheap places to stay in Chamonix during Feburary then let it fly here

I booked Xmas week at the Vag about a month before going last season so I wouldn't worry too much about booking early there..

Hiya, we're trying to book our 2009 holiday. We have to go Feb 21 as one of the group is a school teacher and its her half term. Anyway we're on a budget so found the Vagabond and at £25 a night for half board it seemed ideal. Only thing was when we rang up to book they said they aren't taking bookings for Winter till September.....

We just want to get accommodation booked soon as its the busiest time of year and we dont want to be left way down in Les Houches or the back of beyonds.

Ive stayed in the YHA in Chamonix last summer and although its cheap its not the best and its a 25 minute walk into town.

Does anyone know any chalets or self catering along the lines of the Vagabond that cater to those on a budget ?
